The CHIMERA Survey: The first CO detection in Leo T, the lowest mass known galaxy still hosting cold molecular gas
We report the first CO detection in Leo T, representing the most extreme observation of carbon monoxide molecules in the lowest stellar mass gas-rich dwarf galaxy (M⋆ ∼ 105 M⊙) known to date. We acquired and present new Atacama Compact Array (ACA) 12CO(J = 1–0) data within our CHIMERA Survey project for the central region of Leo T, a metal-poor ([M/H] ∼ ‑1.7) dwarf in the Milky Way (MW) outskirts. We identified three compact molecular clouds (< 13 pc) with estimated upper limit virial masses of Mmol ∼ 5 × 103 M⊙ each and a total of 1.4 ± 0.4 × 104 M⊙, corresponding to ∼3% of the total gas mass. We obtained CO-to-H2 conversion factors (αCO) as high as ∼ 155 M⊙(K km s‑1 pc2)‑1 and mean molecular gas surface densities of Σmol ∼ 9 M⊙ pc‑2 that are consistent with values found in dwarf galaxies with extremely low metal content. All CO clouds are shifted (∼60 pc) from the stellar population centers, and only one cloud appears within the densest HI region. Two clouds have velocity offsets with the HI of Δvlos ∼ + 13 km s‑1 being within twice the velocity dispersion (Δvlos/σHI, los ∼ 2) and probably bound. However, the northern cloud is faster (Δvlos ∼ + 57 km s‑1); our models with low halo masses (Mh ≲ 109 M⊙) result in unbound orbits, suggesting that this material is likely being expelled from the dwarf, providing evidence for molecular gas depletion. These properties reveal a perturbed dynamics intertwined with star formation processes in low-mass dwarf galaxies, supporting a scenario of episodic bursts until they are fully quenched by the MW environment...
Ecology and Humor: Two Decades of the Episode “La ruta de la caca”, the First Green Note by Juan Carlos Bodoque on the TV Program 31 Minutos
A new procedure to derive typological fragility functions for unreinforced masonry structures: an application to a Chilean case
The assessment of the seismic fragility of unreinforced Masonry (URM) buildings in cities, using advanced numerical approaches, is hampered by the complex connectivity which develops with the diachronic process of urban growth and regeneration. The building stock forming 43 urban aggregates in the historic neighborhood of Yungay in Santiago, Chile, is the focus of this manuscript. The Failure Mechanism Identification and Vulnerability Evaluation method (FaMIVE), a mechanical approach based on limit-state analysis and failure modes, determines the collapse load factors and derive capacity curves for each of the 423 structures surveyed and analyzed. The objective of the study is to correlate specific sets of architectural features of these buildings to their seismic performance as represented through fragility functions. To this end we have introduced a new selection algorithm to automatically group the buildings using an optimal logic tree analysis (LTA). As a result, we obtain clusters of capacity curves using the observable properties of the façades as the decision variables of the LTA, while minimizing the variability of the parameters which define the capacity curves. The median capacity curve of each cluster is then used to derive Analytical Fragility Functions (AFFs), using a capacity-demand approach, which considers different sets of nonlinear spectra. The structure of the LTA is observed to be adequately preserved for fragility functions, fully justifying the subdivision in clusters. The aim of this work is to provide the data to prioritize mitigation strategies that enables us to preserve this heritage, as well as that of other similar historical urban areas in Chile and Latin American cities, which bear a strong architectural resemblance since their foundatio
Reinforced Concrete with Graphene Oxide: Techno-Economic Feasibility for Reduced Cement Usage and CO2 Emissions
Concrete, a key material in modern infrastructure, significantly contributes to global CO2 emissions, urging innovative approaches for its environmental impact mitigation. This study evaluates the techno-economic feasibility of incorporating graphene oxide (GO) into concrete formulations to enhance mechanical properties and reduce cement usage, thereby mitigating CO2 emissions. The methodology involved synthesising GO using a modified Hummers’ method, ensuring uniform dispersion in concrete matrices. Concrete samples with varying GO contents underwent mechanical strength testing, as well as microstructural analysis including SEM, XPS, and Raman spectroscopy. Results led to simulations of the mechanical response of low- and medium-rise buildings subjected to seismic forces. Besides, economic assessments were performed by considering the overall cost of materials (GO and concrete) and the savings from CO2 emissions, based on different scenarios for both GO and CO2 prices. The optimal formulation uses 0.1% GO by weight of cement, improving compressive strength by up to 17.92% and flexural strength by up to 74.78%. Structural models indicate that GO can reduce the weight of structural elements by 8–24%, leading to lower seismic forces and easier compliance with seismic-resistant standards. Economic analysis reveals that low-rise buildings can benefit from GO-enhanced concrete if the GO price is between €50 and €80 per kg, depending on CO2 credit prices ranging from €60 to €200 per tonne. For taller buildings, the economic feasibility is more restrictive; GO prices must be between €50 and €70 per kg with CO2 credit prices starting at €100 per tonne to justify the use of 0.1% GO
Art, Value, and Connections: A Socio-Semantic Network Analysis of the Contemporary Art Market.
Tesis (Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Sociology)--Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, 2025This study offers a relational approach to contemporary art production by modeling the socio-semantic network linking early-career artists to aesthetic content. Using data from Chile’s National Collection of Contemporary Artists (NCCA), it combines Structural Topic Modeling (STM) and Exponential Random Graph Modeling (ERGM) to analyze how symbolic and social structures co-evolve. Results indicate that institutional visibility is unevenly distributed across aesthetic content, with higher visibility content more likely to receive selective institutional support and favorable aesthetic evaluations. In contrast, content with broader artist engagement tends to align with more traditional formats and receives comparatively lower institutional recognition. Additionally, the ERGM analysis reveals that affiliations between artists and aesthetic themes are not random but shaped by structural mechanisms of symbolic alignment and social homophily. Factors such as gender, educational background, and sponsorship type significantly influence the likelihood of artists engaging with particular content. This approach thus contributes to the study of cultural production by explaining how artistic meaning, legitimacy, and access are co-constructed within a stratified symbolic space.2030-07-2
