"The Traveler" Glendale Community College Literary Magazine, 2019

by the Art and English Departments of Glendale Community College.
We believe in artistic freedom of expression, and therefore we have not
censored the contents of this publication. As a result, it is important for our
readers to understand that The Traveler may include adult content.
When Volume 52 of The Traveler coincided with the 100th anniversary of the
Bauhaus, the theme for this year was an easy choice for our design team.
The story of Bauhaus began in 1919, with the opening of the Staatliches Bauhaus
school of design in Germany. Despite the school itself only being open for fourteen
years, the ideas of Bauhaus spread across the world, and it became the most influential
design movement of the century.
The foundation of Bauhaus was the idea of intentional design that could achieve both
usefulness and beauty. This concept was applied to everything from architecture to
typography to stagecraft. Founding director Walter Gropius envisioned Bauhaus as a
utopian craft guild that united all of the arts into a single creative expression. When the
political aspects of the school increased with its next director, Hannes Meyer, the teachings
shifted toward meeting people's necessities. During this time, function became the
primary goal of Bauhaus design. The focus shifted once again with the final director of
the Bauhaus, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who emphasized aesthetic above the other
aspects of Bauhaus.
Design merging the useful and the beautiful, utilizing simple lines, and appreciating
negative space have endured over the years as essential concepts of design. The philosophy
of Bauhaus remains just as relevant today as it was 100 years ago.Credits:
