Follis of Constantine VI and Irene
No full textThe obverse of this follis depicts a frontal bust of Empress Irene. She wears a crown decorated with a cross, pinnacles, and pendilia (gemmed pendants.) Irene also wears the loros, a traditional imperial garment. In her right hand, Irene holds a globus cruciger, and in her left hand a cross scepter.
The reverse of this follis is divided into an upper and lower hemisphere. The upper hemisphere depicts a frontal bust of a beardless Constantine, wearing a crown decorated with a cross. He also wears a chlamys, or short cloak. In his right hand, Constantine holds a globus cruciger. There is a cross to his right. The lower hemisphere of the reverse is divided into 3 compartments by vertical lines. In the center compartment is an M, in the left compartment is an X, and in the right compartment is an N. The Right to a Healthy Environment: A New Human Right
No full textThe United Nations first recognized the human right to a healthy environment in 2022, but the idea of a right to a healthy environment emerged much earlier, in the 1970s. This paper uses process-tracing of case studies to examine the emergence of the idea of the right to a healthy environment and the spread of the right domestically, regionally, and internationally since 1970. I test Realist, New Liberalist, and Constructivist hypotheses for the emergence and spread of the right to a healthy environment, and find that the idea of a right to a healthy environment emerged as a result of key ideological connections between the environmental and human rights movements. I additionally find that the right to a healthy environment spread when various actors argued that it was necessary for states to acknowledge the right to a healthy environment alongside other human rights. The worsening climate crisis supported these arguments. The story of the right to a healthy environment provides valuable insight for future advocates of environmental human rights
Mary Beatrice of Modena: Royal Reproduction, Catholic Conspiracy, and the Question of Queenship
No full textThis Honors thesis - “Mary Beatrice of Modena: Royal Reproduction, Catholic Conspiracy, and the Question of Queenship” - is about gender and religion in late seventeenth-century Britain. I have chosen to focus on the Glorious Revolution (1688-89), when the last Catholic king of England and Scotland was deposed and replaced with a permanent Protestant regime. It was the last act of the Reformation in Britain. More specifically, this thesis focuses on Mary Beatrice of Modena, the queen consort of the deposed king and the matriarch of the Jacobite cause (pro Catholic monarchy) for the following decades. The importance of the seventeenth century in Britain has traditionally been evaluated through the male monarchs. However, women in the Stuart court played an important role in shaping and cultivating political and religious participation during this period, particularly the Catholic queen consorts, the last three of whom made considerable attempts to bring Catholicism back to the core of monarchical power and thus exact Catholic influence over the nation. The last of these consorts, Mary Beatrice of Modena, is of particular importance as she was the only one who produced a Catholic heir to the throne, and thus intensified Protestant anxieties about the continuation of a Catholic monarchy in England. As such, this thesis emphasizes Mary Beatrice\u27s role in the Glorious Revolution, characterized by her identity as a Catholic female ruler, in both popular perceptions and practice. This line of investigation is particularly fruitful due to the contested visions of early modern Catholic womanhood centered around politics and popular discourses of royal reproduction. In the context of popular discourse, how did Mary Beatrice exercise power during her marriage to King James VII and II? How did she and that power evolve during her time as queen consort, queen-in-exile, and regent-in-exile of England and Scotland

As a Uygur artist from Xinjiang, China, Aniwar draws on central Asian themes in his works and places them in a contemporary context. In his paintings, various cultural motifs from the artist\u27s Uighur background are employed and the theme of the desert is also dominant.
