The Bias and Mistreatment of Women in Sports: Why is Being a Female Athlete So Complex?

    No full text
In a world where sports have traditionally been dominated by men, female athletes face unique obstacles that can impact their performance, opportunities, and overall well-being. Women\u27s sports has some of the most talented, hardworking, and athletic women, but they are not recognized for the work that they do. Women\u27s sports need more recognition and support. The exposure that the women\u27s game needs will help expand the sponsorship, media, and economic support. The purpose of this study is to examine the discrepancies that women basketball players face due to the lack of equity. The research is literature-based that explains the treatment of women basketball players. Not only on the professional level but also the collegiate level. The question is ‘what role do media consumption (television viewing, sports viewing, and attention to coverage of specific types of sports), sports participation (participation in organized sports, personal fitness, and playing specific types of sports), gender role socialization (as measured by attitudes toward masculinity) and demographics (gender and ethnicity) play in the gender typing of sports?’ The significance of this research was to show that the discrepancies of lack of media attention, sexualization, and societal expectations all have an impact on how women athletes are viewed. These women need more support, more constructive media attention, and to have equal treatment as male athletes

A Survey of Prosthetic Services in the New Zealand Realm; Tokelau, Niue, the Cook Islands, and New Zealand

The rates of non-communicable diseases and obesity are on the rise, and the state of health for Pacific peoples in New Zealand is not improving. In 20 years’ time, a quarter of all New Zealand’s Pacific peoples could be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. These estimates are disproportionately higher for Pacific Islanders when compared to other New Zealanders. This increase of New Zealand’s diabetic population will likely lead to a rise in diabetes related amputations. Addressing these inequalities of the New Zealand healthcare system will enable people to live longer, more healthy lives. Therefore, the need to reduce the literature gap of meaningful research on amputation rates, the delivery of prostheses, and the quality of care for these populations is evident. This cross-sectional study aims to address this literature gap by evaluating the perceptions of prosthetic devices and services of prosthetic users in the urban Zealand compared to those living in remote islands of the New Zealand Realm. The outcome measurements will come from a customized questionnaire which will be distributed to participants in partnership with local District Health Boards. The survey will assess the patients’ mobility, ask specific questions related to satisfaction with prosthetic and orthotic devices and associated services, and will contain the Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with Assistive Technology questionnaire (QUEST). This work has the potential to change healthcare policy and approaches to better serve the populations under New Zealand’s Ministry of Health

Sensory Hand Drums for Autism Spectrum and Sensory Processing Disorders: Development and Application

    No full text
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is determined by certain delays in social interactions, motor coordination, cognitive brain functioning, and other behavior issues. A common symptom that children with ASD have is known as sensory processing disorder (SPD), which is conducive to difficulties with interpreting and processing sensory input. There are studies that have determined that music and rhythms therapies have benefited this population in several ways including social interactions and cognitive brain functioning. This study focused on designing a sensory drum as a resource tool for special education teachers, music and occupational therapists to incorporate that would allow for multiple sensory inputs while playing the drum. There were two repurposed drums used as idea models provided to nine evaluators from a local middle school. The evaluators provided positive feedback for the overall design concepts and implementations in multiple settings. From this feedback a final design was created with different materials incorporated into the drum that would provide varying sensations. The concept for using a sensory drum comes from combining the physicality and motor coordination of drumming and the cognitive learning of the music and rhythm patterns

    No full text
This paper discusses the motivations and influences that caters to an individual’s ability to consistently participate in exercise related activity. The industry experience was conducted at the YMCA in which participants aged 14 through 89 had the opportunity to engage with a trainer and discuss their fitness goals and experiences during their fitness journey. The membership base primary consists of young adults aged 19-26, however, the primary participants in the orientational classes were that of senior ages which were from 55-89. In addition, this paper goes over the essential skills and tools that are needed of a trainer to successfully influence and help their client reach their fitness goals. Furthermore, it is only through engagement in which the trainer will truly gain an understanding of the needs of the individual so it is essential that the trainer adapts their skill set and style to the client so that they can optimally assist those in need

An Analysis: Interpersonal Conflict Resolution in Children\u27s Television

    Get PDF
Children in the United States today are consuming television at a vastly higher rate than we have seen before (Sigman, 2012). Due to this hands off approach, there has been an increase in parents\u27 cognition of what television their children are consuming which includes both entertainment television or educational television. The researchers highlighted the importance of teaching proper interpersonal conflict resolution to children through the television they are consuming as they learn through all observations. We highlighted the types of conflicts that are depicted in the children\u27s show Bluey which is an educational children\u27s television series produced in Australia. Researchers also determined different types of conflict management that was used throughout the show\u27s season. By conducting research on the most recent full season of Bluey, we were able to pinpoint the time spent on said conflicts with the attributing factors such as third party interventions. The literature has supported the hypothesis that the demonstration of proper conflict resolution through the television children watch is pivotal to their intellectual growth and development

    Get PDF
Pseudologia fantastica (PF) is a rare phenomenon that has not been well-researched outside of clinical observations and case studies. This article attempts to further explore how PF is defined, and the characteristics of this condition that differs from typical forms of lying. Based on the most current research, the etiological development will be examined with focus given to the psychological mechanisms that are thought to underlie the course of this behavior. The application of PF in forensic settings and related psychological disorders will also be reviewed. In addition, treatment strategies when working with clients presenting with PF characteristics are suggested, with current limitations and future recommendations provided
