Including problem-knowledge based modification into a Differential Evolution Algorithm for optimizing planar moment-resisting steel frames
The Differential Evolution Algorithm (DEA) has been demonstrated to be capable of effectively addressing engineering challenges, although its performance varies considerably when applied to different problems. Customizing the algorithm to the specific characteristics of a given problem has been identified as a valid strategy to enhance its effectiveness and reliability. In this study, a tailored version of the DEA is proposed for the optimization of planar Moment-Resisting Steel Frames (MRSFs) subjected to static loads. A diverse set of heuristics and techniques were incorporated, including advanced strategies for parameter control, initialization, mutation operators, crossover operators, diversity conservation, constraints handling, and dynamic population management. To evaluate the performance of the proposed heuristics and techniques, 7800 DEA configurations were applied to the optimization of seven representative MRSFs. Results indicate that through problem-specific modifications the DEA is highly likely to identify the optimal solutions. By emphasizing both computational efficiency and solution quality, this research provides valuable insights into enhanced applicability of the DEA to structural optimization problems. It is shown that a customized algorithm is a reliable, effective, and robust tool to optimize MRSFs.Research Center for Integrated Disaster Risk ManagementANIDPontificia Universidad Catolica de ChileANID FONDA
Prevalence of anxiety disorders in Latin America: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Background The prevalence of anxiety disorders among the adult population in Latin America (LATAM) and its association with development indicators is insufficiently characterised. We estimated pooled regional, country, and sex-specific prevalence rates of anxiety disorders in LATAM based on International Classification of Diseases (ICD) or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) criteria. Additionally, we examined the association between its prevalence and four country-level development indicators: Human Development Index (HDI), income inequality (Gini coefficient), Gender Inequality Index (GII), and Intentional Homicide Rate (IHR). Methods We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based studies on the prevalence of ICD/ DSM anxiety disorders in LATAM from 1990 to 2024, irrespective of language. We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, SciELO, LILACS, and grey literature. Study quality was assessed using JBI's critical appraisal tools. Pooled estimates were generated using random-effects meta-analysis, and heterogeneity was evaluated using the I-squared (I2) statistic. Meta-regression analyses were performed to examine the ecological association between anxiety disorders prevalence and four development indicators. The study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020190238). Findings Using data from 36 studies in LATAM, we calculated the lifetime, 12-month, and current prevalence of ICD/ DSM anxiety disorders at 14.55% (95% Confidence Interval 12.32%-17.11%; I2 = 97.9%); 6.61% (5.20-8.37; I2 = 98.1%), and 3.27% (2.34-4.56; I2 = 97.5%), respectively. Heterogeneity was high across prevalence periods, sexes, and countries (all I2 >= 91.4%), warranting caution in interpreting pooled estimates. Elevated 12-month and current prevalence rates of anxiety disorders were associated with higher Gini coefficients (p <= 0.0013). Additionally, higher current prevalence was associated with lower HDI (p = 0.0103) and higher GII (p = 0.0023), while elevated 12-month prevalence was associated with higher IHR (p = 0.011). Interpretation This study shows that approximately one in seven people in LATAM experience anxiety disorders at some point in their lives. These findings highlight the need to strengthen mental health systems in the region, and evidence the association between prevalence of anxiety disorders and development indicators. Our results can serve as a baseline for tracking anxiety disorders and for informed decision-making at the national and regional levels. The substantial heterogeneity between studies and the underrepresentation of some countries underscore the imperative for enhancing regional mental health capacities.Pfizer Independent Medical Educatio

Precision or adaptability? Contrasting effects of linear and non-linear pedagogy models in handball instruction
Introduction: Research in physical education increasingly compares linear and non-linear teaching for invasion games. The present study examined how these frameworks affect technical execution and game-based decision-making in handball. Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest study (5 weeks) assigned students to a Linear model (progressive, repetitive practice) or to Non-Linear Pedagogy (ecological dynamics, task representativeness). Technical skills were measured with the Zinn Handball Skills Battery and the Johanson Ability Test; tactical performance with the Game Performance Assessment Instrument in representative scenarios. Inter-rater reliability was established among independent observers. Results: Both groups improved technical execution from pre- to post-test. The Linear group showed greater gains in precision-based tasks (passing, shooting), whereas the Non-Linear group improved more in tactical dimensions (decision-making, off-the-ball support). ANOVA indicated significant main effects of time but no group × time interaction; intra- and inter-group contrasts revealed differentiated developmental patterns. Discussion: Findings suggest complementary strengths: linear instruction favors technical refinement, whereas non-linear approaches promote adaptability, perception–action coupling, and context-sensitive responses. Conclusion: Educators should adopt flexible, learner-centred programming integrating both models to align with learners' developmental need

Formamidinium–Cesium Lead Iodide Self-Doped Perovskite Films Characterized by Photoelectron Spectroscopies
We demonstrated intrinsic compositional self-doping in FA1–xCsxPbI3 perovskite films prepared by thermal co-evaporation under high vacuum. By systematically varying the (FAI + CsI)/PbI2 precursor ratio while keeping the FA/Cs ratio fixed, we induced a gradual Fermi level shift from n- to p-type, as confirmed by UPS/IPES. This doping control is achieved without external dopants or postdeposition treatments. A cesium content of x ≈ 0.20 enables room-temperature stabilization of the photoactive α-phase without annealing. These results provide a scalable, annealing-free route to engineer electronic properties in vacuum-deposited perovskites, offering a foundation for simplified device architectures such as homojunctions
Integration of electrochemical decarbonation of limestones into an innovative chain for low carbon foot print cement production
Tesis (Doctor in Engineering Sciences)--Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, 2025Concrete is the most widely used human-made material, but its use faces pressing challenges related to reducing CO2 emissions. These emissions are primarily associated with the cement production processes, which involve the calcination of calcium carbonate (CaCO3)-rich limeston esto produce quicklime (CaO), hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2), and clinker —the main active compound in Portland cement (PC). Due to the growing demand for concrete and, consequently, cement, the cement industry increasingly relies on disruptive technologies to meet CO2 stabilization targets for2050, which are essential for contributing to less severe global warming scenarios. Recently, an electrochemical process based on water electrolysis has been proposed as a disruptive technology with potential for the deep decarbonization of lime and cement production. In this process, introducing solid CaCO3 into an electrolysis cell triggers a decarbonation reaction in anaqueous medium at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, releasing H2, and a mixture of O2 and CO2. Calcium precipitates as solid Ca(OH)2 and is recovered from the electrolysis cell by filtration. This precipitated material (PM) has the potential to be used as a non-carbonate feedstock for lime and cement production (Ca(OH)2 Heat→ CaO + H2O), addressing the chemical emissions produced by limestone calcination (CaCO3 Heat→ CaO + CO2). For a future deployment of this technology in the cement industry, it is essential to understand the implications of electrochemical decarbonation (ED) in the manufacturing process and the final product's performance. Accordingly, this research focused on the integration of the ED into an innovative chain for low-carbon footprint cement production, advancing the understanding of the fundamentals of the electrochemical process, and investigating the effects of substituting natural limestone with its corresponding PM on the entire production chain and the properties of the resulting cement. The physical and chemical properties of limestones from cement plants were of interest in explaining the quality of the PM. For this purpose, different-grade limestones were decarbonated using an H-type cell, demonstrating that ED is possible on natural limestones of different CaCO3 purities. In all cases, the PM obtained was mainly comprised of Ca(OH)2, with a higher CaO concentration and lower loss on ignition (LOI) than their precursors, which is beneficial for cement and lime production. The quality of the PM as a feedstock for cement and lime production was assessed according to the state of practice in these industries. It was demonstrated that regardless of the CaCO3 purity and origin of the precursor limestone, the ED enhances the lime saturation factor due to an increase in the CaO concentration while reducing the rest of primary oxides and impurities of the precursor, which can be separated from the calcium component and isolated in the cell's anodic chamber by decantation. For most of the studied cases, PMs' chemical and physical characteristics supported the ED suitability for cement and hydrated lime production. In this sense, low fineness and specific surface area of the precursor, along with a high content of MgO, were linked to an increase in unreacted CaCO3 in the PM. The effect of using PMs on the cement manufacturing process was initially evaluated by identifying and quantifying the main hydraulic phases and free lime content in laboratory synthesized electrochemical clinker (E-CK). It was demonstrated that the raw meal for E-CK can be formulated by completely replacing the precursor limestone with its PM, reducing CO2 chemical emissions up to 90%. After the clinkerization stage, the resulting E-CK was mainly comprised of Alite (C3S), and the rest of the hydraulic phases remained in suitable proportions for Portland cement production. In addition, under the same thermal treatment, the raw meal formulations based on PM had a lower free lime content than conventional formulations based on the precursor limestones. It was suggested that the high reactivity of the alternative raw meal is due to the lower enthalpy and temperature of decomposition of the Ca(OH)2 dehydroxylation compared to CaCO3 decarbonation
Reduction of the Curing Time and Self-healing of Cold Asphalt Mixtures by Means Magnetic Induction
This research evaluates the feasibility of using magnetic induction to reduce the curing time and for the self-healing of cold asphalt mixtures. For this purpose, the traditional oven curing method was compared with two novel magnetic induction protocols for fast curing in terms of water evaporated, time and energy used; the resulting mixtures were evaluated mechanically. Then, by means of a rupture-healing-rupture test, the feasibility of healing the cold asphalt mixtures by magnetic induction was determined. In addition, the impact of healing by magnetic induction on the service life of the mixtures in the face of particle loss was evaluated. With the developments of this research, it is possible to conclude that fast curing by magnetic induction is a feasible option, which improves the resistance to particle loss but decreases its stiffness and indirect tensile strength of the samples. In addition, it is possible to heal the mixtures by magnetic induction, having an optimum healing temperature, which allows the increase of durability against particle loss
