Sentinel Hydrological Processes: Informing Drought Management Strategies in Chile

    No full text
This chapter explores the role of hydrological processes as sentinel indicators of climate change, emphasizing the time of appearance of anomalies in fog, groundwater, and vegetation dynamics in Mediterranean and semi-arid regions of Chile. By analyzing case studies on the spatial-temporal variability of fog, groundwater storage, and primary productivity, we explore how these variables signal changes in the hydrological cycle under increasing climatic stress. Groundwater availability and fog frequency offer crucial insights into water resource dynamics, while changes in phenology reveal vegetation responses to prolonged drought and heat waves. The findings of these original studies contribute to improving drought management strategies and highlight the importance of early detection of hydrological anomalies and ecosystem resilience in regions highly vulnerable to climate variability

On the applicability of ultrasound flow visualization for the study of erosive wear by solid particles projected from turbulent slurry

    No full text
The study of erosion caused by turbulent flow of slurries is crucial for designing and operating the flow handling systems, predicting their reliability and useful life. This research explores the capacity of ultrasound particle image velocimetry (UPIV) for determining the impact parameters of solid particles projected from turbulent slurry onto a target surface. A slurry pot configuration was employed, and it was equipped with two linear transducers observing the flow at radial and axial planes. Three levels of rotational velocity were tested corresponding to the linear velocity of the moving target of 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5 m/s. For validation, the velocities and angles of individual particle impacts measured by UPIV were analyzed comparatively with analogous information derived by inverse analysis of effective wear scars using two deformation models. Velocity components measured by the two methods are statistically consistent for the two observation planes. The UPIV is concluded to present a new tool for the study of erosive wear with a focus on the slurry-target interface

Green Hydrogen Cogeneration Through Solid-Particle Concentrated Solar Power System Integrated With Proton Exchange Membrane Stacks

    No full text
This paper presents a techno-economic analysis of third-generation (Gen3) Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) systems using solid particles and Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) stacks for green hydrogen production. The study assesses the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH2) as a key metric. A 100 MWe CSP plant can achieve a LCOE of 55-60 /MWh,withaSolarMultiple(SM)of3andThermalEnergyStorage(TES)capacitybetween7hand16h.Resultsshowthata1:1ratiobetweenPEMandCSPcapacitiesisnotneededtooptimizehydrogenproduction,enablinghybridschemesforelectricityandhydrogencogeneration.However,theachievedLCOH2doesnotmeetIEAs2030targetofbelow4/MWh, with a Solar Multiple (SM) of 3 and Thermal Energy Storage (TES) capacity between 7 h and 16 h. Results show that a 1:1 ratio between PEM and CSP capacities is not needed to optimize hydrogen production, enabling hybrid schemes for electricity and hydrogen co-generation. However, the achieved LCOH2 does not meet IEA’s 2030 target of below 4 /kg-H2. Key challenges include reducing PEM costs for large-scale applications and ensuring a cost of electricity below 55 $/MWh. Addressing these issues will be crucial for the economic viability of Gen3 CSP+PEM systems in the transition to sustainable hydrogen production

Reconstruction Techniques for Accelerating Dynamic Cardiac MRI

    No full text
Achieving sufficient spatial and temporal resolution for dynamic applications in cardiac MRI is a challenging task due to the inherently slow nature of MR imaging. In order to accelerate scans and allow improved resolution, much research over the past three decades has been aimed at developing innovative reconstruction methods that can yield high-quality images from reduced amounts of k-space data. In this review, we describe the evolution of these reconstruction techniques, with a particular focus on those advances that have shifted the dynamic reconstruction paradigm as it relates to cardiac MRI. This review discusses and explains the fundamental ideas behind the success of modern reconstruction algorithms, including parallel imaging, spatio-temporal redundancies, compressed sensing, low-rank methods and machine learning

Lideró un equipo multidisciplinario bajo enfoques RUP y Scrum, definiendo objetivos, identificando procesos "As-Is" y "To-Be", y gestionando actividades y flujos.

Associations of number and position of tooth loss and quality of life in the Chilean population: a cross-sectional study

    No full text
Background Multiple studies have demonstrated the association between Quality of Life (QoL) and the prevalence of caries, periodontitis, and tooth loss. However, the role of the position and location of tooth loss in impacting QoL remains unclear. Aim To evaluate the association of tooth loss, including anterior losses, with Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) in Chileans aged 15 years and older who participated in the ENS 2016–2017. Methods In this cross-sectional study we included 5473 individuals enrolled in the last Chilean National Health Survey (ENS 2016–2017). HRQoL was measured using the EQ-5D questionnaire, while OHRQoL was assessed through a general question (GQ/ENS) and five specific questions (SQ/ENS). An analysis of variance test was performed to determine how difference or variation in the number(s) of teeth affected their HRQoL. Odds ratios with corresponding 95% confidence intervals were calculated using multinomial logistic regression to determine how and to what degree anterior tooth loss was associated both with HRQOL and OHRQOL in the study sample. Results The number of remaining teeth was significantly higher in the ‘No problems’ group across all EQ-5D dimensions, except Anxiety/Depression. The largest difference was in Self-care, where ‘No problems’ had a mean of 20.18 compared to 6.43 teeth in the ‘Problematic’ group. Anxiety/Depression showed higher odds of ‘Some problems’ with upper anterior tooth loss, while ‘Usual Activities’ showed higher odds of ‘problematic’ with lower anterior tooth loss. Participants with an ‘Excellent’ OHRQoL perception had a mean of 24.32 teeth. Also, upper and lower anterior tooth loss increased the odds of OHRQoL self-perception. Conclusions Tooth loss was associated with lower HRQoL and OHRQoL in some groups, with more remaining teeth associated with better outcomes, while anterior tooth loss was- linked to worse self-perceived oral health

    No full text
Abstract Globalization and the advancement of information and communication technologies have transformed urban areas, highlighting the emergence of home delivery applications. These applications offer conveniences and job opportunities but also pose challenges such as job insecurity, traffic congestion, and exclusion of marginalized communities. In response to these dynamics, a research methodology based on design is proposed, emphasizing the integration between theory and practice. The research highlights the value of the prototype as a generative and learning tool, demonstrating the feasibility of collecting data through the active participation of citizens. This methodological approach is applied to explore the impact of home delivery applications in urban areas, identifying complexities and emerging dynamics. It focuses especially on the Metropolitan Region, thus contributing to the discipline of urban studies through research through design. This research underscores the importance of considering equity in the city in the context of the collaborative economy and digitalization. Thus, through the prototype of ethnographic instruments, it has been demonstrated that it is feasible to collect data through the active participation of citizensAgencia Nacional de Investigacion y Desarrollo, in Chil

Public transport: Status and research priorities for Latin America and the Caribbean

    No full text
Public transport is essential in advancing sustainable, equitable, and safe mobility. It is the primary transportation mode in Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) cities, but it is facing a fast decline in favor of individual motorized modes, especially motorcycles. Improving public transport in LAC cities requires understanding local conditions, such as demographic changes, increase in older population, higher incomes, urban sprawl, environmental deterioration, and prevalent social exclusion. To identify research priorities, we reviewed selected academic papers published in the last ten years in the region and completed a consultation among transport researchers in LAC. The review indicates that researchers in the LAC region have concentrated on researching public transport reforms, on social aspects, like accessibility, equity, and inclusion, on demand, behavior, and user perceptions of public transport, on emissions, externalities, and new technologies. This review suggests that multiple aspects require further analysis to improve quality of public transport services and reduce social, environmental, and financial impacts. We complemented this review with consultation with academics participating in the regional transport research conference PANAM STR. Participants identified key research topics and their priorities. Topics include, in order of importance: valuation of externalities; operating business models; safety; new methods for collecting information in cities lacking data; governance in public transport systems; last mile connectivity; electro-mobility; modal integration, reallocation of road space for sustainable mobility modes; inclusion of informal services; and improving labor conditions for transportation workers. A subjective valuation of the opportunity for these topics (short, medium, long term) and the impact of de-carbonization was provided

    No full text
