Some problems of the transhumanist conception of love
The transhumanist conception of love broadly states that we should transform romantic love through the means of science and advanced technology. Advocates of the transhumanist conception of love usually claim that the right technological transformation of biological groundings of romantic love could solve some of our current problems with love. Proponents of the transhumanist conception of love therefore typically believe that the correct realization of their proposal would also lead to the enhancement of romantic love. In this study I will, however, argue that this may not be the case. The first part of the study is dedicated to the description of the concept and philosophy of the transhumanist conception of love. The second part of the study is centered on the analysis of the premises for the transhumanist conception of love. The third part is focused on the possibility of misuses of transhumanist love. And in the last part I will try to show that the correct realization of transhumanist love could implicate consequences that may be troublesome for the philosophical assumptions about the benefits of the conception of transhumanist love
Monotheism in Israel and Judah among archaeology, text and ideology : new impulses, new evidence, new interpretations
With the help of current archaeological results and by means of the reinterpretation of core textual traditions relating to the issue of cult, centralization, and monotheism, this study analyses the development of Jahvistic religion in Southern Levant with particular emphasis laid on interactions between Judah and its neighbouring territorial entities, Israel, Philistia and Moab. The author points out that a demonstrably aniconic form of monotheism was a reality only from the very final phasis of the existence of the Kingdom of Judah at the earliest and that the very concept of monotheism had been preceded by the idea of centralization adopted from the north, from the Omride dynasty ruling in the 9th and early 8th centuries BCE in Samaria. Though the close relation between Israel and Judah are concealed in a conventional reading and understanding of biblical texts, detailed analysis focused on the ideological decoding of these texts along with the use of archaeological data and the reading of other ancient textual sources results in a more complex image of religion in the region under consideration
Praktický význam spirituality v procese zvládania neobvyklých mentálnych symptómov
This article is primarily theoretical. The main purpose is to outline a research approach that would contribute to a social-scientific view of alternative spirituality in the context of everyday life. I will explore the possible meanings and functions that alternative spirituality can have as one of the cultural resources that is used to cope with unusual physical and mental symptoms. Typical examples of such symptoms are hearing voices, communication with non-human beings, strange feelings in the body, uncontrollable body movement, and changes in sensory perception. These symptoms can result in a variety of personal and professional crises. I try to illustrate the proposed theoretical approach to the study of spirituality using empirical data from my dissertation research, which were obtained through biographical interviews. The basic criterion for the selection of communication partners and their inclusion in the research was their experience with unusual mental and physical symptoms and their effort to manage this experience through the concept of psychospiritual crisis. I try to show how alternative spirituality in the context of the concept of psychospiritual crisis helped my communication partners to cope with their symptoms through a new understanding of this experience. To do this, I employ methodological and theoretical tools from various scientific fields, such as the anthropology of health and illness, transcultural psychiatry, and science and technology studies
Jus post bellum and global responsibility for peace
The article deals with the newly discussed set of principles that focus on various issues concerning the end of a war and the establishment of peaceful conditions for the society after a war ends. It also reveals some drawbacks of the jus post bellum principles and searches for its possible modifications into a more complex and applicable set of rules that should govern any post-war activities on both sides of the conflict. The aim is to reach its plausibility in a dynamic global society and thus argue that global peace is an attainable goal only when it becomes the goal of the global community
