    Cancel Culture and Symbolic Capital: Theorical Contributions from Pierre Bourdieu's Theory of the Artistic Field

    This study provides a theoretical approach to the phenomenon of cancel culture within the context of art and artists, using Pierre Bourdieu's structural-constructivist conceptual framework regarding symbolic capital, the rules of the artistic field, and some relevant agents within it. It examines how cancellation affects artists' perception of symbolic capital, whose legitimacy and recognition depend heavily on interactions with other agents in the field, and how the relationship between the public and creators can be influenced and determined by this practice. Firstly, a brief characterization of cancel culture is sought, both as a criterion for personal parameter verification and as a tool for action for marginalized groups, followed by the identification of some concepts from Bourdieu's theoretical section, such as habitus, symbolic capital, artistic field, and rules of art, in addition to the characterization the author provides of artists and creators. Furthermore, it explores how cancellation can redefine the rules and agency boundaries of participants in the artistic field, especially regarding certain moral expectations imposed on artists by those who engage in cancellation, within a field that assumes operating with relative autonomy and differing expectations from the public. Thus, the tension between moral presuppositions- by the public identifying with cancellation- attributed to major holders of symbolic capital- artists and cultural producers- and the autonomous logic governing the art field based on ethical neutrality and internal operational criteria is highlighted.Fondecy

    Tesis (Arquitecto y Magister en Arquitectura Sustentable y Energía)--Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, 2025La Cordillera de los Andes en Chile desempeña un papel fundamental en la identidad nacional, ya que no solo forma parte de nuestra historia, sino que también estructura el territorio de norte a sur. Actualmente, su imponente paisaje y el desafío de conquistar sus cumbres la han convertido la alta montana en un destino turístico de gran importancia. En este contexto, tanto las políticas públicas como las iniciativas privadas impulsan un turismo de montaña que sea saludable, seguro y, sobre todo, comprometido con el medio ambiente. Para ello, dotar la cordillera de infraestructura adecuada es fundamental, y los refugios de alta montaña se vuelven una necesidad clave.Sin embargo, esto plantea una paradoja: para fomentar un turismo sustentable, es imprescindible construir, aun cuando la industria de la construcción es una de las más contaminantes y los ecosistemas de alta montaña son extremadamente frági- les. Esta contradicción convierte la intervención en estos paisajes en un desafío complejo.Por lo tanto, la arquitectura tiene la responsabilidad de diseñar infraestructura que reduzca tanto el impacto ambiental de la construcción como su efecto en el entorno inmediato. Esta tesis busca proponer estrategias sostenibles para la construcción en lugares remotos y de alta montaña, considerando los desafíos climáticos y logísticos que estos contextos presentan.     Bibliometric analysis, systematic review of literature, and meta-analysis on the effect of amplification on voice production among teachers

    Background: Teaching is identified as a high-risk profession for developing voice disorders due tothe significant vocal demands placed on educators. This can lead to symptoms such as vocalfatigue, adversely affecting their quality of life. One common intervention is the provision of voice amplification systems, which have been reported to reduce vocal strain by enabling teachers to speak at lower volumes, thereby potentially improving voice quality and minimizing vocal fold damage. Despite these benefits, various factors such as adoption rates, technical issues, and the need for proper use and training can influence the effectiveness of these systems. This study systematically reviews the literature and conducts a meta-analysis to determine the impact of voice amplification on teachers’ vocal function. Methods: The results reported in this manuscript are based on a bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review using seven databases, selecting 20 relevant publications from an initial pool of 462, and performing a meta-analysis to compare vocal metrics with and withoutamplification. Results: The meta-analysis indicated that voice amplification systems tend to positively affect fundamental frequency, sound pressure level (SPL), and phonation time percentage; however,these effects were not statistically significant. The analysis also suggests no significant publicationbias, though the quality of the included publications varied: 15 % were rated as strong, 25 % asmoderate, and 60 % as weak.Conclusion and Recommendations: The study concludes that voice amplification systems showpotential benefits for teachers’ vocal health. However, their implementation should be part of abroader strategy that includes education, training, and regular monitoring to maximize theireffectivenes

    Global Challenges and National Responses: Indicators to Evaluate Public Policies for Mining Development in Chile in the Context of the Global Energy Transition

    The challenges of climate change require in-depth attention and targeted strategies for specific sectors, such as energy and mining. Within the mining sector, climate change imposes constraints on the sustainable extraction of minerals, thereby heightening the importance of several minerals in addressing these challenges. Chile emerges as a pivotal nation due to its substantial reserves of copper, lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite, which are essential for energy transition and decarbonization processes. Consequently, Chile must foster gradual processes to establish competitive advantages based on technological and innovative capabilities, thus projecting a competitive and sustainable mining industry. This endeavor should be accompanied by enhancements in policies and instruments to guide development, expanding local value creation. This study examines the global challenges faced by the mining sector in the context of the energy transition and evaluates Chile’s response through an assessment of public policies for mining development. It provides an analysis of the scope of various public policy instruments to establish the link between international agreements and development opportunities, subsequently proposing a series of indicators to assess policy progress. To this end, the Environmental Observatory of Mining Projects is developing indicators to evaluate compliance with these policies. In addressing the nation’s challenges related to green and sustainable mining, 20 indicators have been developed in collaboration with civil society and public and private stakeholders through a design thinking process. These indicators enable the evaluation of aspects such as air quality, water quality, and the surface area affected by tailings, among others. The initial section of the document outlines the global challenges in achieving the carbon neutrality goals set by the IPCC. The subsequent section elaborates on the theoretical framework of the research, addressing theories of economic development and sustainability, public policy approaches considered in recent years, as well as the governance of mining development, with an emphasis on its capacity to articulate industrial policies, promote environmental sustainability, and foster technological innovation. The third section details the research methodology and framework of the study. This study examines how Chile’s mining policies align with the global energy transition. Amid growing demand for critical minerals, climate change, and decarbonization, Chile faces both opportunities and socio-environmental risks. Addressing these challenges requires integrated sustainability strategies and an active state role to ensure inclusive, environmentally responsible, and innovation-driven mining development

    Biocompatibility in hemodialysis: artificial membrane and human blood interactions

    Hemodialysis, a cornerstone therapy for chronic kidney disease, represented a crucial advance in the evolution of artificial organs. While its success is largely due to its efficiency in removing uremic toxins, an equally important challenge is to uphold the primum non nocere principle by minimizing the harmful effects of membrane–blood interactions. This review examines the complex mechanisms and key interactions underlying membrane biocompatibility, including complement activation, inflammation, and coagulation disturbances, paving the way for their clinical implications. We also summarize recent innovations in membrane materials and surface engineering aimed at improving hemocompatibility and promoting safer hemodialysis treatments for improved clinical outcomes. Highlights Membrane biocompatibility is essential for safe and effective hemodialysis, while bioincompatibility can trigger complement activation, inflammation, and coagulation disorders. Synthetic membranes generally demonstrate superior hemocompatibility compared with cellulose-based membranes. Adverse immune and inflammatory responses to membrane–blood interactions may contribute to oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and immune exhaustion, impacting patient prognosis.     Importancia de las habilidades comunicativas en la formación de estudiantes de educación superior técnico profesional

    Tesis (Magíster en Educación mención Educación Superior)--Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, 2023El presente estudio analiza las percepciones de distintos actores al valor formativo del Programa de Lenguaje y Comunicación en la carrera de Ecoturismo de Duoc UC, con énfasis en su contribución al desarrollo de competencias comunicativas. A partir de un enfoque cualitativo, se aplicaron entrevistas semiestructuradas y se analizaron los datos mediante codificación temática. El análisis permitió identificar seis dimensiones analíticas: valoración de la asignatura, desarrollo de habilidades orales y escritas, aplicabilidad profesional, condiciones didácticas, tensiones curriculares e integración institucional. Los resultados evidencian una alta valoración del curso como instancia habilitadora, pero también revelan aspectos de mejora en su articulación con otras asignaturas, su progresión curricular y su sostenibilidad en el tiempo. Esta investigación aporta evidencia que puede orientar mejoras en el rediseño curricular y contribuir al campo de estudio de la Educación Superior Técnico Profesional

All rights reserved.The increase of informal settlements in Chile, along with the identification of over 399 settlements located in risk zones, depicts a concerning picture and emphasizes the importance of understanding the situation of resident groups more thoroughly. Considering this context, I argue that individuals living in informal settlements not only confront hazards related to their geographical location but also small-scale hazards, which I have explored through the concept of 'everyday hazards'. This article examines the nature of the everyday hazards and their impact on the experience of women living in informal settlements in the city of Copiapó (northern Chile). The methodology employed was qualitative, primarily using life-history interviews. The findings highlight that the participants called and identified everyday hazards as ‘dangers.’ The 'everyday hazards' could be classified as natural hazards, anthropogenic hazards, health hazards, and ‘difficult moments’, and are closely tied to their socio-material living conditions.Chilean National Agency for Research and DevelopmentChilean National Agency for Research and Developmen

    Tesis (Magíster en Educación, con Mención en Evaluación de Aprendizajes)--Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, 2025Este Trabajo Final de Egreso tiene como objetivo promover la autoeficacia académica en estudiantes de un liceo femenino científico-humanista en Santiago, mediante la implementación de autoevaluaciones formativas en clases de química y física como herramienta de retroalimentación efectiva. La problemática se fundamenta en la baja representación de mujeres en carreras STEM, asociada a la falta de confianza en estas disciplinas vistas como dominios masculinos y a prácticas evaluativas centradas en lo sumativo. Desde un enfoque de aprendizaje situado, se diseñó e implementó una intervención que alfabetizó a un docente de cada asignatura en el uso de autoevaluaciones formativas y se aplicó esta estrategia en cinco clases, promoviendo la reflexión, la planificación y la autorregulación del aprendizaje. Los resultados evidenciaron mejoras moderadas en la percepción de autoeficacia de las estudiantes, con aumentos en el interés profesional por la ciencia y en la percepción de capacidad, así como cambios en las concepciones docentes sobre la retroalimentación, destacando su valor para visibilizar aprendizajes y planificar mejoras. El análisis cualitativo mostró un mayor énfasis en factores afectivos y motivacionales tras la intervención. En conjunto, la propuesta demostró ser una alternativa viable para fortalecer la confianza académica de las estudiantes, apoyar el aprendizaje autorregulado y contribuir a la disminución de la brecha de género en áreas STEM. Además, entrega herramientas concretas para innovar en prácticas evaluativas, alineadas con un enfoque formativo y sostenible que potencia el rol activo de las estudiantes en el proceso de aprendizaje

    Experimental assessment of reinforced concrete squat walls with high-strength lightweight concrete

    This study experimentally evaluates the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete squat walls constructed with high-strength lightweight concrete using expanded clay as lightweight aggregate. Four specimens with identical geometry and reinforcement were tested under monotonic and cyclic loading to assess shear capacity, stiffness degradation, and energy dissipation. Results indicate that the lightweight concrete walls tested exhibited comparable shear strength and cyclic performance to normal-weight concrete walls, despite a 40% lower initial stiffness, but also demonstrated superior behavior compared to other lightweight concrete walls documented in literature with similar characteristics. The experimental shear strength exceeded the nominal capacity predicted by the ACI 318 code, suggesting that the code’s lightweight reduction factor may be overly conservative for high-strength lightweight concrete mixtures. Notably, the results demonstrate the influence of aggregate type on concrete mix in shear response. The study contributes to understanding the nonlinear performance of lightweight concrete walls under lateral loads, providing experimental data that could refine design methodologies for such structures in seismic-prone regions
