House Sparrows Flight Velocity Measured In Three Dimensions

    No full text
This study examines the flight biomechanics of House Sparrows and the effects of sexual dimorphism in flight muscle size.To test flight performance, sparrows were encouraged to fly through an obstacle course while exposed to predator sounds, Eastern Screech Owl calls, and a researcher gently chasing them. Their flights were recorded using a high-speed camera and three GoPro Hero 9 cameras. The high-speed camera provided velocity and acceleration data in two dimensions, while my project focused on the GoPro recordings. Using Matlab and the DLTdv8 App, I analyzed the birds’ flight and observed their movement and behavior in three dimensions

Gauge Preheating with Complex Scalar Fields

    No full text
Cosmology is the study of the early universe as a dynamical system. In the early universe, we predict a period of cosmic inflation, or the rapid expansion of the universe, which leaves it cold and empty. Preheating provides a solution for thermalizing the universe and allowing for big bang nucleosynthesis to occur, which creates the universe we see today. Gauge preheating has been studied as a potential form of preheating, and its basis is centered around creating a rapid, violent process that transfers energy from the inflaton field, ϕ, to a gauge field Aμ. A consequence of using gauge fields is they must be a consequence of and coupled to charged particles in order for a radiation dominated universe and therefore big bang nucleosynthesis to occur. Here we use complex scalar fields as our charged particles to predict how efficient gauge preheating can be in the presence of these particles

    MSPAC (Machine Sequenced PulsAr Candidates)

Neutron stars are the super-dense remnants of dead stars: too massive to form a white dwarf but not massive enough to form black holes. A typical neutron star is 1-3 times the mass of our sun, but its radius is only 10-15 kilometers (roughly the size of New York City). Pulsars are rapidly spinning neutron stars that emit radio waves from their magnetic poles. We have discovered more than 3,000 pulsars through manual search methods. Past researchers at Kenyon created PAC-MANN (PulsAr-Classifier Machine-Learning Algorithm with Neural Networks). PACMANN\u27s goal is to create a machine learning algorithm that will be able to sift through pulsar candidates and find the most promising among them. My research this summer worked to fill in a vital missing piece of PAC-MANN: a lack of pulsar candidates. However, we encountered a dilemma: to train our model to find more pulsars, we need more pulsars. We decided to create an algorithm to solve this issue, which we named MSPAC (Machine-Sequenced PulsAr Candidates). MSPAC generates artificial pulsar candidates based on distributions from real pulsar data. Our goal with these machine-sequenced pulsars is to create a pulsar population indistinguishable from real pulsar populations and use these populations to train PAC-MANN
