Social Labour and Social Democracy: The Everyday Political Discourse on »System Relevance« as a Dispute About a Socio-Ecological Politics of Work
Full text linkIch diskutiere alltagspolitische Interventionen von Arbeiter*innen zu ihrer »Systemrelevanz« in demokratietheoretischer Perspektive. Die These lautet, dass ein fundamentaler Zusammenhang von sozialer Demokratie und gesellschaftlichem Charakter von (Lohn-)Arbeit wirksam ist, der dringend mehr Beachtung benötigt. Nach einer empirischen Illustration argumentiere ich entlang von drei theoretischen Schneisen: mit Blick auf einen gesellschaftlichen Begriff von Lohnarbeit und Arbeiter*innen, zum Verhältnis von Arbeit und Demokratie und zur Aktualisierung und Erweiterung des gesellschaftlichen Arbeitsbegriffs als sozialökologisch fürsorgliche Praxis. Abschließend wird die diskurspolitische Verwandlung von Arbeiter*innen in »Helden« als Angriff auf soziale Demokratie skizziert.I discuss the everyday political interventions of workers in the debate on »system relevance« in terms of democratic theory. The thesis is that a fundamental connection between social democracy and the social character of (wage) work, which urgently needs more attention. After an empirical illustration, I argue along three theoretical tracks: on the societal concept of wage labor and workers, on the relation between labor and democracy, and on the actualization and extension of the social concept of labor as a socioecological caring practice. Finally, the discourse-political transformation of workers into »heroes« as an attack on social democracy is outlined
A Bit of Feminism in Times of War? Paradoxes of Feminist Foreign Policy
Full text linkIm Zusammenhang des Krieges gegen die Ukraine wird feministische Außenpolitik auch in Deutschland zum Thema. Allerdings vernachlässigt die aktuelle Diskussion grundlegende feministische Kritik an der patriarchalen Grundierung internationaler Politik und der maskulinistischen Fundierung von Militarismus und Kriegsgewalt. Feministische Außenpolitik sollte insbesondere auf die Dichotomisierungen und Polarisierungen reagieren, über die Kriegsbereitschaft hergestellt wird und die zugleich ein Grundmuster anti-emanzipatorischer Entwicklungen aller Art bilden. Ansonsten wird es ihr kaum gelingen, auf die drängenden Fragen des (Welt-)Friedens angemessene Antworten zu finden.In the context of the war against Ukraine, feminist foreign policy has become an issue in Germany. However, the current discussion tends to neglect feminist criticism of the patriarchal foundation of international politics and the masculinist foundation of militarism and violence of war. In particular, feminist foreign policy should react to the dichotomies and processes of polarizations that strengthen the will to war and inform the basic patterns of anti-emancipatory developments of all kinds. Otherwise, feminist foreign policy will hardly succeed in providing adequate answers to the urgent questions of peace

No full textDer Begriff »Staatskapitalismus« erlebt seit dem Ausbruch der globalen Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise 2007 eine Renaissance. Nachdem der Bedeutungsgewinn der chinesischen Ökonomie in den globalen Finanzbeziehungen zu Sonderberichten zum Thema Staatskapitalismus im Economist (20.8.2008; 21.-27.1.2012) und in der Financial Times (24.1.2008) geführt hat, wird der Begriff heute sowohl in liberalen Leitmedien als auch in den kritischen Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften breit rezipiert. Die zentrale Frage lautet: Stehen wir angesichts einer aktuell stärker sichtbaren Rolle des Staates im globalen Kapitalismus vor einer neuen Phase »staatskapitalistischer« Entwicklung? Mit dem Schwerpunktthema »StaatsKapitalismus« wollen wir sowohl den Begriff theoretisch-konzeptuell weiterentwickeln als auch mit empirischen Analysen von staatskapitalistischen Erscheinungsformen in unterschiedlichen Weltregionen der derzeit offenen Bestimmung des Staatskapitalismus-Begriffs entgegenarbeiten.The term »state capitalism« has experienced a renaissance since the outbreak of the global financial and economic crisis in 2007. After the rise in importance of the Chinese economy in global financial relations led to special reports on the topic of state capitalism in the Economist (20.8.2008; 21.-27.1.2012) and the Financial Times (24.1.2008), the term is now widely received both in liberal leading media and in the critical economic and social sciences. The central question is: In view of the currently more visible role of the state in global capitalism, are we facing a new phase of »state capitalist« development? With the focus on »State Capitalism«, we want to further develop the concept theoretically and conceptually as well as counteract the currently open definition of the concept of state capitalism with empirical analyses of state capitalist manifestations in different regions of the world

November verstarb Bodo Zeuner im Alter von 79 Jahren.Bodo Zeuner was closely associated with PROKLA for 50 years as an author and member of the friends’ association, and worked in the editorial collective trade unions in the 1970s. On November 30, Bodo Zeuner died at the age of 79
Where to Look for the State: Antonio Gramsci’s Theory of Hegemony and Queer Feminist State Theory
Full text linkDer Beitrag zeigt, dass es für die Staatstheorie produktiv ist, Antonio Gramscis Hegemonietheorie queer-feministisch entlang von drei Dimensionen weiterzudenken: Erstens, um die Stabilität des vergeschlechtlichten, heteronormativen Charakters des Staates zu begreifen; zweitens, um das Verhältnis von Staat und vergeschlechtlichten Subjekten zu erfassen; und drittens, um Geschlecht und Heteronormativität als staatliche Ressourcen in Krisen zu theorisieren. Ziel ist darzulegen, dass verkörperte, alltägliche Formen der Normalisierung und Naturalisierung von Geschlechterverhältnissen und sexuellen Lebensweisen die »robuste Struktur« des Staates bilden.The article draws attention to the productivity of a queer-feminist rethinking of Antonio Gramsci’s theory of hegemony for state theory along three dimensions: First, in order to understand how the gendered architecture of the state is an effect of practices in civil society and of hegemony; second, to conceptualize the relationship between the state and gendered subject constitution; third, to theorize gender and heteronormativity as resources of the state in social crises. The overall aim of the text is to reveal that embodied, everyday forms of normalization and naturalization of gender and sexual relations form the »robust structure« of the state
Beyond Market Liberalism? European Industrial and Infrastructure Policy Facing New Global Rivalries
Full text linkDie Aufwertung von Industrie- und Infrastrukturpolitik in der EU verdichtet sich aktuell zu einer »staatsinterventionistischen Wende«. Es kommt zur Mobilisierung zusätzlicher gemeinschaftlicher Instrumente und finanzieller Ressourcen und zum Bruch mit einigen Aspekten des marktliberalen Paradigmas, das die europäische Integration lange Zeit prägte. Wir zeigen, mit welchen polit-ökonomischen Konzeptionen sich diese Wende analysieren lässt, und stellen die These auf, dass vor allem geoökonomische Erwägungen die industrie- und infrastrukturpolitische Neuausrichtung vorantreiben und andere Gestaltungslogiken überlagern.The current upgrading of industrial and infrastructure policy in the EU is indicating a »state interventionist turn«. It is characterised by the creation of additional political instruments and the mobilization of financial resources, breaking with some aspects of the market-liberal paradigm that has shaped European integration for a long time. We explain which political-economic concepts can be used to analyse this turn. We argue that it is primarily geoeconomic considerations that are driving the industrial and infrastructure policy reorientation, outweighing other logics

Ihre Funktion hat sich historisch geändert. Zahlreiche Widersprüche und Konflikte haben in der Vergangenheit ihre Politik bestimmt. Mit Blick auf eine neue Konjunktur der kapitalistischen Entwicklung muss sie ihre programmatischen Konzepte überdenken und sich personell anders aufstellen. Die Krise, in der Die LINKE als parlamentarische Partei steht, ist jedoch eine Herausforderung und verlangt strategische Antworten.The German party THE LEFT is the unlikely result of the double protest against the nature of German reunification and the neoliberal policies of the Red-Green government between 1998 and 2005. Its function has changed historically. Numerous contradictions and conflicts have determined its policies in the past. In view of a new conjuncture of capitalist development, it must rethink its programmatic concepts and change its personnel. However, the crisis in which THE LEFT finds itself as a parliamentary party is a challenge and demands strategic answers
High-Risk Area of Value Chains: Trade Union Countervailing Power in Company Networks in the Face of Corona

Am Beispiel der globalen Wertschöpfungsnetzwerke der deutschen Automobil- und Zulieferindustrie und speziell ihrer Produktionsstandorte in Mexiko und Südafrika wird zwei Fragen nachgegangen: Vor welchen besonderen Herausforderungen steht die transnationale Gewerkschaftsarbeit bei der Überwindung der Coronakrise, und wie kann die Überprüfung von globalen Arbeits- und Sozialstandards an internationalen Produktionsstandorten deutscher Unternehmen im Ausland gelingen?The article discusses the consequences of the Corona pandemic on compliance with global labour and social standards in transnational supply chains. Using the example of the global value-added networks of the German automobile and supplier industry and their production sites in Mexico and South Africa, two questions will be explored: What particular challenges does transnational trade union work face in overcoming the Corona crisis, and how can the verification of global labour and social standards succeed at international production sites of German companies abroad

Demirovic hat durch seine Poulantzas-Rezeption wesentlich zur Rekonstruktion einer materialistischen Staatstheorie beigetragen. Neben der theoretischen Orientierung hat er sich für eine linkssozialistische Parteipolitik eingesetzt. Dabei hält er an der sozialistischen Vision einer freien und humanen Gesellschaft jenseits des Kapitalismus fest.The article pays tribute to Alex Demirovic\u27s commitment to critical theory, materialist state theory and socialist utopia. Alex Demirovic has contributed significantly to the reconstruction of a materialist theory of the state through his reception of Poulantzas. In addition to theoretical orientation, he has advocated a left socialist party policy. In doing so, he adheres to the socialist vision of a free and humane society beyond capitalism
