Study of null geodesics and their stability in Horndeski black holes
We study the motion of particles in the background of a scalar–tensor theory of gravity in which the scalar field is kinetically coupled to the Einstein tensor, and we present the null geodesic structure for asymptotically flat, AdS, and dS Horndeski black holes, studying the effect of the cosmological constant on the orbits. Also, we consider three classical tests of gravity in the solar system, namely the bending of the light, the gravitational redshift, and the Shapiro time delay, in order to constraint the coupling parameters of the scalar field to gravity. Calculating the Lyapunov exponent, we explore the stability of these geodesics for various values of the cosmological constant
All rights reserved. The study addresses the notion of “desire”—synthesized by Augustine in Confessions 1,1—not in itself, but as rethought by Edith Stein, a powerful thinker and profound expert on Augustinian thought. Although she frequently quotes Augustine in her work Endliches und Ewiges Sein, she does not directly address the notion of “desire” of the Bishop of Hippo, but her analyses nervertheless support the Augustinian basis of this human phenomenon and the undisputed relevance of Augustine today.Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo-ANIDConcrete Innovation Hub UCFONDECYTFONDECY
The new dwellers of southern cities: Social diversification and uncertainty in Santiago inner city
© Urban Studies Journal Limited 2025.Who the new dwellers of the fast-changing inner cities in the Global South are has been largely overlooked in the literature. The political economy underpinning inner-city change, particularly the rent-gap mechanism, has been the predominant lens for analysing these processes. That is the case of the Santiago inner area, Chile, where a densification process tallying more than 600 dense high-rises has been widely studied. However, the question of who actually inhabits these towers remains unanswered. This article underscores the need to have a deeper understanding of the new urban residents in Latin America due to the profound changes in the social fabric, including the emergence of the ‘vulnerable-to-poverty’ class and the strong wave of intra-regional migration, which directly affects housing needs and preferences. To address this gap, I combine survey data from 1406 high-rise residents and in-depth interviews with building administrators to test the following hypothesis: the new high-rises are the residences of those who, despite overcoming poverty, still struggle to settle. To test this hypothesis, I characterise the high-rise residents according to their social class, level of economic insecurity and intergenerational social mobility. The results show a process of social diversification of Santiago’s inner-city residents. These buildings host residents who follow crossed-life trajectories. While some have moved up the social ladder, others have moved down, accessing these residential buildings via formal and informal strategies. And yet, regardless of this disparity in life trajectories, the unifying element of these new residents is their pervasive experience of economic insecurity.National Agency for Research and DevelopmentANI
Modeling the Multiaxial Behavior of High Damping Rubber Bearings (HDRBs)
The dynamic behavior of seismically isolated structures is governed by the force-deformation response of the isolation devices.Consequently, significant efforts have been made to accurately simulate the behavior of different types of devices. High dampingrubber bearings (HDRBs) are among the most widely manufactured and used isolators in practice. Given the internal structureof these devices and the characteristic behavior of the rubber compound, HDRBs show highly nonlinear behavior with strongcoupling between deformation directions, which is challenging to simulate numerically. Capturing these complex multiaxialinteractions is essential for reliably predicting device behavior and ensuring the dynamic stability of the isolation system duringseismic events, therefore, a holistic multiaxial modeling approach is critical. This study presents a robust and sufficiently accuratenumerical model for simulating the multiaxial behavior of HDRBs under large deformations. This elaborate model includes:bidirectional shear response that accounts for stiffness degradation with load-direction dependency, including scragging (long-term degradation) and Mullins effect (short-term degradation), and temporary hardening; coupling between axial and shearresponse, including axial stiffness softening due to lateral displacement and shear stiffness variability due to axial load variation;axial instability due to large compressive loads; and cavitation under tensile forces. The proposed model is validated usinga wide range of load patterns applied to an HDRB, as well as experimental results from the literature. The proposed modeldemonstrates good agreement with experimental data, accurately simulating HDRB responses across diverse validation tests, including double bidirectional shear tests in rotated directions, cyclic shear response under different axial loads, tensile loads, bidirectional deformation history with an elliptical orbit, extremely large deformations (beyond the design limits), and dynamicanalyses. The results show that the model provides reliable predictions of the static and dynamic behavior of HDRBs underdifferent load patterns, including deformations until the onset of failure. The proposed model has been implemented in OpenSeesand is openly available at the supplementary repository https://github.com/JAGallardo1992/HDRB_mode
Understanding the structure and functionality of third-generation rice flour snacks enriched with grape pomace flour
Extrusion can yield expanded products or non-expanded pellets, which are later expanded in a separate thermal device to form third-generation (3 G) snacks. In both processes, ingredient effects on structure formation and functional ingredient retention are challenging. This study analyzed the effect of adding 0-15 % grape pomace flour (GPF), a by-product of the wine industry, to rice flour pellets extruded at maximum temperatures of 110 and 150 degrees C using twin-screw extrusion and then microwave-expanded (30 s at 480 W), to understand the relationship between microstructural parameters of 3 G snacks and their physical and textural properties, total polyphenol content (TPC), and antioxidant capacity. Results showed that adding GPF increased bulk density (from 0.12 to 0.39 g/cm3), hardness (from 29.5 to 37.59 N), and crispness, while decreasing the expansion index (from 1.83 to 1.65). Micro-CT analysis revealed that extrusion temperature did not affect microstructural parameters, but high GPF levels (15 %) reduced porosity and mean pore size, and increased wall thickness. Extrusion reduced the initial TPC in pellets by up to 52 %, but microwave expansion increased it by up to 37 %, likely due to polyphenol release from the dense glassy matrix of the pellets. These findings highlight the potential for creating nutritionally enhanced 3 G snacks using agricultural by-products like GPF and underscore the importance of a microstructural approach in the analysis.FONDECY

© Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2025.Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the significance of mathematical modelling in decision-making and the limited capacity in many low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Thus, we studied how modelling supported policy decision-making processes in LMICs during the pandemic (details in a separate paper). We found that strong researcher-policymaker relationships and co-creation facilitated knowledge translation, while scepticism, political pressures and demand for quick outputs were barriers. We also noted that routine use of modelled evidence for decision-making requires sustained funding, capacity building for policy-facing modelling, robust data infrastructure and dedicated knowledge translation mechanisms. These lessons helped us co-create a framework and policy roadmap for improving the routine use of modelling evidence in public health decision-making. This communication paper describes the framework components and provides an implementation approach and evidence for the recommendations. The components include (1) funding, (2) capacity building, (3) data infrastructure, (4) knowledge translation platforms and (5) a culture of evidence use. Key arguments Our framework integrates the supply (modellers) and demand (policymakers) sides and contextual factors that enable change. It is designed to be generic and disease-agnostic for any policy decision-making that modelling could support. It is not a decision-making tool but a guiding framework to help build capacity for evidence-based policy decision-making. The target audience is modellers and policymakers, but it could include other partners and implementers in public health decision-making. Conclusion The framework was created through engagements with policymakers and researchers and reflects their real-life experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its purpose is to guide stakeholders, especially in lower-resourced settings, in building modelling capacity, prioritising efforts and creating an enabling environment for using models as part of the evidence base to inform public health decision-making. To validate its robustness and impact, further work is needed to implement and evaluate this framework in diverse settings.ANID Fondecyt Iniciacio
