Designing a Publish-Substrate for Privacy/Security in Pervasive Environments
The emergence of a multitude of technologies for tracking locations is leading to the design of pervasive location-tracking environments. In order to explore issues in the design of such environments, the University of Michigan is deploying a network of location sensors in a number of buildings. Managing privacy is expected to be a significant concern for acceptance of such pervasive environments. This paper outlines an initial design of a publish-subscribe communication substrate for controlled distribution of sensor data. We describe our prototype as well as a privacy-aware location-tracking application built on top of the system. The focus of this paper is on policy management so as to provide means for allowing users to control distribution of data tagged with their ID to other users and services. The paper shows how a wide variety of policies can be specified in the system and points out directions for future work
Interface-based Programming Assignments and Automatic Grading of Java Programs
AutoGrader is a framework developed at Miami University for the automatic grading of student programming assignments written in the Java programming language. AutoGrader leverages the abstract concept of interfaces, brought out by the Java interface language construct, in both the assignment and grading of programming assignments. The use of interfaces reinforces the role of procedural abstraction in ob ject-oriented programming and allows for a common API to all student code. This common API then enables automatic grading of program functionality. AutoGrader provides a simple instructor API and enables the automatic testing of student code through the Java language features of interfaces and reflection1 . AutoGrader also supports static code analysis using PMD [4] to detect possible bugs, dead code, suboptimal, and overcomplicated code. While AutoGrader is written in and only handles Java programs, this style of automated grading is adaptable to any language that supports (or can mimic) named interfaces and/or abstract functions and that also supports runtime reflection

Educating caregivers about caregiving : an evaluation of the Council on Aging Learning Advantages Program for Informal Caregivers
This report describes the evaluation of the Council on Aging Learning Advantages program; a training program for informal caregivers. Nurse trainers conducted individualized training tailored to fit the circumstances of caregivers and care recipients. Results showed that training resulted in decreased caregiver burden, improved caregiver self-esteem and competence, and objective knowledge of caregiving issues, among other improvements. Program materials could be easily adapted for use in other Area Agencies on Aging
Real choices : a caregiver respite strategy for the state of Ohio
The purpose of Real Choices: A Caregiver Respite Strategy For The State of Ohio was to determine the feasibility of restructuring the PASSPORT program to achieve caregiver respite. We found the majority of PASSPORT consumers have at least one active caregiver. By sustaining caregiver activities and potentially keeping care at home, the cost difference between keeping the PASSPORT consumer enrolled in PASSPORT in comparison to the average cost of nursing facility care are significant. Any additional investment in Ohio s respite strategy will save the state money in the future.
Based on our findings we propose a four component family-based respite strategy. The four components of the proposed PASSPORT respite strategy are: (1) Defacto Respite; (2) Defacto Respite Plus; (3) Institutionalize Respite Strategy; and (4) Real Choices. Defacto respite has already been incorporated into PASSPORT. The three additional components introduce a family-based approach to service plan development, flexibility, and consumer direction culminating in Real Choices . As we see it, Real Choices is a modest, no-strings-attached cash benefit or voucher program that is grounded in a systematic assessment of the primary caregivers needs, similar to the flexibility built into the supplemental services part of the National Family Caregiver Support Program. Cash benefits to purchase goods and services will help offset the often higher cost of other services and/or for some enabling the caregiver to continue support of the care receiver
