Traumatic Grief: Understanding its Psychological Impact and the Role of Therapeutic Interventions

Abstract This paper explored the psychological and emotional effects of traumatic grief, focusing on its impact on individuals who experienced sudden or violent loss. Traumatic grief is often linked to mental health conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), which can greatly affect a person\u27s emotional and psychological well-being. The paper examined the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Trauma-Focused Therapy (TFT) in treating these conditions, focusing on how these therapies address both trauma and grief at the same time. Additionally, the literature review highlighted the importance of early intervention in reducing the long-term effects of traumatic grief and emphasized the need for culturally sensitive treatments to improve their relevance and impact. The review summarized recent research data to identify key strategies that could improve current therapeutic practices and guide future interventions. It suggested that combining trauma-focused therapies like CBT and TFT with grief-centered approaches provides a more comprehensive treatment plan, leading to better emotional regulation, social functioning, and overall recovery. The paper also called for more individualized treatment plans that consider a person’s personal history and cultural background to achieve the best therapeutic outcomes. The goal was to contribute to the development of more effective, integrated, and culturally sensitive interventions for those affected by traumatic grief

Introduction Percussion therapy has gained popularity in recent years for its effectiveness in both rehabilitation and sports performance. Percussion therapy is an instrument-assisted treatment targeting soft tissue structures using torque, amplitude, and frequency for delivery. 1 Objective Evaluate the effects of localized percussion application treatment to the gluteal and sacral region on shoulder internal rotation (IR) range of motion (ROM) and isometric hamstring strength using the concept of regional interdependence 2,4,5 Participants 54 healthy adults from Concordia University - St. Paul and local exercise facilities 21 females 33 males Average age: 23.9 Methods Pre-therapeutic intervention measurements Supine shoulder IR ROM with manual goniometry Prone hamstring strength using MicroFET™ 3 Therapeutic intervention: application of percussion via Hypervolt PlusⓇ to 5 landmarks on the gluteal region for 40 seconds total Post-therapeutic intervention measurements Prone hamstring strength using MicroFET™ Supine shoulder IR ROM with manual goniometry3 Results Statistical significance (p \u3c 0.05) demonstrated for increased shoulder IR (mean difference 4.78°) and for increased hamstring strength (mean difference 2.8#) Conclusion Improvements in both measurements were found post application of percussion, theorized to be a result of neural facilitation and regional interdependence Clinical Relevance Application to a non-local site impacting a distal irritated joint. Facilitation of strength and ROM for athletes, such as a pitcher with impingement or a runner with hamstring deficits. 5 Future Research Assessment of the duration of the percussive effects following application. Assessment of the effectiveness on a population with injuries

Best Practices for Preparing Urban High School Students for College Readiness

Low-income urban students in the United States exhibit limited college and career readiness opportunities (Yavuz et al., 2019). College preparation coursework and career training in low-income urban secondary settings are essential to creating inclusivity in education. The disparities of marginalized students in these institutions highlight the urgency for educational leaders to effectively produce the next generation of student achievement. This meta-analysis secondary research paper examined the best practices for educational leaders to ensure college and career readiness opportunities are being implemented for low-income urban high school students. When students have access to college readiness materials, their scholastic goals can be achieved through exposure to academic and instructional rigor, thus increasing postsecondary capital. The study is particularly significant given that urban students from high-poverty schools often need systematic approaches that educational leaders must implement to uplift the opportunity gap. The potential benefit of this research is to fully realize what students in low-income urban areas can achieve if systems and practices are run with fidelity to enhance their education. Consequently, this research seeks to challenge traditional teaching strategies and advocate for curricular reforms that better support diverse urban student populations\u27 cultural and intellectual needs, ultimately aiming to strengthen college readiness and long-term career opportunities

Strategies for Multilingual Student Success in the Classroom

This paper analyzed current research on the effective instructional strategies used for multilingual learners to be successful in the mainstream classroom. Each year in the United States, there is a growing number of multilingual students in the mainstream classroom (Cunningham & Crawford, 2016). Students whom with the lack of knowledge of impactful strategies are not reaching their full potential and can be looked at as students with greater needs, such as a learning disability (Naiditch, 2021). This paper explored the inherent need for educators to be provided with the appropriate tools and knowledge to make education more accessible for multilingual students. By using researched based instructional strategies, the school system can support multilingual students in navigating the day-to-day school structure and assessment of language that leads to their academic growth

Beyond the Numbers: How Elementary Principals’ Beliefs, Experiences, and Contexts Shape Their Descriptions and Perceptions of Effective Data Use as Instructional Leaders

    No full text
Effective data use informs next steps in student learning and drives school improvement and systemic change, making it a critical factor in school success. Principals play a critical role in creating the conditions necessary for data use to thrive (Park & Datnow, 2009; Keuning et al., 2017; Schildkamp et al., 2019; DuFour et al., 2016; Albiladi et al., 2020). This study explored how elementary school principals describe and perceive effective data use within the context of their instructional leadership, and how these perceptions are shaped by personal beliefs, past experiences, and the educational contexts in which they lead. This qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews with eight principals from suburban elementary schools. Five themes emerged: (a) data-informed action; (b) humanizing data; (c) equity as a driving force behind data use; (d) fostering relationships, vulnerability, and trust; and (e) growing a collaborative culture. Principals described taking action as a central component of effective data use, as well as creating a collaborative culture grounded in trust and vulnerability. Their descriptions and perceptions were shaped by core beliefs, lived experiences, and individual identities. The insights gained from this study can support district leaders in strengthening principal data literacy and aligning systems to promote effective data practices. Recommendations include addressing both the technical and adaptive components of data leadership, expanding the types of data incorporated into district improvement efforts, and establishing a coherent system of supports for data use. Further research should examine teachers’ descriptions and perceptions of effective data use, and investigate the impact of data use on student learning

    No full text
Purpose: Hyperkyphosis is an abnormal sagittal plane curvature of the spine. The kyphosis angle (KA) increases as age increases, leading to fractures, falls, and potential mortality. This study aims to determine if reducing the KA improves balance, stability, and quality of life in the elderly. Methods: Thirty-one participants, including males and females, aged 63.03±9.61, participated in this study. This study used the kyphosis index (KI), which is a measurement of the distance between the occiput and the wall. Elderly individuals with an occiput wall distance (OWD) of \u3e 4cm participated in this study. The Ferrans and Powers Quality of Life questionnaire, Unipedal Balance test, Tinetti Assessment Tool, and OWD measurement were used to determine kyphosis. Participants underwent a strength training intervention targeting the posterior muscles (24 sessions, 90 minutes/day, two days/week). Participants were re-evaluated after 12 weeks using the same tests as at baseline. Paired t-tests assessed changes in all dependent variables, including KI, Tinetti Fall Risk, Eyes Open and Closed Balance test results, and self-reported quality of life. Results: Paired t-tests demonstrated that following the exercise intervention, the average kyphosis score significantly decreased (M = 8.82cm to M = 6.65cm, p \u3c .001), with a large effect size (d = 0.89), supporting the primary aim of the study. Significant improvements were also observed in quality of life (M = 22.44 to M = 24.16, p \u3c .001, d = 0.66), fall risk as measured by the Tinetti assessment (M = 26.71 to M = 27.26, p = .033, d = 0.40), and eyes-closed balance (M = 8.78 to M = 10.95, p = .045, d = 0.38). No significant change was found in eyes-open balance (p = .317)

The Lived Experiences of Physical Therapy Educators During Ethics Instruction

Physical therapy educators must prepare students to navigate the ethical complexity and pressures of clinical practice. However, limited evidence exists regarding the best pedagogical strategies to develop future clinicians\u27 ethical skills. This study aimed to explore how physical therapy ethics educators integrated their personal and professional experiences with academic elements when designing and implementing ethics instruction. The research draws from the semi-structured interviews of eight educators teaching ethics in Midwestern physical therapy programs to discover instructional patterns supporting student engagement with the content. Participants\u27 narratives specified how curriculum design considerations, critical thinking dispositions, and organizational alignment factors influenced their approach to ethics instruction. Participants\u27 belief that students acquire ethical skills by incorporating professional ethics principles with personal moral development led them to embrace a learner-centered teaching approach, aligning various instructional techniques to facilitate active student engagement. They used a flipped classroom design where lectures and readings were reserved as preparatory work while case discussion was the predominant teaching strategy for class sessions. Cases were designed to reflect ethical challenges students would likely encounter in clinical practice. Participants fostered student sharing and perspective-taking by maintaining consistent small groups, setting course norms, and tailoring discussion formats to students\u27 communication preferences. Participants modeled professional behaviors emulating the affective dispositions from critical thinking needed for empathy in clinical practice. Most programs integrated ethics across the curriculum, often following content on health disparities. Since many respondents acknowledged an incidental link between ethics and health disparities, the study\u27s findings underscore the importance of intentionally including health disparities as a contextual factor of case construction to establish a transparent link between it and the ethics principle of justice. The findings from this research study offered valuable insights for physical therapy educators to prepare their students for the uncertainties and ethical dilemmas encountered in clinical practice
