    Reconstruction and identification of pairs of collimated τ-leptons decaying hadronically using √s = 13 TeV ppcollision data with the ATLAS detector

    This paper describes an algorithm for reconstructing and identifying a highly collimated hadronically decaying τ -lepton pair with low transverse momentum. When two τ -leptons are highly collimated, their visible decay products might overlap, degrading the reconstruction performance for each of the τ -leptons. A dedicated treatment attempting to tag the τ -lepton pair as a single object is required. The reconstruction algorithm is based on a large radius jet and its associated two leading subjets, and the identification uses a boosted decision tree to discriminate between signatures from τ + τ - systems and those arising from QCD jets. The efficiency of the identification algorithm is measured in Z γ events using proton–proton collision data at s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb - 1 . The resulting data-to-simulation scale factors are close to unity with uncertainties ranging from 26 to 37%

    Newborn screening for primary congenital hypothyroidism: past, present and future

    This manuscript reviews the evolution of newborn screening for primary congenital hypothyroidism (CH) and explores future strategies to enhance diagnostic accuracy. Over the past few decades, newborn screening has expanded globally, significantly reducing the incidence of severe forms of the disease. However, challenges persist, especially regarding the overdiagnosis of mild cases of primary CH, which may not require treatment. Omic sciences may help researchers to enhance the understanding of primary CH and to uncover new biomarkers to identify mild cases with altered proteomic and/or metabolic profiles associated with the need for treatment. Record-linkage studies can help deepen knowledge on the long-term outcomes of affected children identified through newborn screening. Nevertheless, despite 50 years of newborn screening for primary CH, a minority of newborns currently benefit from this critically important public health intervention. Efforts should be done to expand access to newborn screening globally, especially for those born in developing countries

    Structural control on the Southern Andean Nevados de Chillán Geothermal System

    Detailed structural analysis from representative outcrops is necessary to characterize geothermal reservoir dynamics. Here, we estimate fracture density and intensity, as well as the dimensional properties of individual fault and fracture sets in basement rocks of the Nevados de Chillán Geothermal System. We identified several important structural features that could be responsible for controlling local fluid flow; the high-angle sinistral Las Trancas Fault as well as a series of low-angle reverse faults within the Las Termas-Olla de Mote Fault system. Most fractures identified strike either NE-SW, NNE-SSW, and NNW-SSE. Analysis of fault-slip data, supported by seismicity, indicates the presence of a main transtensional regime with subhorizontal NE-trending σ1. Structures sub-parallel to the present-day local maximum horizontal stress show significant dilation tendencies, whilst NW-SE fractures are less prone to dilation. NE and E-W high angle faults could be primary conduits facilitating the upward migration of hot fluids from reservoirs within crystalline and fractured rocks. The fracture length distribution was analysed using power law, negative exponential, and log-normal distribution. The power law with a scaling exponent of about −3 provides the best fit to the data.     Este reporte del Observatorio de Políticas Públicas de SECOS analiza el trabajo legislativo relevante para la pesca artesanal, acuicultura y desarrollo costero en la legislatura 372. Se ingresaron 19 proyectos de ley, destacando la reforma a la Ley de Pesca (boletín 17095-21), normativas sobre buceo y transferencia tecnológica. Se votaron 11 proyectos y se promulgaron 3 leyes, incluyendo avances en equidad de género. Con más de 75 sesiones y 774 invitados en la Comisión de Pesca, se confirma la magnitud del debate sobre la nueva Ley de Pesca. La diversidad de temas tratados en los proyectos aprobados resalta la importancia del seguimiento legislativo y la participación informada en estos procesos.ANID –Programa Iniciativa Científica Milenio – ICN2019_01

    The Construction of a Segregated Metropolis: Urban Segregation and Natural Preexistences in the Metropolitan Area of Concepción

    Urban segregation has been the center of discussion in various theories of urban sociology (Ruiz-Tagle, 2016), gaining great importance in recent years. The problem has been mainly addressed from residential location and socioeconomic stratification, although there are other factors that can complement its understanding and representation. Among them, the level of Segregation according to socioeconomic level and its representation in Space (Trufello et al., North Grande Geography Journal 160:81–131, 2022) play a key role in the construction of an area in the process of metropolitanization. This article seeks to observe the way in which Segregation has been constructed and evolved in the Metropolitan Area of Concepción (AMC) from its representation in Space. Using a quantitative methodology, first, homogeneous areas are constructed regarding territorial segregation attributes in the AMC from the geolocation of an entropy index and socioeconomic variables. Second, typologies of urban environments are constructed considering the natural preexistences in the territory. These data are processed through spatial statistics from the regionalization method and its cartographic representation. The results contribute to understanding socio-spatial segregation from its representation in space at the metropolitan level. With this, it is expected to minimize the error of representative samples for the generation of the surveys that will be carried out after this study and for the selection of metropolitan-level case studies.CEDEUS (Chile); ANID/FONDAP Project No. 1523A0004; ANID 2020 National Doctorate No. 2120216

    Psychosocial and vulnerability factors affecting well-being of migrant mothers from Latin America: A scoping review

    This scoping review examines the experiences of migrant mothers from Latin America, highlighting psychosocial and vulnerability factors affecting their well-being in migration contexts. Focusing on south-to-south migration and the gendered experiences of caregiving women, it addresses a significant gap in the literature. Findings reveal unique challenges such as acculturation stress, economic hardships, limited social support, and mental health issues exacerbated by marginalization due to caregiving roles. Practice implications for social work and policy include culturally competent interventions and the design of supportive policies tailored to migrant mothers’ needs

    Streaming Enumeration on Nested Documents

    Some of the most relevant document schemas used online, such as XML and JSON, have a nested format. In the past decade, the task of extracting data from nested documents over streams has become especially relevant. We focus on the streaming evaluation of queries with outputs of varied sizes over nested documents. We model queries of this kind as Visibly Pushdown Annotators (VPAnn), a computational model that extends visibly pushdown automata with outputs and has the same expressive power as monadic second-order logic over nested documents. Since processing a document through a VPAnn can generate a massive number of results, we are interested in reading the input in a streaming fashion and enumerating the outputs one after another as efficiently as possible, namely, with constant delay. This article presents an algorithm that enumerates these elements with constant delay after processing the document stream in a single pass. Furthermore, we show that this algorithm is worst-case optimal in terms of update-time per symbol and memory usage

    Experimental and Numerical Assessment of the In-Plane Behaviour of PG-RM Walls with Openings

    This paper investigates how openings affect the in-plane response of partially grouted masonry (PG-RM) walls. The effect of the openings was assessed regarding shear capacity and failure mode through the cyclic test of four façadetype walls constructed with different opening sizes and with and without asymmetry. The results show that the shear capacity decreases with the opening’s height or width increment. It is also observed that geometric asymmetry generates differences between the lateral resistances of both in-plane loading directions. In addition, a two-dimensional finite element macro model using Abaqus was validated against the experimental results. The numerical strategy implemented satisfactorily represented the shear strength and failure mode of the tested walls.
