    Intersections: Revisiting Baltimore County's Rosenwald Schools

    The historic architecture and intangible heritage of many Rosenwald Schools in historically African American communities, are at risk of disappearing due to several factors, including demolition by neglect, new-development gentrification, and community displacement. It is important to preserve and share the history, architecture, and culture of these communities for future generations. These communities have been historically underrepresented, and while change in a community over time is expected, the path forward must include both the preservation of its heritage and addressing the needs of the present community to best serve those who live there. Potential built environment solutions to address this issue include the adaptive reuse of or an addition to an extant Rosenwald School building and its surrounding site to create spaces for the conveyance and celebration of the history and culture of these communities, using the historic Halethorpe Colored School as a model

    Development of Firebrand Optical Characterization Device for Deployment on UAVs

    Gemstone Team SupaHotWildfires increasingly threaten ecosystems and communities, driven by climate change and expanding wildland-urban interfaces. A key but poorly understood factor in wildfire spread is firebrand transport—embers carried by wind that can ignite spot fires far from the main blaze. This project developed a stereo vision camera system for potential deployment on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to track firebrand release and movement. Using synchronized, high-resolution cameras, the system captures 3D trajectories, allowing for estimation of firebrand velocity, lifespan, and dispersal. Unlike ground-based systems, a UAV-integrated approach enables rapid, flexible, and safer data collection in active fire zones. The future insights gained from this technology can support improved fire spread models and defensible space guidelines, contributing to more effective wildfire management

    All experimental transmission data (S_21) in Revealing isotropic abundant low-energy excitations in UTe2 through complex microwave surface impedance was collected using a Keysight vector network analyzer (VNA). The transmission parameter was collected for several modes and temperatures. The raw S_21 data was processed into resonant frequency and quality factor using a Lorentzian fit to S_21 vs frequency for each mode and temperature.This is the dataset used to perform all the analysis and create all the figures of the paper: Revealing isotropic abundant low-energy excitations in UTe2 through complex microwave surface impedance.The work of AC-J and SMA was supported by NSF-DMR/2004386, and ARO/FSDL under grant W911NF-24-1-0153.     The Role of Parental Responsibility in Relation to the Familial Link of Anxiety

    Anxiety has a strong familial link in which parent anxiety increases the risk for child anxiety. Behavioral inhibition (BI) is also a risk factor for the development of anxiety, and parent factors (i.e., overprotection, overcontrol) exacerbate this risk. Studies examining the link between parent and child anxiety have mainly focused on genetics and childrearing styles. Few studies have explored the role of coparenting, and none have specifically studied parental responsibility, which refers to parents’ degree of involvement in caregiving activities. Limited studies have also incorporated both parents’ anxiety and child anxiety within the same model to capture a comprehensive family approach. This study utilized hierarchical regression to investigate the association between parent and child anxiety severity and how parental responsibility may play a role in the association. Post-hoc analyses were also conducted to further explore the relationships discovered between main variables (parent anxiety severity, child anxiety severity, parental responsibility). This cross-sectional secondary data analysis utilized baseline data from a randomized controlled trial comparing two treatments for young children high in BI, the Turtle Program and Cool Little Kids. The full sample consisted of 151 children and their primary parents and coparents. The final study sample consisted of 81 families with data on parental responsibility. Coparent anxiety was directly linked with child anxiety, whereas primary parent anxiety was not, suggesting the importance of considering both parents’ anxiety when examining the association between parent and child anxiety. Greater involvement in caregiving activities by both parents was also associated with lower child anxiety severity, suggesting that having more balance between parents in the amount of time they spend in caregiving activities may be an important factor for child anxiety severity. Based on the study, the role of coparent anxiety and balance in parental responsibility may be important to consider when assessing and treating families with children elevated in BI. Future studies should consider incorporating additional family, coparenting, and parenting factors to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how balance in parental responsibility may play a role in the link between parent and child anxiety.This research was supported by NIMH Grant #: 5R01MH103253-02 (Multiple PIs: Chronis-Tuscano and Rubin)

    Associations between social responsiveness and brain structure in children

    Early childhood is critical for assessing socioemotional development, especially to identify risk of a disorder developing. Research exists showing relations between brain development and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Damage to the amygdala can result in impaired response and perception of social cues (1). Additional findings show larger amygdala and hippocampal volumes (2) and cortical thinning (3) in individuals with ASD. Behavioral studies have shown that social responsiveness as a key indicator of risk (4). However, children with differences in social behavior without ASD are understudied. This project will investigate relations between neurological variations and differences in social responsiveness in 4- to 8-year-old typically developing children. We will explore relations between amygdala volume, hippocampal volume, and cortical thickness of frontal, parietal and occipital lobes and Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) scores (3). Our study includes approximately 200 children (ages 4-8 years), with neuroimaging and questionnaire data. We measured social responsiveness using the SRS, a parent-report questionnaire (4). We measured amygdala and hippocampal volumes and cortical thickness from structural brain scans using Freesurfer. Correlations between measures will be conducted using R. We hypothesize that lower levels of social responsiveness will be associated with larger amygdala and right hippocampal volumes and decreased cortical thickness. Conducting this research will expand brain research in relation to socioemotional development in all children.     Weeding to Grow: Deaccessioning to Make Space for a Growing Collection

    As part of my field study at UMD's Art Library, I have been working on a long-term project to address a crisis of lack of space. The Art Library has a vast physical collection that has outgrown the available space in our stacks. In order to address this, I have worked with the Art and Architecture Librarian, Cindy Frank, to create a plan to weed the collection in order to make space for titles that reflect more diverse topics in Art and Art History. My poster will include our findings, methods, and recommendations for physical collections that can contribute to the scholarly conversation around weeding, deaccessioning, and collections development

    Defensores De La Cuenca Interactive Web App

    Final project for URSP688M: Recent Developments in Urban Studies; Intermediate Geographic Information Systems (Spring 2025). University of Maryland, College ParkThis project partners with Defensores de la Cuenca, a Latino-led nonprofit, to create an interactive web mapping application that supports environmental stewardship in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Using ArcGIS technology, the platform visualizes client data, tree planting requests, and equity zones across the OMV region.     Evaluating the Impact of Socioeconomic Factors on Timing and Quality of Autism Diagnosis in Maryland

    Previous research has established that early diagnosis and intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) significantly improve the effectiveness of interventions. However, obtaining a diagnosis can be challenging for some families. This study aims to explore whether socioeconomic status (SES) and related factors contribute to delays in receiving an ASD diagnosis, and if so, how. A mixed-methods approach is used, combining surveys and interviews with a subset of participants. The goal is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the obstacles parents and caregivers in Maryland face when seeking an ASD diagnosis for their child. The study begins with an initial survey and interviewees are randomly selected from participants who express interest in further involvement. As the survey is currently ongoing, preliminary results are not yet available. If specific obstacles are identified, future research can validate these findings and help inform strategies to reduce barriers, making the diagnostic process more accessible for families.Launch UM

    Americans on Presidential Authority

    Voice Of the People (VOP) is a nonpartisan organization working to re-anchor our democracy in its founding principles by giving ‘We the People’ a greater and more effective voice in government. VOP champions innovative methods and technology – notably online public consultations – that enable the American people to play a role in the policymaking process and provide policymakers with a more accurate understanding of the views of their constituents. The Program for Public Consultation conducts policymaking simulations, which are an online process that puts citizens in the shoes of elected officials by simulating the process they go through in making policy decisions. Each simulation introduces a broader policy topic and then presents a series of modules that address a specific policy option that is currently under consideration in the current discourse. For each module, respondents: receive a short briefing on a policy issue and the option or options for addressing it; evaluate arguments for and against the policy options; and finally, make their recommendation for what their elected officials should do.These are some of the findings of a new in-depth survey by the University of Maryland’s Program for Public Consultation (PPC), fielded March 4-7, 2025 with a representative sample of 1,249 adults nationwide. “Though Americans have many frustrations with the federal government, the large majority of Americans do not seem to see giving Presidents more power as the answer,” commented Steven Kull, Director of PPC. Respondents evaluated strongly stated arguments for and against expanding Presidential authority, over independent agencies and federal spending. The arguments against did better, especially those that focused on how centralizing more power in the Presidency risks corruption and politicization of essential government functions, and undermines the Constitution’s separation of powers. Large bipartisan majorities found those arguments convincing. The arguments in favor of expanding Presidential authority – that doing so would better allow Presidents to fulfill their agenda, which the people voted for, and take power away from unaccountable – were found convincing by smaller and less bipartisan majorities.https://publicconsultation.org/united-states/presidential-authority
