Music Genre Selection on Enjoyment and Performance in CrossFit Athletes

    No full text
High intensity interval training (HIIT) has become one of the most popular fitness trends across the world and CrossFit is considered an alternative HIIT workout. There are studies that have shown that enjoyment and participation in exercise decrease during HIIT sessions. Music has been shown that when played during exercise, it can prompt positive emotions and heighten compliance. The objective of this study is to compare two music genres, electronic dance music (EDM) and hard rock, and if they positively influence enjoyment and performance. Fifteen experienced CrossFit athletes will be recruited to participate in two exercise sessions. One session would play EDM and the second session would play hard rock. Performance will be measured with the Borg Modified 11-point RPE Scale and the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) will be used to measure enjoyment. Results should show that either or both music genres positively improved performance and/or enjoyment, negatively improved performance and/or enjoyment, or does not affect either variable. This study can help facilitate group CrossFit classes by improving their athletes’ mood and performance based on the type of music that is played during each session. Keywords: CrossFit, music genre, high-intensity interval training, hard rock, ED

Gender-Responsive Supervision Six Guiding Principles, Barriers, and Benefits of Implementation

    Get PDF
Over the years, the goals of probation have remained the same: to increase community safety and reduce recidivism; however, as the world changes, the needs of offenders have changed. Evidence-based practices are used in probation to determine risk levels and create targeted case plans. The criminal justice system has seen an increase in female offenders, which has brought up valid questions of evaluation tools and supervision practices. The quest to provide the most effective services to all offenders brings innovation, research, and change. Gender-responsive supervision is the answer to how to best serve female offenders. Change is a natural evolution, but with change comes challenges. Gender-responsive supervision has its own unique set of challenges, such as assessing readiness for change, identifying quality leadership, creating buy-in from both internal and external stakeholders, understanding and identifying the unique pathways females have into the system, and molding those areas of need into case plans supported by cognitive skills and interventions as well as identifying potential ethical dilemmas. Gender-responsive supervision adheres to evidence-based practices with programming modeled around six guiding principles. Current, validated, evidence-based tools are utilized with the addition of supplemental assessments that target female-specific risk areas, also known as pathways, effectively creating a more comprehensive case plan

Recruitment and Retention of Millennials and Generation Z in the Criminal Justice Field: How Do We Replenish the Ranks?

    Get PDF
The Criminal Justice field is, and has been, experiencing a drastic decrease in the number of individuals willing to take on this unique calling. This decline can be attributed to several factors, primarily concerns about safety, the current political and social environment, work schedules, and personal life influences. The purpose of this paper and research is to examine the causes of the ongoing hiring crisis in the field of Criminal Justice and propose potential solutions. Through research, several contributing factors have been identified that can help agencies at various levels recruit and retain Criminal Justice candidates. This is an ongoing area of study, as the hiring issues are just beginning to emerge, requiring further research and investigation. Law Enforcement agencies and government will have to work together to present multiple viable options for the continued recruitment and retainment of Millennials and Generation Z in the Criminal Justice field. This paper will present some of those options while delivering other possibilities that have yet to be discussed or decided on

Effects of Barbell Deadlifting on Manual Labor Workers with Low Back Pain

    No full text
Abstract Low back pain is a widespread problem that most people will experience in their life. It has been found that manual labor workers experience high rates of low back pain but lack time to dedicate to exercise training programs targeting low back pain. Therefore, there is a need to find the optimal exercise for reducing low back pain in a limited amount of time. This study is designed to help determine if a deadlift can reduce low back pain and improve function in manual labor employees with chronic low back pain. Twice a week, 40 participants will perform a 12-week deadlift program that is approximately 30 minutes long. The participants will fill out the Visual Analog Scale and Oswestry Low Back Disability Questionnaire at baseline and at Weeks 4, 8, and 12. By the end of the 12-week program, it is predicted that pain based of the Visual Analog Scale and disability based off of the Oswestry Disability Index will be decreased, indicating that the participants may be more resistant to injury due to being stronger in performing their jobs. The study will help determine guidelines for treating people with chronic low back pain and identify if deadlifts may be implemented as a rehabilitation treatment for low back pain. Gender Impact on Trauma-Exposed Populations

    Get PDF
Gender differences in trauma exposure have been well-established in published research. This paper explored the relationship between gender and its impact on exposure to traumatic events and the outcomes within trauma-exposed populations. Trauma can have profound and lasting effects on physical, mental, social, and behavioral well-being. The literature review identified gender differences in exposure to trauma types, PTSD prevalence and symptomatology, other mental health disorders, behavioral outcomes, and differences in physical health. Additionally, it explored the role of support systems, coping mechanisms, and risk factors for particular trauma-related outcomes. Furthermore, this paper examined the implications of the findings for professional practice and future research. The problem has been significant in the field of education as teachers need to understand the effects of trauma and how to meet the needs of students to help them recover and learn. Through thorough analysis of existing research, there has been an overwhelming disparity of studies on trauma-exposed women. The synthesis of this collection of research created a better understanding of the outlined differences in trauma exposure and outcomes by gender but also highlighted the need for gender-sensitive approaches to research and professional practice. The insights gained from the studies emphasized the need to create interventions and policies to mitigate the effects of trauma differences by gender. Keywords: trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), outcomes, gender differences, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs

Fostering Self-Efficacy and Autonomous Motivation to Aid in Mastering High-Order Writing Skills

    Get PDF
Students need to be able to write to be successful in school, personal life, and professional settings. In upper elementary, fourth- through fifth-grades, students shift from basic to high-order writing skills. The increased cognitive load can overwhelm students and even lead to task avoidance. Self-efficacy and autonomous motivation assist students in engaging and sustaining complex tasks. This literature evaluated fifteen primary research studies on how teachers may foster these constructs to aid in students’ development of high-order writing skills. Three strands were revealed. The first strand explored the state of writing instruction - the influence of standards-based educational systems and teacher preparation - according to the researchers. The second strand described the sociodemographic makeup of student groups found in the research, predominantly gender, achievement level, and grade. The third strand revealed best practices for fostering autonomous motivation and self-efficacy within the classroom: relationship building and classroom environment, explicit instruction and peer assistance, choice and creativity, and integration. However, the research had limitations. While most researchers recorded socioeconomic status, ELL status, and special needs, these categories were rarely mentioned as the other student sociodemographics for written instruction. Another limitation was the lack of practical advice on implementing best practices within a standards-based education system. These limitations provided opportunities for future research. In conclusion, this literature review encouraged teachers to foster autonomous motivation and self-efficacy to aid in the mastery of high-order writing skills
