The Rise of Ethnic Tourism in Vietnam: Staged Authenticity at Pa Vi Village, Ha Giang
No full textEthnic tourism aims to promote cultural heritage and stimulate economic development by showcasing the traditions of ethnic communities to visitors. In Ha Giang, Northern Vietnam, Pa Vi Village was developed by the government to preserve Hmong culture and enhance local tourism. Goffman’s front-stage/back-stage theory (1959) explains how cultural tourism often presents a curated performance to meet tourist expectations, while the authentic aspects of daily life remain hidden. At Pa Vi Village, front-stage elements like cultural performances and tourist-oriented homestays may not reflect the true back-stage reality of the Hmong community. This project evaluates the village’s success based on tourist feedback and interviews. While tourists generally express satisfaction with their visit, few intend to return, and the economic benefits largely favor non-Hmong homestay owners, contributing to concerns of staged authenticity in cultural representation
Magneto-Optical Kerr-Effect to Study Magnetic Semiconductors
No full textThe magneto-optical Kerr-Effect occurs when linearly polarized light is directed towards a magnetic sample subjected to a magnetic field and becomes elliptically polarized. This then produces a graph from which one can deduce the Kerr-rotation and Kerr-ellipticity, providing insights into the magnetic behavior of the sample. This summer, I worked on setting up an experiment to investigate the Kerr-effect from scratch; obtaining the equipment, building the setup, performing optical alignment, and writing LabVIEW programs. Consequently, I was able to successfully automate the experiment and measure a Kerr-rotation hysteresis loop for Fe3O4

Get PDFThe rise of AI’s influence in American life has concerned both the public and the United States Congress. Focusing on the 118th Congress, I identified 365 proposed AI-related bills, only four of which (1.09%) were ultimately passed. Using a combination of natural language processing, topic modeling, and data analysis tools, I investigated why, despite broad bipartisan public and Congressional support, Congress did not pass more AI-related legislation. Amidst shrinking party majority margins and rising polarization among the electorate and elites, the success of AI-related legislative action relies less on popularity and more on party affiliation and control
Journey to the West: A Sentiment Analysis Exploration

Set in Tang-era China, the book is a religious allegory following a Buddhist monk and his supernatural disciples who make a pilgrimage from China to India. The chaptered format of the story lends itself to a very episodic approach to conflict & resolution in the story. The text also has a myriad of different influences; it heavily draws inspiration from Buddhist folklore, Confucianist tradition, and Daoist ideology, which were the reigning schools of thought in 16th-century imperial China(the time period in which this text was most likely written). This combination of elements from three major branches of Chinese philosophy, as well as the episodic nature, make it an interesting and complex case study for sentiment analysis: how would machine learning models interpret a text that has so many different characters & plot-points, yoyo-ing between peace and conflict
