Declining Participation in Youth Sports and Its Contributing Factors
This study was designed to research the declining participation numbers of youths, ages 5 to 18, in organized sports in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Specifically, this study would look into reasons as to why youth sport participation numbers are on the decline. While the total number of youth athletes are difficult to ascertain, it is known that from 2008 to 2019 the total number of athletes participating in youth sports have been in decline for both male and female athletes (“From 2008”, 2021) Participants will take home a survey that they can complete on their own or with a parent or guardian and return it to their school. Eight schools in Minneapolis were chosen to participate in this study: four elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. These schools were chosen from all areas of Minneapolis to reflect the different diverse demographics of Minneapolis. It will be important to have schools that have various student ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and neighborhoods. This study is theoretical in nature and has not been completed. The results will not be known due to this fact
Can technology maximize the potential of today’s Generation Z student-athletes?
The approach that student-athletes practice to enhance their abilities has been significantly impacted by technology. More individualized and effective training is now possible due to use of cutting-edge technologies like virtual reality, wearable technology, and intelligent training equipment. The dependency of technology for Generation Z has created a tech savvy learning experience and this approach could help transition into the playing field of sports. Therefore, the focus of this proposed study was on Generation Z and their motivation pertaining to sports as student-athletes. This research would involve an investigation of student-athletes’ exposure to technology and how this may impact their motivation and sport performance
Women Represented in Front Office Roles in Professional Sports
There is a movement of redefining what it means to be a woman, especially a woman working in sports. The lack of female representation across the sports industry is not only a problem in the United States, but across the world (Aiaanse & Claringbould, 2016). Australia, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom have examined the issue of the underrepresentation of females working in sports (Aiaanse & Claringbould, 2016). Women have faced backlash and setbacks while trying to create a career for themselves in sports. An article by Cunningham, (2008) called, “Creating and Sustaining Gender Diversity in Sport Organizations” noted that, unlike men, “women are more likely to be placed in marginalized positions, to receive fewer returns for their human and social capital investments, face barriers in their career progression, and encounter work-family conflict” (p. 36). The purpose of this study will be to gather information from women who currently work in the professional sports industry specific to their experiences in sports. The data collected may help guide women who are interested in pursuing a career in sports
The Effect of an Instructional Video on Scoring Agreement of the ASQ-3 Between Parents and SPTs

Objective Investigate the effect of an informational training video (ITV) for parents on the level of agreement in ASQ-3 scoring between parents and SPTs as a proxy for healthcare providers
Participants 10 parents with preschool-aged children in the Hand in Hand Child Care Center, St. Paul, MN 4 SPTs at Concordia University, St. Paul, MN
Methods ASQ-3, a standardized developmental screening tool, used across a variety of settings, cultures, and age ranges, served as the outcome tool Designed to be completed by parents, childhood educators, and healthcare professionals Monitors development across 5 domains: Communication (CM), Gross Motor (GM), Fine Motor (FM), Problem Solving (PM), Personal Social (PS) Developmental screening was conducted across two testing sessions for each child (Figure 1)
Results PM had the highest percentage of agreement at 85%, followed by PS (81%), GM (78%), CM (70%), and FM (63%) Parent scores were the most variable in the CM and FM domains (Chart 1 & 2) Least variability between parent scores occurred in the PM and PS domains (Chart 1 & 2)
Conclusion Limitations include a small, homogenous group and inconsistent representation of domains in ITV The use of an ITV did not result in ASQ-3 scoring agreement between parents and SPTs
Clinical Relevance Further research is needed to fully assess the relationship between the use of an ITV and the level of agreement when administering the ASQ-3 More resources may be required to bridge the gap between parents and healthcare provider
Comparison of the accuracy of the BodyMetrixTM Ultrasound three-site and seven-site body fat percentage tests in active females
The accurate assessment of body composition can be an important aspect for individuals seeking to maintain their health and optimize performance. The BodyMetrixTM Ultrasound (BMU) is becoming increasingly popular due to its portability, however conflicting research results regarding the accuracy are present, specifically in the female population. The purpose of this study aimed to compare the three-site and seven-site BMU in active, college-aged females to air plethysmography (BOD POD). Fourteen female participants were included in the study. The average participant was 20.29±1.54 years old, 165.46±5.51 cm tall, and 63.76±8.06 kg. Participants had all three body composition tests conducted on the same day within a span of 30 minutes to eliminate any weight fluctuations. No significant difference was found between BOD POD, three- site, and seven-site BMU protocols (p=.864). The average difference between BOD POD and seven-site BMU was just under 1%, while the average of BOD POD and three-site BMU had a 0.32% difference. It was also found that the three-site test yielded a higher body fat percentage (BF%) average than the seven-site, though not statistically significant as reflected by the insignificant ANOVA results. Further research is warranted to explore the accuracy/reproducibility of the ultrasound body composition assessment in more diverse populations including body type, sex and race
A PROPOSED STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF A MOISTURIZING PRODUCT ON DRY DIABETIC FEET
Introduction: Diabetic foot syndrome causes changes to the skin barrier including neuropathy and dry skin. Left untreated, this can lead to amputation. It has been suggested that diabetic skin may benefit from regular moisturizer use to treat dry skin.
A proposed cohort research study of diabetic patients with dry skin designed to evaluate the efficacy of daily or weekly use of a moisturizing matrix-suspended emollient/occlusive foot soak.
Methods: A minimum of 150 diabetic patients with mild-to-moderate dry skin conditions would be recruited from podiatrists or O&P clinics. With informed patient consent, they would be randomly selected to be in a control group (no moisturizer use), a 1x daily use, or a 1x weekly use group to use the moisturizing matrix-suspended emollient/occlusive foot soak. Both physician (blinded to group assignment) and subjects would assess skin condition at baseline (day 0) versus end (day 28 +/-5 days) using a dry skin classification scale and the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS). Subjects would also rate quality of life (QOL) before the trial and after, noting improvement, product satisfaction, safety and tolerability.
Hypothesis: Both Physicians and patients will report improvement on the dry skin classification scale and quality of life (QOL) measures. Physicians will report improvement of dry skin from the baseline (day 0) to end (day 28 +/- 5 days) on the GAIS. Patients using moisturizing foot soak daily will show the most improvement of dry skin and QOL, patients using it weekly will show some improvement of dry skin and QOL. Patients in the control group will show no improvement on dry skin classification or QOL.
Significance: This study will show whether this product is effective at improving dry skin conditions and quality of life for diabetic patients
The Potential of Virtual Reality to Improve the Quality of Life for People with Phantom Limb Pain (NON-THESIS)
Phantom limb pain (PLP) is a common and often debilitating condition that affects people who have lost a limb. It is characterized by pain in a limb that is no longer there. Several treatments are available for PLP, but they are only sometimes practical. For some people, no treatment works. Some people find relief with medication, while others benefit from physical or psychological counseling.
Virtual reality (VR) is a new technology explored as a potential treatment for PLP. VR creates a simulated environment that can immerse a person in a distinct reality. VR can help people with PLP to visualize their missing limb and to move it in a controlled way. VR is a promising new treatment for PLP. It is a non-invasive and safe treatment that can improve the quality of life for people with this condition. More research is needed to confirm the effectiveness of VR for PLP, but the results of the studies conducted so far are encouraging.

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Arnoldo Curiel is a Mexican male born on June 22nd, 1972. He lived with his parents and three siblings. Both of his parents worked. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Curiel talks about growing up in a tight-knit family. He talked about how his parents worked late nights and the kids had to fend for themselves. Curiel mentions how his family\u27s financial circumstances influenced his spending habits as an adult, initially leading him to overspend on his own children to make up for his own upbringing, and how he has adjusted that over time. Curiel talks about some of the religious practices his family participated in during holidays. He talked about the deep faith some of his extended family holds. He also touches on his own beliefs today. Curiel goes on to talk about how you really knew your neighbors growing up in Frogtown and how neighbors would look out for each other. Curiel talks about friends he had growing up. Curiel talks about his time in school, some of the racial dynamics at play at school, and a teacher that left an impression on him. Curiel discusses some of the issues that occurred when he was growing up like the crack epidemic, drug war, racial divide, and poverty. His father was a part owner of a family business, and his mother did not work. Baker grew up Catholic but now identifies as Buddhist. SUBJECTS DISCUSSED: Baker talks about his family and neighborhood. He discusses his family\u27s business that has been passed down and his financial priorities. Baker also talks about his Catholic upbringing in the Church and schooling, reflecting on his foundations of faith and his current beliefs. Additionally, Baker discusses the freedoms of childhood and how he gained more freedom as more transportation options opened up during his upbringing. Use of self-selected, synchronous music as an ergogenic aid in workout performance: A mixed-methods study
The present study investigated the use of self-selected, synchronous music as an ergogenic aid in workout performance by evaluating measures of heart rate and RPE and participant interviews. Male and female participants (n=9) performed a workout of five exercises (bicep curl, military press, wide stance leg press, leg extension, and tricep kickback), under three different music conditions (when listening to self-selected, synchronous music, when listening to researcher-selected synchronous music, or when listening to a metronome set at 120 bpm). The quantitative portion of the study found that there was no significant impact of self-selected, synchronous music upon participant mean heart rate or RPE based on music condition. However, the qualitative interviews of the study provided support for use of self-selected music during exercise. Given these results and potential to improve workout performance, more research is needed on the use of self-selected, synchronous music and exercise
