Reinforcing community: an Asian cultural complex in an international context
February 2011, it was the time for the annual Chinese New Year Celebration in the local Cincinnati Chinese community again. This is also the first time I attend this event since I came to States. Sitting quietly at the middle of the auditorium, I watched what was going on. The auditorium was predominantly decorated with the red color symbolizing joy and prosperous. The seats of auditorium were filled by Chinese American men, women, and children. The organizers for the events were busy preparing for the stage show; many stage designer were adjusting the lighting environment and music to ensure the best performance, several men were busy adjusting the video camera in good position for the best shot; some ladies were greeting acquaintance and chatting to each other with delight and excitement on their faces; the kids were running around and chasing each other, laughing loudly. Everyone seemed to be enjoying this unique moment of celebration. There is no doubt that it was their time, a special day for all of them to unite with the family members and make connection with their ethnic brothers and sisters. They were celebrating their traditional festival here in US just like how they celebrate them in their home country. The Chinese community, thus, build their mutual connection and cultural recognition through participating in such an event

Faster phones, expanded use of personal computers, widespread access to digital bandwidth, and applications for the internet across multiple devices allows nearly instantaneous access to information and provides a means to stay in constant touch with remote friends and family. On the one hand, technology appears to benefit us socially and culturally by reducing perceived distances between individuals and groups – even between continents. On the other hand, such emersion in technology serves to isolate us from our immediate context by focusing our attention inward, toward ourselves and our devices, distracting us from being truly aware of our surroundings. It is what German philosopher Martin Heidegger would call living an “inauthentic existence
Towards a Closed-loop Community: Creating a Sustainable Seed in the Urban Environment
In the coming years resource stress and waste management will continue to become two of the world’s biggest issues. If order to conserve resources and reduce waste that our cities produce I believe that we will need to begin to move towards a closed-loop pattern of consumption and away from the current, linear and wasteful pattern. If closed-loop systems are adapted and layered into our cities then resources and raw materials will have multiple lives and waste will be significantly reduced. Is it possible for our cities to begin to function according to closed-loop principles? This thesis is centered on three case studies of communities that are able to function as semi-closed-loops systems. The three communities include: Kalundborg Industrial Park in Denmark, the Mobius Project in London, and the Great Lakes Brewing Company in Ohio. Although these communities may not function strictly as closed-loops, they begin to move away from linear patterns of consumption towards closed-loop principles. Each community has been able to achieve a large cost and environmental savings by productively reusing waste products. This paper analyzes each case study and discusses the problems and opportunity that arise when considering closed-loop communities. I believe that adapting closed-loop principles will be the only way for our cities to make significant progress with the sustainability movement

Express yourself: engaging space and sensual experience between body, clothing, and the built environment
The inspiration of fashion development and the execution of architecture redevelopment are bound within a common motif of personality and its intended, as well as unintended, expression. A fashion designers approach in addressing personal expression while embracing and reinventing history, although on a smaller scale, is applicable to the inherently intimate process of renovating and modernizing a house. An analysis of the similarities allows the development of a method to approach incorporating a blend of contemporary ideas with individual, or collective expression, while maintaining the significance of the original. A well executed contemporary architectural intervention to a residential structure, even in the most culturally sensitive areas executed with careful skill and integrity can be more complementary by the contrast of new and old versus trying to copy or replicate the home. (Rogers, 1995) Thus it will ensure the continued use and value within the community and homeowner
Adaptations to knowledge templates in Base-of-the-Pyramid markets: The role of social interaction
While templates may facilitate knowledge sharing within the base-of-the-pyramid, it is often necessary for entrepreneurs to adapt the template for reasons of resource scarcity. We explore the role of social interaction in determining whether these adaptations are beneficial or detrimental. Our results suggest that interactions between the entrepreneur and technical experts who understand the ‘why’ behind each practice can result in improved performance while interactions with entrepreneurial peers can produce more varied results. Thus, the type of knowledge generated through social interaction plays a significant role in the degree to which adaptations to templates are principled versus presumptive in nature
Automated Bulk Uploading of Images and Metadata to Flickr
The Digital Initiatives department at Miami University, like most Digital
Initiatives and Special Collections, has a large amount of rich digital image collections,
stored primarily in a third-party database. Typically, these databases aren't findable to
the average web user. It was our desire to expose these collections to the wider web
environment. We immediately thought of Flickr, the most prominent website for image
discovery and sharing. Our problem was scale; the default uploading interface was too
inefficient to push forward with the project. We developed a set of PHP scripts devised
to interact with Flickr's API to allow for quick and efficient uploading of images as well
as metadata such as titles, subjects, tags, and hyperlinks back to our collections. Once the
scripts were in place the uploading process was completely automatic. Miami University
Library’s Digital Initiatives department has uploaded over 5,000 images using this
method and the results have been outstanding. New users are consistently attracted to
the content and in about a year there have been nearly 200,000 views of our images. This
article will discuss Flickr and the importance of contributing library materials to these
types of social media sharing communities; explain the technology and programming
involved in the project, and discuss our results and the outcomes of project
