Get PDFThe German government and especially Wolfgang Schaeuble were heavily criticized for the harsh policy against Greece not only because of damaging Greece but also because of damaging German reputation. The article argues that they just follow German interests: Germany is economically and politically the big winner of the crisis. The German export economy is fueled by the weak Euro and the German state saves since 2010 more than 100 Billion by extremely low interest rates for German bonds. The Eurozone is formed according to the German austerity model and will be used by German capital and export-oriented factions of the European capital as a strong basis in global competition. The conflict with Greece shows that any economically weak member of the Euro-zone has no chance against the coalition between Germany and the ECB, they have to submit. Who wants to enter Euro-zone should have this in mind

Get PDFAfter the Great Recession and unconventional monetary policy, which saved in many countries the financial system, the debate about money and the financial system became popular again. The article analyzes the development of the domestic and global financial systems during the last debates as well as monetary policy and reform policies during and after the Great Recession. It also discusses critical fundamental alternatives for example the proposal to reintroduce a commodity money system or private money like Bitcoins. These debates sometimes mix up the different functions and forms of money. Several contributions based on a Marxian and Keynesian approach clarify functions and forms of money including the possibilities and limitations to stabilize a capitalist economy with monetary policy and reforms of the financial system

Despite the wide use of unconventional monetary measures economic activity has not improved, esp. in the EU and signs of a worldwide recession are lurking. While the economic stimulus by monetary policy has been flawed by counteracting tendencies in the real economy (low profitability, private indebtedness) the measures taken had negative distributive consequences and might lead to an increase in inequality. Together with austerity measures by the state and its role as an insurance provider for capital anti-crisis policies have strengthened the position of wealthy income classes at the expense of low income classes
Nach dem Juni-Aufstand: Die diskursiven Veränderungen der Frauenpolitik in der Türkei im Kontext der sozialen Widerstandsformen um den Gezi-Park
Get PDFThe article focuses on the participation of women and the feminist critique of the AKP government. The aim is to provide a differentiated analysis of Gezi protests with a view of the backgrounds and the discursive developments up to the time of the outbreak of the protests and thereby contributing to the understanding of this social movement. The June uprising in Turkey can be regarded as an outcry against a paradigm shift that has established itself over the last 12 years due to the reconstruction of the legislation and the reorganization of the state apparatus. To closer examine the position of women, the article analyze the gender relations in Turkey and the paradigm shift represented in women’s policy. Thus the relationship between the nation and the nuclear family concept as a discursive place where power structures are reproduced will be highlighted. Furthermore, seven interviews with women were analyzed to discover which aspects of the women’s policy of the AKP the protagonists criticize. These aspects were contrasted with the discursive developments in women’s policy which enabled the reconstruction of reasons for the outbreak of the protests in June 2013

Get PDFThe article discusses the ways in which bio-capitalism has been analyzed and criticized during the last decade. In contrast to analyses that reduce bio-capitalism to the emergence of bio-tech-industries and the respective transformations of capitalist accumulation, the author argues for an understanding of bio-capitalism as specific mode of bio-politics that does not only involve new strategies of accumulation but also transformations of subjectivities and modes of livings. In particular, the article explores three critical perspectives – bioethics, the critique of marketization, and attempts to rethink political economy – and asks how they contribute to a critical understanding of bio-capitalist modes of the production, circulation and consumption of body materials

Get PDFSince the huge popular movements in Europe of 2011-2013 have lost momentum, organizing strategies have shifted to the neighborhood level, and grassroots activism has become less visible. At the same time, the hope for political change seems to focus more and more on party politics and the electoral arena. Several authors insist that left-wing parties provide a form of condensation of oppositional forces and that austerity can be defeated through the election of anti-austerity governments. This article takes a closer look at Greece and Spain, how electoral options developed, what strategies they used, and if they can deliver what they originally promised. To what extent do the electoral initiatives and parties in Greece and Spain offer a new approach? Are they the solution for the unsolved problem of uniting the different social struggles in one alternative project? The article also discusses some strategic options of participation in electoral politics in order to achieve social transformation

Get PDFIn recent years a debate about the possibilities of left wing populism in Germany occurred. Based on own empirical findings about how workers deal with different situations of precarious work this contribution argues, that such a populist project is not only possible but necessary. It is a popular diagnosis among scholars of industrial relations, that the precarisation of work is limiting the possibilities for solidarity and collective action among workers. But as empirical data shows also new perceptions of injustice are arising, which could be used as a starting point for union politics. In the following two different frames of interpretation are reconstructed, which workers apply in order to handle their social situation. Although not without contradictions each entails potentials for a progressive left wing populism. In order to engage with these potentials, it is argued, activists of an antagonistic left should start building a political project, whose possible populist elements are outlined in the conclusions
