Design of an Experimental Upgrade for Improved Electric Field Control in Pursuit of Optical Tweezers
No full textThis summer, I worked to design a set of machinable electrodes and lens holders that would fit into our experiment’s existing vacuum chamber. I used Onshape CAD software to design to-scale parts, and I used Ansys to simulate different electrode configurations and test the viability of various design decisions. With its eventual implementation, the part that I have designed will allow us to apply voltages to electrodes near trapped atoms, giving us the ability to control the electric field at the center of our vacuum chamber for both corrective and experimental purposes
Queer Community Online: Minority Stress and Mental Health
No full textSocial media use among LGBTQ+ individuals plays an important role in identity development. We explored social media usage with multiple targeted measures in the present study. Two-hundred ninety-nine queer individuals filled out a survey related to social media use, minority stress, and mental health. In multiple regression analyses, we found that commitment to community online, online social support, and perceived authenticity online significantly related to better mental health (p \u3c .05). Meanwhile, compounding minority identities predicted increased minority stress and worse mental health. Findings support minority stress theory and suggest that multiply-marginalized individuals struggle to reap the benefits of queer social media communities
Relativistic Fluids and Primordial Black Holes
No full textPrimordial black holes (PBH), unlike stellar black holes, don’t form via the death and collapse of stars. Instead, these objects may form as a result of cosmological density fluctuations, with their size depending on the cosmic horizon at the time of collapse. Better understanding these objects, how they form, and whether they exist could provide insights into early galaxy formation, supermassive black hole formation, and possibly dark matter. To simulate PBH production in the early universe, it is necessary to consider full general relativity (GR), as they are inherently relativistic objects. We added fluid equations to our numerical relativity code to simulate a radiation-dominated relativistic fluid. By starting with messy initial conditions, we can investigate if PBHs form

The Coroner System in America: an Autopsy of Expertise
No full textThe coroner is an elected or appointed position in America. The coroner has power over the death certificate, meaning they control what is put on it for cause and manner of death. However, since the position is elected, the requirements to be a coroner often do not include a medical degree. In this project I wish to look to what it means to be an expert, and if coroners would qualify as such even as non-medical personnel signing a medical and legal document
