Andrew Hayes Cargill's Story
32 pages. An autobiographical account by Andrew Hayes Cargill detailing his military activity and travels. Excerpt: "The following manuscript was written by Andrew Hayes Cargill, of Yuma, Arizona, apparently in 1912. It was written in pencil, on the backs of handbills. The manuscript was loaned by Hon. John Doan (Cargill's son-in-law) to Mulford Winsor, for the purpose of making a copy ... A very small amount of editing, consisting almost exclusively of the correction of obvious errors of spelling and punctuation, was done. M.W.
The Adventures of James Collier, First Collector of the Port of San Francisco
62 pages. Excerpt from the book: "James Collier was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, in May, 1789. He served in the War of 1812 as adjutant of Bloom's regiment of New York volunteers, and was present at the battle of Queenstown Heights. He lived in Ithaca, New York, and removed to Steubenville, Ohio, in 1820. Here he studied law and was admitted to the bar. He was an active member of the Whig party, and at one time an aspirant for the nomination for governor of the state, was defeated by Thomas Corwin, who was afterwards elected. Collier served a term as county prosecutor and was a delegate to the Taylor convention of 1848. In recognition of his service President Taylor, on March 15, 1849, nominated him for the newly created post of collector of the port of San Francisco, and four days later he was confirmed by the senate. Mr. Collier made his preparations for the long and hazardous journey to his post and the secretary of war, on April 3, gave the necessary orders for transportation
