    Cationic Antiseptics as Larvicides for Aedes aegypti

    By spreading a number ofviruses, mosquitoes are responsible for the death of humans more than any other creature in the world. They have been getting more resistant to insecticidesso we were experimenting with different cationic antiseptic QAC’s (Quaternary Ammonium Compounds) to use instead of insecticides. In the first life stages of the mosquito, larvae, mainly feed on bacteria and aquatic debris. The Antiseptic QAC kills the bacteriaand it works by disabling the bacteria in the larval water. Hence, killing the larvae by starvation. We were also able to change the concentrations of QAC and we were able to determine the smallest concentration needed to kill the larvae and how the concentration dwindles over time

    Identifying the presence of OCT and OCTN in Aedes aegypti

    The Aedes aegypti mosquito is known as one of the most dangerous mosquitoes due to its ability to spread Dengue, which puts more than 3.9 billion people in danger. Insecticides remain the primary tool to prevent disease spread by A. aegypti, but insecticide resistance is growing therefore new methods are needed. One possible target is the mosquito’s pathway for removing foreign toxins. Our study aims to identify the presence of cation xenobiotic transporters such as the OCTN protein AAEL012443 and OCT AAEL009206. The chosen inhibitors disarrayed the influx/efflux and their built-up toxicity impact was monitored by differentiating the type and concentrations of inhibitors. After multiple trials of injecting mosquitoes with various inhibitors, we found that mosquitoes injected with 10mM OCTN and OCT inhibitors exhibited a higher mortality than the mosquitoes with 1mM. This result gave us confidence that OCT and OCTN proteins exist in mosquitoes and further research is suggested to extend our understanding

    100 Layers of Ink 千层墨 (painting series)

    Jie-Chang Yang worked on the 100 Layers of Ink series painting from 1989 to 1999. He used traditional Chinese Rice paper as a canvas and applied ink to it. After it dries, he applies another layer of ink over the previous layers and repeats the procedure until it is saturated. Because the Xuan paper became fragile and flimsy after being painting many times, he used silk, paper mounting, typical of traditional ink paintings and linen to stabilize the work.     Impacts of exogenous salicylic acid on Sorghum phyllosphere microbiome diversity and colony abundance

    Salinity in the soil has increased in many areas of the world due to anthropogenic influence and global warming. Salicylic acid (SA) is being explored as a way to counteract the negative effects of salinity by upregulating plant growth and photosynthetic rate. SA is a plant metabolite released naturally as an immune response against pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, exogenous SA application may in fact cause microbial selection that is ultimately harmful to the plant by reducing species diversity. In this study, we examined how the number of culturable colonies changed under different concentrations of SA treatment. Further, we monitored relative plant health via plant growth and an assay for photosynthetic rate. As SA concentration increased, the total number of observable colonies increased dramatically while plant health deteriorated. Further, the total number of morphologies seemed to converge to one indicating a lower level of species diversity in the phyllosphere of the plant. These data suggest that microbial selection is occurring in the presence of SA which could lead to disastrous consequences for the plant in extreme weather events
