BioLinkBERT-PR: A Large Language Model for Diagnosing Pediatric Rheumatological Disorders
Pediatric rheumatology is an understudied and underprovided field in medicine. Currently, there are only 850 pediatric rheumatologists in the United States (1). This can make it incredibly difficult to get a diagnosis, since pediatric rheumatologic disorders are rare and thus easily missed. For example, eight states have no pediatric rheumatologists at all, and only 25% of children with arthritis are able to see a rheumatologist (2). AI applications in pediatric rheumatology are lacking, likely due to the combination of a lack of interest and a lack of data. This project utilizes a large language model (LLM) to create an AI model that accurately diagnoses 9 pediatric rheumatological disorders– or the absence thereof– given input symptomatology and/or test results. This could be utilized in places without access to pediatric rheumatologists to ensure early and accurate patient diagnosis
The Metamorphosis of Memoir
This project takes shape as a hybrid, built of creative and critical analysis of changes brewing in the genre of memoir — how fragmentation takes the forefront as a distrust of narrative and rebellion against traditional memoir and historical writing of people from marginalized communities. As a queer, Hispanic woman I subscribe to the beliefs and practices of memoirists in this current age, of using fragmented writing styles and contesting truth-telling in nonfiction writing, and that it is imperative to study and emulate these emerging creative nonfiction practices in order to continue its legacy. The aim of this project is to further my understanding and analysis of these changes in literary practices from the works consulted, while continuing to push the boundaries of memoir in my creative practice through pieces that can be further developed into their own texts
Vector construction for the Constitutive and Phloem-specific Overexpression of a truncated P-type H+-ATPase, AHA3, in Arabidopsis thaliana
Arabidopsis thaliana genome harbors 11 P-type H+-ATPase encoding genes, of which Autoinhibited H+-ATPase 3 (AHA3) is involved in powering the secondary active transport of sugars into the phloem (Figure 1)1. All Ptype H+-ATPases have a C-terminal autoinhibitory domain that negatively regulates their activity2,3. We hypothesize that the phloem-specific and constitutive overexpression of AHA3 with a C-terminal deletion (tAHA3) in Arabidopsis will enhance the flux of sugars out of photosynthetically active leaves. We constructed two chimeric plasmids that will allow us to overexpress tAHA3 in a constitutive (p35S::tAHA3) or a phloem-specific (pCOYMV::tAHA3)4 manner, along with the corresponding empty vector controls
