Analysing The Prospects For The Chinese Console Game Industry Based On The Case Studies Of US European And Japanese Markets
This research focuses on the prospects of the Chinese video game industry byanalysing market analyses from the US, Europe and Japan. It employs acomprehensive mixed-method approach that integrates both quantitative andqualitative research methods to provide a well-rounded understanding of the consolegaming industry's global dynamics, providing important insights for studying thedevelopment of China's game industry. The study is grounded in the interpretivistresearch philosophy, which emphasizes the importance of understanding cultural andcontextual factors influencing the gaming markets. By comparing the marketenvironment, consumer preferences and regulatory frameworks in these regions, thisstudy aims to shed light on how China can leverage these insights to overcome itsunique challenges and seize the opportunities for growth in China's console gamemarket.The research adopts a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative andqualitative analysis. Survey respondents included both Chinese players baseddomestically and overseas, and were designed to collect data on gaming preferences,consumption patterns and the impact of market regulation. These quantitative dataprovide a foundation for understanding Chinese gaming behaviour and marketdynamics and allow for comparative analysis with more established markets such asthe US, Europe and Japan. In addition, qualitative data was collected through focusgroup discussions, exploring gamers' perceptions of cultural influences, localisationstrategies and the impact of regulatory policies on game choice. These discussionsrevealed insights into the cultural and regulatory factors that influence the Chinesegames market, contrasting the gamer experience with other regions.Researcher used descriptive statistical analysis to process the quantitative data,helping to identify key trends and characteristics of the games market indifferent regions. The researcher also conducted a thematic analysis of the qualitativedata to identify recurring themes and cultural insights, providing insights into thesocio-economic and cultural dynamics that shape the global games industry. In markets with strict gameregulations, such as China, policy factors play a key role in influencing consumerbehaviour and the overall market landscape.By comparing the Chinese market environment with more mature gaming markets,the study provides practical insights for Chinese game developers, policymakers andinvestors. It outlines strategic recommendations to boost the development of thedomestic console game industry, including adopting policies that are more conduciveto consumer development, investing in the localisation of game content and learningfrom the international success stories in the US, Europe and Japan. These findings areintended to help provide a deeper understanding of the future direction of China'sconsole game industry and provide a roadmap for its sustainable development.The study highlights the importance of customised strategies that balance localcultural elements with global gaming trends. An evaluation of the special needs educational programme for children at M’Lop Tapang in Southwest Cambodia
M’Lop Tapang is a registered non-governmental organisation working in Sihanoukville,Southwest Cambodia. It provides services to around 5000 vulnerable children and around 2500 families as part of its special needs programme. The key aim of the programme is to assist with the growth and development of children and young people, being responsive totheir individual needs.The University of Salford School of Health and society has established and maintained strong working relationships with M’Lop Tapang for over a decade, which is supported by a memorandum of understanding (MOU). One objective of the MOU is to occasionally assist in the evaluation of services provided at M’Lop Tapang. This report records the secondary data analysis evaluation of M’Lop Tapang’s internal study of its Special Needs Programme.In November 2023, individual interviews were completed with 50 parents who have children enrolled in M’Lop Tapang’s Special Needs Programme. The purpose was to gain perspective of the parents and caregivers about the effectiveness of the programme. Each of the 50 parents/caregivers interviewed had one child in the programme (35 boys/15 girls). The average age of the child was 9.36 years old (9 years, 4 months and 11 days). The children included attend the programme for a varying number of days each week. The series of questions asked of the parents/caregivers focused on common concerns that most parents/caregivers have previously reported when choosing childcare options.Overall, 61% of parents/caregivers felt their children were safe; 66% felt they were cared for by suitably qualified staff; and 80% felt their child was developing independence. Multi-seasonal eDNA metabarcoding highlights a resurgence in fish diversity across a severely impacted estuarine ecosystem
Aquatic ecosystems have been in an alarming state of decline for decades. Therefore, there is an urgent need for more accessible and rapid monitoring methods that will ultimately allow for restoration programmes to be implemented. In this study, we deployed environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding as a fish monitoring tool in the Mersey estuarine system (UK), where ecosystem productivity has been severely impacted by water quality degradation since the Industrial Revolution. Monthly water samples were collected over a year (2023-2024) throughout the estuary, covering saline, brackish and freshwater zones. Overall, 69 species of fish were detected, increasing the number of known species within the estuary in comparison to both historical and contemporary records (46 and 39, respectively), with a generally higher observed richness within the upper estuary sampled zones where the water chemistry is predominantly freshwater. Notably, we identified several species returning to the system for the first time since pre-industrial times. Peak species richness was recorded during the winter season (December-February). Species compositions varied significantly by month and spatially by zone within months, but not when grouped seasonally. Furthermore, around ∼15% of the species detected were diadromous, with the endangered Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, for example, being frequently detected during its key migratory period. This study highlights the resurgence in fish diversity in a once biologically depleted estuarine ecosystem and demonstrates how eDNA metabarcoding can be implemented for detecting historically absent species, thereby enhancing restoration monitoring efforts globally
Unmasking cancer’s silent saboteurs: T regulatory cells as therapeutic targets in immunotherapy
Introduction: T regulatory cells (Tregs) are key modulators of the immune system with dual roles. While protective against autoimmunity, Tregs can exhibit immunosuppressive capabilities, allowing the tumor to evade immune recognition and destruction, and favoring tumor progression. Targeting Tregs to reduce their immunosuppressive ability offers a promising strategy to boost anti-tumor immunity and improve cancer treatment outcomes.Areas covered: This review explores the role of Tregs in the immune system, delves into their contribution to cancer and tumor progression, and highlights therapeutic strategies targeting Tregs, along with innovative delivery systems.Expert opinion: Targeting tumor-infiltrating regulatory T cells (Tregs) represents a promising but complex approach in cancer immunotherapy. However, its success is limited by the risk of autoimmunity, inefficient intratumoral delivery, and patient immune heterogeneity. Precision strategies integrating biomarker-guided stratification, single-cell, and spatial profiling can improve selectivity and therapeutic outcomes. Identifying tumor-specific Treg markers and distinguishing stable, suppressive Tregs from more plastic or 'fragile' subsets are essential for advancing targeted immunotherapies. Partial functional reprogramming of tumor-resident Tregs, rather than their complete depletion, offers a strategy to weaken their suppressive capacity while retaining peripheral immune regulation, thus promoting local anti-tumor responses without disrupting tolerance
Understanding homeowner decision-making through demographics: Barriers to housing retrofit at scale
Housing retrofit is vital for meeting sustainability goals, yet limited homeowner demand remains a significant barrier to widespread adoption. While challenges such as skills shortages and supply chain issues also exist, a strong homeowner demand could drive solutions to these obstacles. Despite the availability of grant schemes, homeowner interest in retrofitting remains low, slowing adoption rates and impeding national sustainability targets. Based on data from a questionnaire survey of UK homeowners, this study explores how demographic factors shape homeowner decision-making behaviour. Statistical analysis reveals several key insights: (1) homeowners primarily view retrofitting as an investment, seeking returns through energy bill savings; (2) concern over unintended consequences of retrofitting impacts willingness to participate; and (3) educational level strongly influences homeowner behaviour. These findings offer valuable perspectives for developing large-scale retrofit strategies, addressing the underlying behavioural barriers that have hindered the success of existing retrofit programs
Spiking Neural Dynamics and Federated Routing for Ultralow‐Latency in 6G Industry 5.0
The implementation of advanced communication technologies with intelligent systems under Industry 5.0 demands ultralow-latency 6G networks to support seamless human-machine connections. This study introduces SNN optimization for low-latency 6G (SNN-LL6G) Communication, which transforms delayed interactions into high-speed communications suited for Industry 5.0 applications. The SNN-LL6G methodology exists as an event-based processing framework with spiking neural networks (SNNs) temporal dynamics for executing real-time operations through low-latency execution. Through spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP)-based biologically-inspired learning, the model develops real-time adaptable strategies for communication path selection while optimizing resource utilization based on its acquired industrial frame experience. The efficiency of SNN operating systems is enhanced through federated learning (FL) strategies, which conduct model adaptations on local system storage to decrease transmission time delays. In addition, graph neural networks (GNNs) enhance the performance of 6G network optimization by applying routing strategy refinement to topological structures, thus reducing latency levels. The SNN-LL6G method demonstrated experimental findings that proved its capability to reduce latency by 70%, which promotes improved network efficiency, better energy utilization, and strengthened network robustness. The arrival of Industry 5.0 stands for progress in manufacturing , implying the cooperation between new communication technologies and smart systems to develop innovative and flexible means of production [1]. Unlike Industry 4.0, which is centered around automation and the IoT, Industry 5.0 is a strategy that also involves interlinking people and computers in an organization to work harmoniously in carrying out organizational tasks and advancing efficiency and creativity. Implementing Safeguarding to Counter Extremism in the Classroom: Practicalities, Practices and Problematiques
Our objectives in the article are twofold. First, we draw on empirical evidence to extend debates around the problems and issues faced by teachers responsible for the delivery of counter-radicalisation measures in secondary educational contexts in the UK. Second, we identify persistent and demanding challenges for teachers arising from the mandatory incorporation of Prevent Duty Guidance into day-to-day professional practices. Drawing on a qualitative study, we use interview data to expose the ways in which educators both navigate their commitments and grapple with the quandaries that arise from carrying out safeguarding duties designed to counter radicalisation. Presenting data from teachers working in secondary educational contexts, we illuminate two key issues of concern: resource capacity and the prevalence of ‘safety-first’ decision-making in conditions of uncertainty
(Hetero)sex, ‘fun’ and university life: the discursive construction of women students’ experiences of sexual violence at university
There is growing recognition of the issue of sexual violence experienced by women university students in the UK. Despite increased attention, problems with prevalence, reporting, support and institutional responses persist. There is, therefore, a need to better understand students’ experiences and perceptions of sexual violence and the context in which these incidents occur in order to develop effective, theoretically informed responses which follow from students’ experiences. This article presents findings from research which explored the nature and extent of women students’ experiences of sexual violence at one university in England. Reporting on semi-structured interviews with students, the article addresses a gap in evidence by using a poststructuralist framework to understand the dominant gendered and heterosexed discourses which shape the nature, extent and understanding of sexual violence and construct a ‘truth’ about expectations of university life. It applies and extends Gavey’s (2005) concept of the cultural scaffolding of rape to consider students’ experiences in the university context in which they took place. It is argued that these discourses produce contextually contingent gendered subjectivities which are at times resisted but are also amplified in the space of the university, further limiting the ways in which students can make sense of their experiences
The dependence of urban tick and Lyme disease hazards on the hinterlands
Within- and between-city contexts and interactions shape our experiences of city life. However, a gap in understanding is how the wider landscape context of cities and the interactions with hinterlands influence urban ecology and health hazards. Using a meta-ecosystem framework, we fill this gap for the tick-borne Lyme disease ecological system by comparing the tick and Lyme disease hazards of urban and hinterland sites for 16 UK cities. We discover that the environmental hazards of ticks and Lyme disease of urban greenspaces are two- and threefold lower, respectively, than those of hinterland woodlands. Crucially, urban tick and Lyme disease hazards are shaped by tick abundance and the landcover (woodland and built-up) of hinterlands, but not of cities themselves. This highlights how rural–urban interactions form meta-ecosystems, and urban eco-epidemiology can depend on the characteristics of the surrounding rural landscape. Therefore, to better understand urban ecological processes and to mitigate disease risk in cities, it may be necessary to consider environmental factors in the hinterland such as landcover and disease hazard outside cities
Exploring the acceptability of engaging in physical activity amongst older adults living in socioeconomically deprived areas after the COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative study
Background: Older adults from lower socioeconomic status (SES) groups have lower physical activity levels compared to those from higher SES groups. During the COVID-19 pandemic, these disparities in physical activity persisted, or even widened in the UK and other high-income countries. This qualitative study investigated the views of older adults residing in areas of high socioeconomic deprivation, around the acceptability of engaging in physical activity in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Semi-structured interviews with 16 older adults living in areas with high levels of socioeconomic deprivation in Manchester, UK were conducted. Most participants (n = 12) were not meeting physical activity guidelines. An inductive reflexive thematic analysis was undertaken. Results: Six themes were identified which related to the acceptability of engaging in physical activity amongst this group: (1) The COVID-19 pandemic - a teachable moment for physical activity, (2) Physical activity - for purpose or pleasure?, (3) Focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t do, (4) Opportunities to be physically active (which consisted of two sub-themes: Place and Time), (5) Importance of social environment, and (6) Physical activity messaging and perceptions. Conclusions: An increased motivation to do more physical activity post-pandemic was identified amongst this population, suggesting now is a good time to act for intervention development to capitalise on this. Better messaging is needed to communicate and improve the accessibility of physical activity guidelines amongst this population. To increase engagement in leisure-time physical activity amongst this population, future interventions and messaging should emphasise fun and enjoyment
