    Get PDF

For some time now, terrestrial laser scanning has been used for surveying above and below ground structures. The demand for detailed digital 3D documentation requires suitable methods that allow the highest possible geometric resolution with correspondingly efficient recording methods. The underground conditions in particular pose great challenges for the recording: although many scan positions have to be recorded, the time required to complete an entire scan project plays an important role. Although no GNSS (global navigation satellite system) measurements are possible, the demands on the robustness of the registration and the accuracy of the overall project are high. On the one hand, large and complex 3D data should be recorded as gap-free and complete as possible, on the other hand, the results should be made available to as many users as possible in a fluent and easy to use way

Electronic structure and transport in low dimensional systems

The work discusses the development of molecular electronics based on the possibility of the usage of anorganic quantum dots and organic molecules as basis material. Of special interest are the properties of semiconductor quantum dots and their modification due to the coupling of quantum dots from different materials. Eventually these are proper candidates to avoid the fast recombination of excitons which is a problem in many organic photovoltaic materials, by local separation of charge carriers. Another materials class investigated are the so called charge transfer dimers. On the way to usable molecular building blocks switching and rectification behavior are important properties, therefore they were of special interest in the investigation. Especially the usage of charge transfer materials in rectification was already suggested in the 70’s, but could be realized till now only with a quiet limited success. Already around the millennium it was shown that a too strong coupling between the components leads to a resymmetrization of the I-V-characteristics. For all systems the electronic structure was investigated by means of density functional theory. Additional the charge transport in between gold leads was computed based on non equilibrium Greens functions. For the system of coupled quantum dots it is shown how the combination of several gates can be used to adjust the transport properties. This work shows that the rectification effect within weakly coupled charge transfer systems stays also small because also in this case a resymmetrization of the I-V-characteristics takes place.:1 Introduction 2 Molecular Electronics 3 Theoretical background 4 Computational details and software packages 5 Modeling 6 Results and Discussion 6.1 Quantum dots 6.2 Transport through coupled quantum dots 6.3 Charge transfer dimers 6.4 Transport through charge transfer dimers 7 Conclusion 8 Outlook Acknowledgement List of Figures List of Tables Bibliography List of own PublicationsDie Arbeit befasst sich mit der Entwicklung der molekularen Elektronik und insbesondere mit der Prüfung der Verwendbarkeit von anorganischen Quantenpunkten und organischen Molekülen für diesen Bereich.

In this manuscript, distinct problems concerning carbon-bonded materials processing and characterization were analyzed, from bulk to cellular samples. The main motivation was to address central topics that would enhance the comprehension of the material’s behavior, as well as trigger targeted improvements. Some of the topics this thesis covers are: Non-linear Young’s modulus behavior of carbon-bonded alumina at high temperatures; Influence of the processing route on the cold crushing strength of carbon-bonded alumina foam filters; Geometric characterization of ceramic foam filters as a tool to understand processing parameters; Use of advanced techniques such as computer tomography and finite element modelling to correlate processing parameters and mechanical behavior. In most of the analyses, non-standard computational strategies were adopted. In those cases, algorithms were written to facilitate the evaluations, or even enable it in the first place. All the algorithms’ concepts are described in this thesis and their codes are available in the Appendices. The current work was carried out within the framework of the Collaborative Research Center 920 (CRC 920) “Multifunctional filters for metal melt filtration - a contribution to zero defect materials” at the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG)

The Need for Accurate Pre-processing and Data Integration for the Application of Hyperspectral Imaging in Mineral Exploration

    Get PDF
Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is one of the key technologies in current non-invasive material analysis. Recent developments in sensor design and computer technology allow the acquisition and processing of high spectral and spatial resolution datasets. In contrast to active spectroscopic approaches such as X-ray fluorescence or laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, passive hyperspectral reflectance measurements in the visible and infrared parts of the electromagnetic spectrum are considered rapid, non-destructive, and safe. Compared to true color or multi-spectral imagery, a much larger range and even small compositional changes of substances can be differentiated and analyzed. Applications of hyperspectral reflectance imaging can be found in a wide range of scientific and industrial fields, especially when physically inaccessible or sensitive samples and processes need to be analyzed. In geosciences, this method offers a possibility to obtain spatially continuous compositional information of samples, outcrops, or regions that might be otherwise inaccessible or too large, dangerous, or environmentally valuable for a traditional exploration at reasonable expenditure. Depending on the spectral range and resolution of the deployed sensor, HSI can provide information about the distribution of rock-forming and alteration minerals, specific chemical compounds and ions. Traditional operational applications comprise space-, airborne, and lab-scale measurements with a usually (near-)nadir viewing angle. The diversity of available sensors, in particular the ongoing miniaturization, enables their usage from a wide range of distances and viewing angles on a large variety of platforms. Many recent approaches focus on the application of hyperspectral sensors in an intermediate to close sensor-target distance (one to several hundred meters) between airborne and lab-scale, usually implying exceptional acquisition parameters. These comprise unusual viewing angles as for the imaging of vertical targets, specific geometric and radiometric distortions associated with the deployment of small moving platforms such as unmanned aerial systems (UAS), or extreme size and complexity of data created by large imaging campaigns. Accurate geometric and radiometric data corrections using established methods is often not possible. Another important challenge results from the overall variety of spatial scales, sensors, and viewing angles, which often impedes a combined interpretation of datasets, such as in a 2D geographic information system (GIS). Recent studies mostly referred to work with at least partly uncorrected data that is not able to set the results in a meaningful spatial context. These major unsolved challenges of hyperspectral imaging in mineral exploration initiated the motivation for this work. The core aim is the development of tools that bridge data acquisition and interpretation, by providing full image processing workflows from the acquisition of raw data in the field or lab, to fully corrected, validated and spatially registered at-target reflectance datasets, which are valuable for subsequent spectral analysis, image classification, or fusion in different operational environments at multiple scales. I focus on promising emerging HSI approaches, i.e.: (1) the use of lightweight UAS platforms, (2) mapping of inaccessible vertical outcrops, sometimes at up to several kilometers distance, (3) multi-sensor integration for versatile sample analysis in the near-field or lab-scale, and (4) the combination of reflectance HSI with other spectroscopic methods such as photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy for the characterization of valuable elements in low-grade ores. In each topic, the state of the art is analyzed, tailored workflows are developed to meet key challenges and the potential of the resulting dataset is showcased on prominent mineral exploration related examples. Combined in a Python toolbox, the developed workflows aim to be versatile in regard to utilized sensors and desired applications

    Get PDF

Aminopolysiloxane-coated thin-film bulk acoustic resonators for selective room temperature CO2 sensing

    Get PDF
    Small and affordable CO2 sensors are in high demand for modern applications, such as smart buildings, smartphones, electrical cars or medicine. The thin-film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) presents a promising platform to fulfil these demands by functionalising its surface with materials that reversibly interact with CO2. In this thesis, aminopolysiloxane-coated FBARs are prepared and analysed regarding their CO2-sensing performance. It is found that they can reach high CO2 sensitivity with resolutions up to 50 ppm in a dynamic range between 400 ppm and 5000 ppm. It is also shown that common cross-sensitivities, such as changing humidity, can be separated from the CO2 signal. These are promising results on the way to develop a new generation of CO2 sensors. However, it is also found that the sensor sensitivity decreases over time. Analytical examinations show that the main degradation product in aminopolysiloxanes is urea, which forms preferrably in softer polymers and at temperatures above 80 °C. This degradation is found in all analysed compositions of aminopolysiloxanes that were aged for more than one year showing the stability limitations of this sensor concept.:1 Introduction 9 1.1 Motivation for new CO2 sensors . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9 1.2 The FBAR as a high-potential sensor device . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10 1.3 Content of this work . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 11 2 Fundamentals 13 2.1 Gas Sensors . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 13 2.1.1 De_nition, History and Classi_cation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 13 2.1.2 Gas sensor characteristics . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15 2.1.3 State-of-the-art CO2 sensors . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 16 2.2 FBAR Fundamentals . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 20 2.2.1 Acoustic resonator theory . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 20 2.2.2 The Mason Model . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 22 2.2.3 Sensing theory . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 24 2.2.4 Film resonance . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 26 2.3 CO2-sensitive materials . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28 2.3.1 General Requirements . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28 2.3.2 Classes of CO2 sorbents . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 29 2.3.3 Suitabe materials for the functionalisation of the FBAR . . . . . . . . 35 3 Experimental details 37 3.1 FBAR designs . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 37 3.1.1 Passive FBARs . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 37 3.1.2 Active FBARs . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 38 3.2 Gas measurement setup . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 39 3.2.1 Passive FBARs . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 39 3.2.2 Active FBARs . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 39 3.3 Development of the sensitive layer . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 40 3.3.1 Material choice . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 40 3.3.2 Material preparation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 43 3.3.3 Deposition methods . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 44 3.3.4 Annealing . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 45 3.4 Analytical techniques . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 46 3.4.1 Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 46 3.4.2 Raman spectroscopy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 47 3.4.3 X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 47 3.4.4 Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 47 3.4.5 Acoustic measurements . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 47 4 Results and discussion 49 4.1 FBARs functionalised with ethyl cellulose . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 49 4.1.1 Acoustic characterisation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 49 4.1.2 Humidity sensing . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 55 4.1.3 Stability . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 58 6 Contents 4.2 FBARs with aminopolysiloxanes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 59 4.2.1 Acoustic characterisation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 59 4.2.2 Humidity and CO2 sensing . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 63 4.2.3 Stability . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 67 4.3 Degradation mechanisms in aminopolysiloxanes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 69 4.3.1 Stability evaluation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 69 4.3.2 Analytical characterisation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 70 4.3.3 Degradation hypothesis . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 78 4.4 CO2 sensing with an active FBAR array . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 82 4.4.1 Presentation of the functionalised sensor chip . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 82 4.4.2 Sensor characteristics . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 83 4.4.3 Selective Multigassensing . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 89 5 Summary 93 6 Outlook 95 7 Appendix 97 7.1 Additional tables . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 97 7.2 Additional pictures . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 98 Bibliography 10

Occurrence and fate of endocrine disrupting chemicals and other hydrophobic organic compounds in a tropical river in Kenya

    Get PDF
This thesis explores the application of passive sampling as a novel monitoring technique capable of quantifying aquatic pollutants at low environmental concentrations, and in a form that is directly applicable to risk assessment. Two passive samplers, namely polyethersulfone (PES) and silicone rubber (SR), were used to monitor some endocrine disruptors (EDCs) and hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) in freshwater and sediments of a tropical river in Kenya. PES was applied for the first time for time-integrative sampling of these compound classes and was able to quantify the target compounds at low concentrations that were not significantly different to those obtained using the well-established SR, despite differences in uptake mechanisms with both sampler materials. This study demonstrated that passive samplers are versatile tools that can be applied in remote locations, and with proper storage, they can be transported and analyzed far afield
