    Experiments on Tunable Indexing

    The effectiveness and efficiency of an Information Retrieval (IR) system depends on the quality of its indexing system. Indexing con be used in inverted file systemsor in cluster-based retrieval. In this article, new concept called tunable indexing is introduced. With tunable indexing the number of clusters of a document clustering system can be varied to any desired value. Also covered are the computation of Term Discriminarion Value(TDV) with the cover coefficienr (CC) concepts and its use in tunable indexing. A set of experiments has slown the consistency between the CC based TDYs and the TDYs determined with the known methods. The main use of turnable indexing has been observed in determining the parameters of a clustering system

    Techniques for the Integration of Existing Tools

    The purpose of this paper is to explain and demonstrate the advantages of tool integration and the reuse of tools. Several techniques for the integration of existing tools are presented and discussed. These techniques include the use of a monitor, simlated incremental operation, syntax padding, view extraction, and output distribution. The advantages of the use of these methods of tool intregation are illustrated by their use in integrating an existing compiler and on-line debugger. The commands that are produced by this synergisln have increased both the user friendliness of the tools and the power of the resultant command

    A System Dynamics Model For Evaluating Investment Strategies for Agriculture Development

    This paper presents a System Dynamics model to analyze the consequences of investments in agriculture. The data is taken from the various case studies of agriculture in India and is used as an example in the simulation model. A number of investment strategies are simulated to see the performence of the overall system. Some results are presented from the simulation providing insight into the intricacies of the system variables which may be used as guidelines for investing large funds in agro-projects to maximise the benefits and to reduce the undesired consequences. The model can be used to study the effects of changes in one or more controllable variables in the performance of the system. It provides insight into the system variables which are important in making the planning a success and to optimize the profits from the investments. The paper describes in detail the system dynamics flow diagram of the agriculture system model, the factors which are important for investments to be profitable

    Concepts and Effectiveness of the Cover Coefficient Based Clustering Methodology for Text Databases

    An algorithm for document clustering is introduced. The base concept of the algorithm, Cover Coefficient (CC) concept, provides means of estimating the number of clusters within a document database. The CC concept is used also to identify the cluster seeds, to form clusters with the seeds, and to calculate Term Discrimination and Document Significance values (TDV, DSV). TDVs and DSVs are used to optimize document descriptions. The CC concept also relates indexing and clustering analytically. Experimental results indicate that the clustering performance in terms of the percentage of useful information accessed (precision) is forty percent higher, with accompanying reduction in search space, than that of random assignment of documents to clusters. The experiments have validated the indexing-clustering relationships and shown improvements in retrieval precision when TDV and DSV optimizations are used

    A Simple System Dynamics Model For the Wildlife and Fish Resource

    This research aims to build a dynamic model to describe the major relationships within the "Wildlife and Fish" element of the Forest Service. Our purpose is to capture the major relationships so that the model is capable of reproducing the dynamic behavior patterns exhibited by the important Wildlife and Fish variables. Such a model should include not only the "physical variables" (such as "acres prescribed burned" or "number of water developments") but also the management decision processes which influence those variables. Once the major "physical relationships" and "decision relationships" are appropriately described in the model, the latter should be able to exhibit the basic dynamic performance patterns observed in the Wildlife and Fish (WhF) sector. Then, such a model can be used a s a "management laboratory". It is possible to explicate why and how particular performance patterns are exhibited by certain variables. If some of these performance patterns aril undesirable, the model can help managers generate alternative policies to eliminate those undesired patterns. By using such dynamic models for Wildlife & Fish sector it is possible to investigate the aedium-to-long-term implications of various alternative management policies
