Data exchange in distributed mining systems by OPC Unified Architecture, WLAN and TTE VLF technology
Mining operations rely on effective extraction policies, which base on concerted management and technical arrangements. In addition to commodities, mining of data is the increasingly matter of subject in mining engineering. The Horizon 2020 project – Real-Time-Mining supports the ongoing paradigm shift of pushing mining activities from discontinuous to continuous operation. In this respect, the partners TU Bergakademie Freiberg (TU BAF) and IBeWa Consulting tackle the issue of physical and logical data acquisition in underground mining.
The first aspect of the project addresses the ‘logical’ provision of data. Mining technology is increasingly interacting among each other and integrated into globally distributed systems. At the same time, the integration of current mining devices and machineries into superordinated systems is still complex and costly. This means only a few number of mining operators is capable to integrate their operation technology into a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. TU BAF presents the middleware OPC Unified Architecture, which is a platform independent middleware for data exchange and technology interconnection among distributed systems. By installing a SCADA demonstrator at the research and education mine Reiche Zeche, TU BAF intends to present the technical feasibility of a SCADA system basing on OPC UA even for SME mining operations.
The second aspect of the project addresses the ‘physical’ provision of data via wireless transmission. The targeted use cases are mobile machineries and the surveillance of remote mine sites. Mobile machineries in underground mining are increasingly equipped with data management and autonomous operation systems. Correspondent data exchange to superordinated systems is mostly realized via Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). A comprehensive WLAN signal coverage, however, is generally not maintained in under-ground mines due to lacking technical and economic feasibility. With the intention to in-crease the coverage/expense ratio at underground WLAN installations, TU BAF and IBe-Wa Consulting installed a WLAN test loop at Reiche Zeche mine basing on leaky feeder cables. Simultaneously, IBeWa Consulting pushes forward the surveilability of remote and/or hardly accessible mining sites by Through The Earth (TTE) data transmission. Current test performances present an enhanced stability for data transmission at ore / gneiss formations beyond 200m, primarily basing on a better alignment of the system to the isotropic characteristics of the bedrock
Forecast of rock mass and ground surface movements caused by the convergence of salt caverns for storage of liquid and gaseous energy carriers: Forecast of rock mass and ground surface movements caused by the convergence of salt caverns for storage of liquid and gaseous energy carriers
The paper presents a method of calculating deformation coefficients for any point situated in the overlying rock mass or on the ground surface. This solution was based on the method presented by Sroka and Schober (1982, 1987), taking into account new theoretical achievements and the current results of in situ measurements
Beeinflussung der Gefügestruktur bei der gerichteten Erstarrung von multikristallinem Silicium und deren Auswirkungen auf die elektrischen Eigenschaften
Solar cells convert sunlight into electrical energy using the photo effect. With a mar-ket share of 60%, multicrystalline silicon (mc-Si) is the most frequently used absorber material. Standard mc-Si ingots are directionally solidified in a fused silica (SiO2) crucible, which exhibits a silicon nitride (Si3N4) inner coating. After the entire raw material has been melted, the nucleation takes place on the Si3N4 inner coating at the bottom of the crucible. This results in an inhomogeneous initial grain structure and an increased fraction of dislocation clusters in the upper part of the ingot, which decrease the quality of standard mc-Si. Therefore, the global goal is the development of a cost-effective technology that reduces the formation of clusters and enhances the quality of mc-Si ingots.
One way of achieving that goal is to produce the so-called \"high performance multi crystalline silicon\" (HPM-Si). During the directional solidification silicon raw material remains unmelted at the bottom of the SiO2 crucible, whereby crystallization does start on the silicon feedstock a few millimeters above the crucible bottom. Compared to standard mc-Si, a finer grained structure with many small grains is formed, which are separated by so-called random grain boundaries. Since the movement of dislocations across this grain boundary type has rarely been observed, the risk of formation of dislocation clusters, which have a negative impact on the efficiency of solar cells, is greatly reduced for HPM-Si. However, the disadvantage of the HPM-Si compared to the mc-Si is the yield loss resulting from the unmelted raw material at the crucible bottom.
Hence, the aim of the present work is to produce mc-Si with a fine-grained structure in combination with a high fraction of random grain boundaries without the disad-vantage of yield loss. In order to investigate the grain structure in dependence of the nucleation conditions G1 ingots having a mass of 14.5 kg and dimensions of 220x220x130 mm³ were directional solidified in a furnace. The analysis of the grain structure with respect to the grain size, grain orientation and the random grain boundary length fraction and the comparison with the HPM-Si reference crystal took place on horizontal wafers with a thickness of 3mm.
One possibility to influence the grain structure of mc-Si could be the variation of the cooling conditions before the start of crystallization at the crucible bottom. In a first series of experiments, a gas-flowed cooling plate, positioned below the crucible, was used. An increased gas flow increases the axial heat flow downwards and the cooling rate below the crucible bottom in the same direction. The detected cooling rate, measured by a thermocouple in the silicon melt 5 mm above the crucible bottom, varied in a range between 0.06-1.5 K/min. An increased cooling rate increases the supercooling, with a maximum of 2K. The analysis of the grain structure shows that a reduction in the cooling rate in combination with the lowest supercooling minimizes the average grain size and increases the fraction of random grain boundaries. However, an HPM-Si like grain structure (grain size and fraction of random grain boundaries comparable to HPM-Si) could not completely produced. Furthermore, due to the extended process time, the wafer yield is reduced, whereby the reduction of the cooling rate is not a preferable method for the industrial process.
In a second experimental series, which took place under constant cooling rates, the influence of an additional nucleation layer on the initial grain structure was investigated. For this purpose, the additional nucleation layer was applied on the already existing Si3N4 inner coating on the crucible bottom. In order to adjust a HPM-Si like grain structure, the contact angle of the silicon melt on the additional nucleation layer should be lower than on the Si3N4 inner coating. The theoretical basis for this hypothesis is the relationship between the contact angle and the nucleation energy, which states that a reduced contact angle lowers the nucleation energy and can ultimately lead to more nuclei. Furthermore, in order to avoid melting, the additional nucleation layer must have a higher melting point than silicon.
Suitable materials for the application as a foreign seed sample are SiC, SiO2 and Al2O3, which are used in the form of particles with different sizes. The production of the additional nucleation layer was carried out by a spraying as well as by an embedding procedure. These layers exhibit different thermal conductivity as well as surface roughness. Embedded nucleation layers generate higher roughness values than sprayed nucleation layers. The analysis of the grain structure identified the surface roughness as the main influencing factor on the initial grain size. While an increased surface roughness (Rq>100μm) results in a fine-grained structure (average grain size: 2 mm²) with a reduced surface roughness (Rq<100μm).
However, the analysis of the grain boundary relationship shows that the fraction of random grain boundaries does not correlate with the average grain size. Only a ma-terial dependency was detected. All SiO2 nucleation layers generate an increased fraction of random grain boundaries, comparable to the HPM-Si material. In contrast, the fraction of random grain boundaries was reduced for all SiC nucleation layers. This result is probably established with the different thermal conductivities of the used materials. The increased thermal conductivity of the sample with the SiC nucleation layers increases the cooling rate, promoting dendritic growth. In contrast the lower thermal conductivity of the SiO2 nucleation layers reduces the cooling rate and dendritic growth is suppressed. Since dendrites exhibit a Σ3 grain boundary relationship in the center, the fraction of this grain boundary type increases for SiC nucleation layers and the fraction of random grain boundaries decreases.
In this thesis, various possibilities for influencing the grain structure have been pre-sented. A SiO2 nucleation layer with a roughness value Rq> 200μm represents an industrially relevant solution for the production of mc-Si with comparable properties to the HPM-Si without the disadvantages of yield loss. Hence, it was possible to in-crease the yield with comparable material quality, whereby the production costs could be reduced. Some first crucible manufacturers have already transferred the use of the SiO2 nucleation layers on top of the already existing Si3N4 inner coating at the crucible bottom to production
Real-Time Mining - a framework for continuous process control and optimization
The flow of information, and consequently the decision-making along the chain of mining from exploration to beneficiation, typically occurs in a discontinuous fashion over long timespans. In addition, due to the uncertain nature of the knowledge about deposits and the inherent spatial distribution of material characteristics, actual production performance often deviates from expectations. Reconciliation exercises to adjust mineral resource and reserve models and planning assumptions are performed with timely lags of weeks, months or even years
Towards mobile mapping of underground mines
Mobile laser scanning systems automate the acquisition of 3D point clouds of environments. The mapping systems are commonly mounted on cars or ships. This paper presents a flexible mapping solution mounted on an underground vehicle that is able to map underground mines in 3D in walking speeds. A clever choice of hard- and software enables the system to generate 3D maps without using GPS (global positioning system) information and without relying on highly expensive IMU (inertial measurement unit) systems
Mine Digitalization: Automation and Collision Avoidance by Radar-tag Localization and Radar-scan Mapping (UPNS4D+)
Motivation
Mine digitization is a consequent approach to establish industry 4.0 / IoT related mine operation models based on various dimensions: flexibility, coverage, real-time capability and analytics. Networking technology, wired and wireless, can be easily deployed large scale. Miniaturized sensors, thus can be placed anywhere.
Laser technology has been successfully used for more than a decade in the manufacturing industry. However, due to restrictions found in challenging heavy industry environments, such as dust, fog, rain or snow, laser technology can only rarely be found in mining applications. At the same time, technology-supported geometrical environmental scanning is essential for the control of mining machines. GPS in open pit mining is the state of the art technology for machine allocation and dispatch, whereby an underground equivalent is still missing.
Because of this technology gap, many machines are frequently operated beyond their original design boundaries, and not according to the production planning which may result in significant safety impacts and collisions. Recent breakthroughs in radar technology both in 2D/3D passive scanning as well as /3D Active localization is bound to trigger a revolution in mining. In close collaboration with major universities, radar technology has been developed to mature and ruggedized industrial sensors by indurad.
The public funded project “UPNS4D+” which stands for “Underground 4D+ Positioning, Navigation and Mapping System“, funded by BMBF (FKZ: 033R126), focuses on fully autonomous operated vehicles, including navigation, orientation, collision avoidance by driving autonomously around obstacles whether detected with the radar-tag system or by environmental Radar-scan.
Asset and Personnel Localization
Radar-tags are suitable to detect any tagged object or person. Vehicle based Radar-radios are used to measure distances and angles to radar-tags, relative to the vehicle. Any other machinery, person helmets, equipment can be tagged and thus can be localized. Based on this information, collision avoidance systems can be realized, by informing the vehicles operator or as break assistance system. Next to important localizations “geotags”, e.g. at crushers, the system can be used to exactly position vehicles, like LHDs to perfectly dump the moved material. Virtual fences can be realized to stop machinery if anyone enters a secured area. This enables fast operation e.g. at drill rigs, where manual work is required, when drill pipes have to be added. In room and pillar environments road crossings can be secured, by detecting exactly the own position at the crossing and observation other vehicles.
Environmental Face and Rib Mapping
Radar-scan Mapping is further, very advanced radar based technology to measure 2D planes or even the complete 3D environment around vehicles. As well infrastructure based usage might be considered, e.g. at crossings or crushers. Autonomous mapping radar scans algorithms are developed to reconstruct the surrounding and to detect the own driven trajectory including 3D translation, rotation

Effect of diaphragm wall construction on adjacent deep foundation
The need of using the underground space was limited in the human history, but in the last century and due to the increase of world population, the use of the underground space has become essential. Underground metro stations, deep garages, tunnels and basements, etc... are examples of using the underground space inside the cities. The use of underground space is conducted through deep excavation or tunneling. Several techniques are used to conduct the deep excavation and one of the most popular and well known techniques used for deep excavation is the diaphragm walling technique which is widely used specially inside the cities to safe space because it requires a very small space to conduct a deep reinforced concreted wall under the ground. However, the construction of such walls causes deformation of the surrounding ground and it could also affect the nearby existing structures. In some recorded cases the slurry trench failed and causes a great deformation which effect the nearby structures. However, Minor damages and cracks were observed in buildings near stable slurry trenches, because the soil deformation was high.
The existing structures inside the cities have been constructed on shallow or deep foundations and this research was oriented to study the effect of diaphragm wall installation on the existing adjacent piled foundation. Very limited studies were made to investigate such an effect. At Cambridge university centrifuge model tests were conducted to investigate the effect of slurry reduction on single piles. Field observation was conducted in several projects and showed the settlement and deformation of buildings located on deep foundation during the diaphragm wall trenching. Numerical analysis was conducted using FLAC 3D to simulate the laboratory and the available field works. FLAC 3D is a commercial software and it depend in its analysis on finite difference method. The purpose of the simulation was to verify the used numerical analysis method. The results from the numerical analysis were in a good agreement with the available field data results, and they were also in good agreement with the laboratory test results regarding soil settlement but it was not in such good agreement when they were compared regarding the pile. Generally, from the verification the numerical analysis method is considered to be reliable.
A parametric study was performed using the verified numerical analysis method. The flexible nature of the numerical analysis allows to simulate different cases and to study a variety of parameters. The output of the parametric study was the pile deflection, the bending moment and the shaft friction. The study was divided into three main parts while each part contains several parameter combinations. The first part studied the effect of the single and double panel(s) on the single pile group that has different piles numbers and formations. The second and third parts studied the effect of multiple panels on connected pile groups and piled raft foundation, respectively. Generally, the studied parameters can be divided into three main groups. The first is related to the trench which includes the panel dimension, the number of panels and the slurry level inside the panel. The effect of slurry pressure reduction at some levels inside the trench was also studied. The second group concerned the soil type and ground water level. The third group is related to the deep foundation which includes pile characteristics, location, and formation within the group. The results from the parametric study showed that the pile behavior was greatly affected by panel length, groundwater level, slurry level inside the trench and steadiness of the slurry pressure. The piles were also affected by the different stages of construction related to the pile location from the constructed panel. The piles within the group act together so they behave different from each other according to their position.
The effect of the pile on the trench stability is presented through a simple analytical approach which is based on the wedge analysis. The analytical approach provided equations that calculate the factor of safety in two and three dimensions. The pile location was governing the equation that calculate the factor of safety because the pile could be fully inside the failure wedge or intersect with the failure surface. A comparative study was conducted to find out the effect of the different pile location and other parameters on the safety factor. Generally, this comparative study showed that the pile located within the failure wedge reduces the factor of safety, while the pile that intersects the failure surface could increase it. The pile row near a trench that contains piles inside the failure wedge and others intersects the failure surface act together to balance the failure wedge. The factor of safety results of some cases from the analytical approach were also compared with those calculated from the numerical analysis. In general, the factor of safety from the numerical analysis was higher than that calculated from the proposed analytical approach.
This research helped to understand the trenching effect on the ground surface and on the nearby piled foundations. It provided charts that could help to predict the soil deformation and earth pressure coefficient which could be used in the design. It showed through the parametric study the precautions that should be taken into consideration during trenching process near piled foundation. This research provided a design method for the slurry trench panel near piled foundation
