Effective Leadership Through Effective Communication
Get PDFA public school in Pennsylvania was experiencing an issue with its administrative leadership. The ineffective leadership strategies resulted in failures within communication styles and abilities. Through a series of interviews and research, this course was developed to coach leaders within a school building on how to more effectively communicate and work with their staff members. The goal is to provide a series of behavior changing based instruction to reduce the ineffectiveness of leadership within the building. It uses an asynchronous approach with live instruction and involves the learners with an interactive workbook component to follow the learning course. The course follows four primary modules to help build effective communication and leadership skills within an elementary school. Those involve individualizing communication styles, building and maintaining relationships, having an active presence, and practicing direct accountability for themselves and their staff

Characterization of the Capicua Interactome
No full textThe transcriptional repressor Capicua (Cic) regulates the development of the mammalian brain, lungs, and immune system and its dysfunction and dysregulation are causative in a panoply of human diseases including neurodegeneration and cancer. Few interactors have been identified that contribute to Cic’s function and regulation, and the mechanisms behind these processes remain unclear. Further identification and characterization of key Cic interactions is therefore necessary to elucidate these mechanisms and pinpoint targets for therapeutic development in associated diseases. I first aimed to further characterize the interaction between Cic and the ERK kinase, a known inhibitor of Cic function. Previous work in our lab identified several ERK-specific Cic phosphorylation sites, and I demonstrated that these sites are required for proper downregulation of Cic downstream of Torso receptor tyrosine kinase signaling during embryogenesis. Furthermore, I showed that these sites are also required for downregulation of Cic during neurodevelopment, leading to changes in neurobehavioral outcomes. I then performed a series of biochemical and genetic assays to elucidate and characterize the Cic interactome in mammalian cells and in vivo in Drosophila melanogaster. In mammalian cells, I conducted affinity purification mass spectrometry to identify proteins that interact with both human and Drosophila Cic. I posit that the conservation of these interactions suggests functional relevance. I then conducted a genetic screen to identify functional interactions that influence Cic-mediated wing development in Drosophila. I identified several interacting genes, including corepressors and components of complexes that remodel DNA accessibility. These findings contribute to the understanding of how Cic mediates repression and gains access to target DNA sites to repress transcription
Reimagining Schoolwide Social and Emotional Learning Implementation in the Urban Setting: A Case Study of a Massachusetts Elementary School
Get PDFFor social and emotional learning (SEL) initiatives to have the greatest positive impact on students, they must be implemented schoolwide. There is an urgent need for schools to shift away from traditional SEL frameworks toward transformative SEL (TSEL). TSEL program implementation cannot be done in isolation; rather, it must be fueled by a shared vision and dedication to team learning. To conduct this study, the researcher employed the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) Guide to Schoolwide SEL and Senge’s learning organization as a theory of change. The study sought to uncover gaps in schoolwide SEL implementation in one public urban elementary school designated as requiring assistance or intervention by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Using a case study research design, the researcher met with school-based staff in a variety of roles to find out the degree to which their knowledge of SEL, or lack thereof, affected the implementation of successful schoolwide SEL. This qualitative research project included interviews and focus groups along with a document review. The study results call for urban schools to rethink SEL implementation and encourage their transformation into learning organizations that include the voices and participation of all members of the school community
Understanding the Indirect Strategy Moment in Global Affairs
Get PDFThis article argues that policymakers need to better grasp what can best be understood as the “indirect strategy moment” in global affairs. It explains what is meant by indirect strategy in the classical strategic thought, before analyzing how indirect strategy has already been applied in the post-Cold War era. The article will then illustrate how indirect strategy is being applied in the cyber, social media, and telecommunications domains, before arguing that adopting “indirect strategy lenses” appears to be rather important in order to better frame current and ongoing geostrategic developments across a range of issues and domains. A recurring theme is that in this indirect strategy moment, the line between peace and war has been increasingly blurred

Give Us This Day: A (Secular) Case for Observing the Sabbath
No full textIn this paper, I argue that embracing a secular version of the Judeo-Christian practice of Sabbath-keeping, regardless of religious affiliation (or lack thereof), offers a viable and vital pathway toward improved individual and collective well-being in the contemporary United States. Secular sabbath-keeping, I suggest, should reorient our focus away from ‘having’ and toward ‘being’, as described by Erich Fromm in To Have or to Be?. After exploring the underlying philosophy of the religious Sabbath and providing a new framework of understanding for the secular sabbath, I offer some examples of appropriate secular sabbath activities. Ultimately, the secular sabbath is intended as a preview of, and first step toward, human flourishing
