Predictors of fear of childbirth in nulliparous women: Childhood traumas and attachment patterns [Author Accepted Manuscript]
This study aimed to investigate the predictors of fear of childbirth (FoC) in nulliparous women by focusing on the effects of childhood trauma and attachment styles. Identifying psychological factors contributing to FoC is important for improving early intervention strategies and maternal well-being. The study included 496 nulliparous women who had never experienced pregnancy or childbirth. Participants completed the Women’s Childbirth Fear – Prior to Pregnancy Scale (WCF-PPS), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire–Short Form (CTQ-SF), and the Experiences in Close Relationships– Relationship Structures Questionnaire (ECR-RS). Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between FoC, childhood trauma, and attachment styles. Fear of childbirth showed a significant positive correlation with anxious attachment (r = .257, p < .001). Weak but statistically significant associations were also found with emotional abuse (r = .094, p = .039) and total childhood trauma (r = .090, p = .049). However, in the regression analysis, only anxious attachment significantly predicted FoC (β = .172, p < .001), while childhood trauma and avoidant attachment did not emerge as significant predictors. Anxious attachment was identified as the most prominent psychological predictor of FoC in nulliparous women. These results suggest that addressing attachment-related anxiety and early traumatic experiences in pre-pregnancy or prenatal psychological evaluations may reduce fear of childbirth and support maternal mental health.reviewedacceptedVersio

Measuring content validity , face validity and ecological-digital validity
Background: Many observational instruments have been developed to measure aspects of the parent-child relationship or interaction patterns. However, given the flood of terms and scale labels, these instruments often suffer from a lack of factorial, content, convergent or discriminant validity. Research Question: We examine how one can assess content validity during item pretesting and test development using multi-source information from experts, novices and ChatGPT-4o. We ask: Are ratings on the suitability of items consistent within and between these groups? Does content validity depend on scale characteristics such as construct popularity or category breadth? Method: The newly developed parent-child interaction inventory, namely the Observing Parent-Child Interaction Inventory (OPCII-1.0), comprises 19 scales with a total of 460 items. Each item was rated independently by six experts, six novices and six ChatGPT-4o prompts. A linear mixed model was applied to analyze the influence of group membership and item pool characteristics, with repeated measures nested within raters. Results: Mean score differences emerged across groups, with experts rating items most conservatively, ChatGPT-4o most liberally and novices falling in between. Additionally, item pools differed significantly in terms of their average suitability scores. An exploratory factor analysis of rater agreement revealed that ChatGPT-4o ratings showed the highest and most consistent loading on a common factor of item suitability. Discussion: Our multi-source evaluation provides evidence for content, face and ecological-digital validity. By implementing a transparent methodology—including detailed item generation instructions—we enhance the replicability of content validity assessments. This approach aims to initiate a convergent development process following decades of divergent construction of parent-child interaction instruments.notReviewedothe

Dataset for: Age-related inhibitory deficits in auditory attention: Evidence from attention switching
In multi-talker environments, inhibitory control supports selective listening by reducing interference from auditory distractors. Although aging is associated with sensory decline, age-related deficits in inhibitory processes may impair the control of auditory attention. To investigate whether age-related inhibitory deficits contribute to changes in auditory attention, we compared the listening performance of 45 younger and 45 older adults in a cued selective listening task. In each trial, a visual cue guided attention toward one of three sound sources (A, B, or C). Participants categorised the target speech at the cued location while ignoring a simultaneous distractor. Across trials, the cue either returned to a previously attended location (ABA) or to a new one (CBA). This manipulation allowed us to measure the new n-2 location repetition effect, assessing whether inhibition contributes to auditory attention switching. This study also measured the congruency effect as a marker of target-distractor segregation. Older adults showed general slowing, yet no age-related deficit emerged in the congruency effect, even when sensory decline was taken into account. The n-2 location repetition effect emerged as a repetition benefit in reaction times, suggesting in both age groups similar facilitation, rather than persisting inhibition, when returning to a previously attended location. Older adults showed a repetition benefit also in error rates. Overall, these findings provide no evidence for an age-related inhibitory deficit during selective listening. Instead, they suggest that auditory attention remains largely preserved in healthy aging, with older adults effectively resisting distractor interference and flexibly orienting attention under these task requirements.unknow

Dataset for: When affordances are not universal: The negative compatibility effect is modulated by task type and spatial association
Humans prepare motor actions when perceiving objects that afford specific behaviors, highlighting the tight link between perception and action. For example, seeing a graspable object like a mug can trigger hand movements aligned to its handle- a phenomenon known as the object affordance effect. Vainio et al. (2011) demonstrated this can produce a negative compatibility effect (NCE). This occurs when a spatially compatible prime object eliciting an
affordance (e.g., a mug), but to be ignored, precedes a target requiring a spatial response. Given that task demands shape response execution (e.g., Schöpper & Frings, 2024), we hypothesized that the effect of affordance would vary accordingly. In Experiment 1, participants performed three tasks: arrow direction discrimination, shape discrimination, and circle localization. In all tasks, the time interval between the affordance object (a mug) and the onset of the target, as well as the compatibility between the mug and the response, varied. The arrow task replicated the NCE—responses were slower in compatible trials at short intervals. No compatibility effects were observed in the shape task. Notably, the localization task revealed a positive compatibility effect (PCE). The variation in compatibility effects suggests task-dependent affordances. Experiment 2 manipulated the target position relative to the fixation to investigate the PCE in the localization task and explore the differences in the compatibility effect. Although PCE was not replicated, the NCE appeared again for location tasks. Our results
suggest that task constraints shape the compatibility effect, and distractor-induced affordances engage inhibitory mechanisms only when spatial features are relevant. The current study demonstrated that the NCE reflects inhibitory mechanisms involved in visually based response selection (see Vainio & Ellis, 2020), and it only arises when the task requires processing of spatial information (e.g., direction discrimination or localization). The variation in findings across studies with different experimental designs may reflect underlying differences in contextual and task-related factors. In this regard, our study contributes to this debate by illustrating how task context critically determines the influence of primed affordances on response modulation within a single experimental framework. This thereby emphasizes the visuomotor flexibility in responding to object affordances, which can be influenced by contextual factors such as task requirements, thematic relations between objects (e.g., Haddad et al., 2023; 2024), and object features like color (e.g., Garofalo & Riggio, 2022). In real-life scenarios, this implies that when searching for your mug among others to reach-to-grasp it based on its color or shape, the orientation affordances of surrounding objects do not interfere with your action. However, if you are searching based on the anticipated location or orientation of your mug, the handle affordances of distractor mugs can interfere with the reach-to-grasp action. This finding nicely fits the affordance competition hypothesis (Cisek, 2007), which is concerned with selecting the action possibility that best matches the current goals of an organism.unknow
