    As libraries grapple with declining budgets, shifting priorities, high rates of turnover, vacancies, the “new normal,” and the persistent push to “do more with less,” an increasing number of library workers have found that their roles have deviated from their original job descriptions, sometimes drastically. In many cases, these roles were loosely or confusingly defined and have called upon individuals to perform duties for which they have limited to no experience, training, or guidance. This paper explores the challenges of adjusting to such unanticipated changes and, through exploration of the author’s own experiences, begins a discussion of strategies and techniques that may be helpful to those navigating similar circumstances.https://doi.org/10.33011/newlibs/19/

    Investigating combination of photodynamic therapy and AXL inhibition for improved treatment outcomes of glioblastoma

    Gemstone Team MetaBioGlioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is notorious for its aggressive behavior, brain invasion, and poor prognosis, with a median survival of less than 18 months. Limited treatment options contribute to GBM’s status as one of the deadliest cancers. The intricate tumor composition and invasion of vital brain areas render it resistant to standard therapies, necessitating novel approaches to extend post-diagnosis survival. Intraoperative photodynamic therapy (PDT) has emerged as a promising technique, involving the administration of a photosensitizer before surgery and red light application afterward to target residual tumor cells. Recently, an excipient-free nanoparticle formulation of verteporfin (NanoVP) photosensitizer was developed for PDT of GBM, demonstrating superior efficacy in reducing tumor burden and extending animal survival compared to existing photosensitizers. We explored the combined effects of NanoVP-PDT and clinically promising AXL inhibitors on GBM cells. Phospho-AXL, which is highly expressed in GBM tumors and correlates with shorter overall patient survival, represents a compelling therapeutic target for small-molecule inhibition.     Lava River Cave IMU (Moasure) Traverse

    Lava River Cave near Flagstaff, Northern Arizona, is a lava tube approximately 1.25 km long and 15 m wide. The cave has been previously mapped by manual sketching and, recently, mobile light detection and ranging (LiDAR; King et al., 2023). However, large discrepancies remain in the absolute positioning of the cave passage, likely owing to poor GPS reception in the pine forest. To address this inconsistency, we performed a 350 m traverse of the cave passage starting at the cave entrance and ending at the pillar where the tube bifurcates and reconnects, while tracking the movement using a Moasure 2 PRO, a motion-based measuring tool (inertial measurement unit). The resulting 3D spatial dataset in Cartesian coordinates was then georeferenced using a straight path north of the cave and the nearby parking lot as base stations

    Librarians’ Contribution to Sense of Belonging for Undergraduate Honors Students

    Extensive interdisciplinary research has confirmed that feeling a sense of belonging on their college campus is a strong indicator of engagement, persistence, and retention for undergraduate students. A prominent method to increase sense of belonging is through high-impact practices, active learning practices that promote deep learning, such as participation in living-learning communities, student-led research, internships, and writing-intensive seminars (Kuh, 2008). Although the literature has discussed how academic libraries as institutions have helped contribute to a sense of belonging on campus for undergraduate students and how academic libraries support high-impact practices, there is little literature focused on the librarian as an individual and their contributions. This gap in the literature interested the presenters, who became curious in examining how librarians as individuals contributed to a sense of belonging for undergraduate students participating in high-impact practices. The UMD Libraries and Gemstone Honors Program partnership emerged as a natural space to examine this idea. The Gemstone Honors Program is an example of a high-impact practice with its status as a living-learning community focused on student-led undergraduate research. The Gemstone Honors Program has published about their experiences as a high-impact practice and how Gemstone contributes to a sense of belonging for their students (Bowers, et al, 2020). As part of the partnership, UMD Librarians serve as librarian mentors for Gemstone teams, providing teams with individualized support as teams navigate the research and scholarly dissemination process. Using 10 years of student-submitted responses from the University Libraries Award for Outstanding Gemstone Team applications, the presenters have found positive evidence to indicate that librarians as individuals are contributing to a sense of belonging for undergraduate students. This presentation will cover information about high-impact practices and their contributions to sense of belonging, the presenters’ exploratory study and findings, and future research in this area

    The Relationship Between Gut Motility and the Phases of the Menstrual Cycle

    Gemstone Team BELIFemale reproductive hormones fluctuate significantly throughout the menstrual cycle, influencing gastrointestinal motility and function. These changes in gut motility contribute to gastrointestinal symptoms such as flatulence, diarrhea, and constipation. When transit time is faster, fewer carbohydrates are absorbed in the small intestine, leading to increased microbial fermentation and gas production in the large intestine. Given the established effects of reproductive hormones on gut motility, we hypothesized that we would detect increased gut microbial gas production during menstruation, when estradiol and progesterone are lowest and transit time is fastest. However, due to a lack of tools to measure gut microbial gas production longitudinally, the literature lacks a formal test of this hypothesis. Therefore, we used a novel tool, the Smart Underwear device, to measure gut microbial gas production as a proxy for intestinal transit time. Participants wore the device for a total of nine days over the course of one menstrual cycle. On device-wearing days, participants logged the meals they consumed. Additionally, participants used Luteinizing Hormone test strips in the middle of their cycle, approximately on day 14, to confirm ovulation timing and more precisely map menstrual cycle phases. We extracted and analyzed the data from our returned Smart Underwear devices to measure gut microbial gas production as an indicator of intestinal transit time at different phases of the menstrual cycle, providing the first longitudinal measurements of gut microbial gas production across the menstrual cycle. Initial findings suggest that microbiome activity varies significantly across phases, with heightened activity during ovulation. Our analysis revealed that higher concentrations of flatulence peaks occurred during the ovulation phase

    A Brief History of STEM Libraries at UMD
