Crisis Intervention Policing: Navigating the Past and Adapting to the Future
Get PDFLaw enforcement personnel often find themselves responding to crisis calls involving mental health disorders or behaviors; however, standard police training sometimes lacks proper protocol or resources to manage such scenarios without resorting to the use of force. The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program is one potential resource that offers law enforcement personnel the tools to handle mental health crises effectively, but implementing it requires a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategy to build community trust and improve responses. This paper emphasizes law enforcement\u27s need to adopt creative, compassionate, and ethical approaches in mental health crises due to past tensions and inadequate training. It introduces a transformative action plan based on stewardship principles to improve outcomes for individuals in crisis, police officers, communities, and the criminal justice system stakeholders. The traditional approach of how law enforcement responds to crisis calls involving individuals with mental health issues has come under scrutiny due to its use of force, lack of training, and inadequate mental health resources. This paper identifies stakeholders that would support or oppose a proposed change to address this issue, its legal ramifications, court decisions, public policies, and legislation helping or hindering it
Defund the Antiquated Training: A Call for the Training Law Enforcement Officers Deserve
No full textPolice officer training in the United States is well below the average compared to first-world countries. In Minnesota, the average number of hours needed to obtain a peace officer license is below the national average. With no current legislation to address this, it is incumbent upon law enforcement organizations to address this issue by increasing effective police training hours. Criminal justice organizations have an ethical and moral duty to provide police officers with practical training. Police training must be balanced with many other public safety efforts expected by society. When implementing a police officer training program, considerations need to be made for rules set by the state and federal governments. These potential legal issues are discussed by analyzing set by the Minnesota State Legislature and the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training. This was followed by a discussion on liability for criminal justice organizations on decisions set by the United States Supreme Court

While holding probationers accountable is still the expectation, agencies have begun to embrace evidence-based interventions to guide client change instead of a more punitive approach. The creation of specialized mental health probation caseloads is a natural evolution of supervision. The purpose of a specialized mental health caseload is to create a pathway for the ethical supervision of clients experiencing serious and persistent mental illness. Administrators who are committed to compassionate service will be most impactful when they consider the many potential ethical implications for both the client and the probation practitioner assigned to the caseload. The implementation of a specialized mental health caseload into probation requires effective leadership. There are many factors to address during the implementation process. These can include organizational readiness, staffing needs, stakeholder engagement, and budgetary constraints
Risk of vertebral artery dissection following chiropractic manipulation
No full textThe risk of having a stroke after receiving medical care is something that many people fear. Specifically, this study is looking at the risk after seeing a chiropractor. This study will look to determine what the chances are of having a stroke after receiving chiropractic manipulation. Past research has shown that stroke, after chiropractic care, is more common in the young adult population. One important detail that this study will try to determine is whether there is a correlation or a causation in patients who had a stroke after receiving care from a chiropractor. We looked at studies that have been done within the last 10 years to compare our research to. This study will find that there is a correlation between stroke and chiropractors and not a causation. This research aims to impact the chiropractic community as a whole, as well as the general public and their views towards chiropractic
Use of Orthotics Compared to Surgical Intervention in Canines for Treating Cranial Cruciate Ligament Injuries

One of the significant causes of instability of the joint, pain, lameness, and other conditions in a canine\u27s stifle joint is a Cranial cruciate ligament injury. This is quite often treated surgically, but sometimes, that is not an option due to concerns such as age, size, other comorbidities, or costs associated with surgery. Orthotics and prosthetics are catching on with some veterinarians, but many still do not see the potential for the benefit they provide. The use of a stifle orthosis to treat cranial cruciate ligament injuries is believed to be an effective option for treatment when surgery is not an option. This study used pre-and post-treatment evaluation by a veterinarian to observe 30 canines that met specific criteria and underwent surgical treatment for an injury to their cranial cruciate ligament and 30 who received an orthosis as a treatment for a cranial cruciate ligament injury. It used a lameness scale of 0-5; these values were recorded at their initial appointment before treatment and following treatment at their follow-up appointment. The study looked to see if there are similar recovery levels with both treatment options. If the data that has not yet been gathered proves the hypothesis correct and orthoses can provide recovery rates on par with, or close to, the surgical treatment method, it could lead to increased use of orthoses as treatment options in canines and other animals
Peak Performance Age of Professional Female Soccer Players
No full textProfessional soccer teams are the most successful when players, coaches, and managers have the best up-to-date knowledge of each player’s skills and abilities now and likely in the future. One key to this is knowing when in their career a player would be expected to perform at their best. A review of the previous literature showed that male footballers have been studied far more than their female counterparts, with player ratings created, and both physical and technical abilities were measured and more. Women’s soccer studies centered primarily around young adolescent players or peak performance physically, rather than a player’s technical ability. This research looked to close the gap by discovering the age of peak performance of female professional soccer players based on game performance. This study collected data from players within the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and evaluated several key performance statistics during each of their playing years within the league. For each player that played at least 4 years in the NWSL, they receive a ranking for each measured statistic, 1 for the best year they had in that category with increasing numbers up to their worst year. An average of all rankings in one year was determined and each player’s peak performance year was the one with the lowest average ranking. Hypothetical results are discussed
Can Off-The-Shelf Limb Protectors Protect Postoperative Transtibial Amputees from Falls?
No full textThere are over 150,000 lower limb amputations done per year and 16% of those new amputees will report a fall. The consequence of those falls is a mean additional stay in a medical facility of 32.5 days. It is well established in the literature that the use of a limb protector decreases the time of healing, but there are not any studies to show that the limb protector protects the limb during a fall. This study will survey 400 amputees over 10 months. This survey will identify if various experiences in the post-operative to prosthetic fitting stage of care (including falls) had an impact on the time it took to be fit with a prosthesis. This study has the potential to legitimize the current limb protectors or support the need for more studies to be performed to make limb protectors more effective
