Klasse und Klassismus. Eine kritische Bestandsaufnahme
So far, the concept of classism has not found much resonance in the German Scientific Community. Nevertheless, its relevance rises. The article explains and criticizes the previous conceptions of classism and tries to give some theoretical impulse for a new concept of classism which could reveal how capitalist structures produce class discrimination within the working class
Krise und Geschlecht: Überlegungen zu einem feministisch-materialistischen Krisenverständnis
The article works through feminist notions of crisis in discussions about the crisis of care economy and the crisis of masculinity on the one hand, and concepts of crisis within materialist discussions on the other. Trying to elaborate a feminist-materialist understanding of crisis, the article contributes to a better understanding of the interdependence of crisis and gender
Strahlende Hinterlassenschaften aus Produktion und Konsumtion: Zur Politischen Ökonomie des Atommülls
In no country in which nuclear energy is produced there has been elaborated satisfying solutions for nuclear waste. Since the beginning of this form of energy production, the related immense problems have been downplayed and banalised. The policy of the German governments in the last decades corresponds to this overall picture, and only the last years have seen new initiatives on the national and the EU level, reflecting the growing awareness of this extremely „wicked problem“. Nevertheless, the nuclear industry has until now been successful in refusing its responsibility and externalizing potential risks and costs. Without sufficient public pressure the entanglement between this industry and official bodies will continue and further hinder any constructive solution
Arbeitsregulation in der ambulanten Pflege Handlungsfelder kollektiver Interessenvertretung
Working conditions in out-patient care are considered precarious. While more and more nurses are employed in care at home, no appreciable collective representation of interests seems to be emerging that can respond to the specific regulatory requirements in terms of employees. Opportunities for trade union activities sectors are presented which were previously considered strongly subjectivized through social orientation and employment without boundaries and so less promising fields of collective regulated working conditions
Globaler Schrott: Raumproduktionen, Destruktionsketten und die sozioökonomischen Strukturen der pakistanischen Schiffsabwrack-Industrie
Global Scrap: Global destruction networks, the production of space and socio-economic structures of the Pakistani ship breaking industry. Every year, hundreds of discarded vessels are broken up at South Asian ship breaking yards, including Chittagong in Bangladesh, Alang in India and Gadani in Pakistan. These (waste) flows of end-of-life vessels are being sent from the global north, notably the European Union, to the global south (Indian Subcontinent). This contribution follows the movement of value through global destruction networks by focusing on the Pakistani ship breaking industry at Gadani Beach and linking its significance for the local and national economy to both global processes as well as to labour conditions and environmental problem
Die realökonomischen Ursachen der Rezession
Mainstream economists and macroeconomic research institutes are interpreting the economic crisis of 2008 mainly as a result of turbulances in the financial sphere of the economy. US National Accounts data indicate that Every recession in the USA from 1950 till 2010 – including the recession of 2008 – was preceded by a similar pattern in the development of the real economy. In addition the paper argues that the phenomenon of financialisation and the neoliberal regime of accumulation has its ultimate reasons in the development of the real economy
Für eine Feministische Politische Ökologie des Klimawandels: Überlegungen zu einer erweiterten Analyseperspektive auf Geschlecht und Anpassung
Social science climate research falls significantly short of the reflective power of feminist thought when it comes to the role of gender and its intersection with other categories of social difference and hierarchy in adaptation to climate change. This article seeks to narrow this gap by broadening the perspectives for an analysis of gender and adaptation to climate change from an intersectional and Political Ecology perspective. It argues for an multi-level framework that considers and relates three analytical levels: the political economic mechanisms of hierarchization, which shape the individual and collective scope of action through their material gender-, and class- or age specific effects, the effects of hegemonic representations and discourses, and the subject level in order to capture the identity political dynamics that contribute to unequal options for climate adaptation among subjects. It provides empirical illustrations from a case study in Mexico/Chiapas
Krise und Protest in den Städten: Occupy machte sich 2011 auf den Weg um die halbe Welt
Researcher interested in social movements as well as political commentators agree that we have been witnessing a historically-specific cycle of global mobilizations since 2011. However, it seems much less clear what exactly political movements and uprising such as the Arab Spring, the European protests against austerity policies, and the US-Occupy movement have in common. This article takes the massive presence of movements in public spaces as a point of departure, and analyzes the global cycle of protests through an urban lense. Arguing that the process of neo-liberalization, the austerity measures aiming at the management of the current crisis, and people’s responses on the streets’ are strongly articulated through urban space, the article discusses similarities and differences between movements in various regional contexts
Gewerkschaftliche Erneuerung in der Eurokrise: Neue Organisationsformen der spanischen Gewerkschaften während des Protestzyklus ab 2011
The Eurozone crisis has deepened the structural and organisational weaknesses of the Spanish trade union movement. At the same time, unions were challenged by new social movements in a cycle of protests following the indignados of 15M. In consequence, a hesitant strategic reorientation and regeneration of the trade unions took place as they struggled to include social forms applied by the new movements such as grassroots democracy and civil disobedience into their strategic repertoire
Herrschaft, Arbeitsteilung, Ungleichheit: Das Beispiel der Sorgearbeit und des Sorgeregimes im Gegenwartskapitalismus
Concerning contemporary capitalism a „return of class“ is diagnosed. The paper argues that this is not sufficient to analyze and describe the societal development. Further social differentiations and inequalities have to be recognized to be effects as well as prepositions of finance capitalism. This is analyzed and exemplified in the case of care work by discussing different care regimes in the context of economic and social change and especially austerity. The „crisis of care“ has to be seen as a result of different, but amalgamated logics and relations of dominance combined with different models of the welfare state. The examination shows how the gendered and ethnic division of labor is shaping societal change
