What determines, using the new institutional economic approach, the development of the micro-insurance sector in less-developed countries, and what is its role for economic growth in such countries?
This thesis examines the development of the micro-insurance sector in less developed countries, using the theoretical approach of new institutional economics. The main research questions are whether it is the insufficient compatibility between formal and informal institutions that hinders the development of micro-insurance below what had been widely predicted by the academic community? And what has to be done institutionally to make this industry an active contributor to economic growth? To investigate these questions, three distinct empirical studies, of which one is based on field work data generated for the thesis specifically, were carried out using a Probit model, a system of Generalized Method of Movements model, and a Vector Error Correction model. The hypotheses tests suggest that (i) the relevant informal institutions have a significant influence on the decision of individuals to enrol into micro-insurance product in Nigeria; (ii) by controlling for institutional quality, a positive development of the institution of micro-insurance contributes to reducing the size of the informal economy in Nigeria and other less developed countries); and (iii) that micro-insurance has both short and long term positive impacts on the economic growth in Nigeria.:Table of contents

Thermal induced cracking of granite
The impact of temperatures (up to 1000 °C) with various heating rates of 5 °C/min, 200 °C/min, 300 °C/min, and according to ISO 834 standard fire curve on physical, mechanical, and thermal properties, as well as thermo-mechanical behaviors of granites were investigated. A new methodology was proposed for the heterogeneity characterization of rocks at the grain-size level in numerical simulation. The thermo-mechanical constitutive law is developed by combining the temperature-dependent relations of granite properties with classical Mohr-Coulomb model with strain-softening and tension cut-off. The proposed modelling strategy is able to replicate the thermal induced cracking which results in reduced peak strength, pronounced softening and transition from brittle to ductile behaviour. Research results help to understand the damage mechanisms of granite caused by fire or other high temperature conditions, and can be used to develop guidelines for repair and maintenance as well as assessment of risks of tunnels and historical buildings after fire accidents
Quantitative insights into the transcritical mixture formation at diesel relevant conditions
Dies lieferte den Nachweis des Auftretens einphasiger Gemischbildung.:I Abbreviations and symbols

9. ReferencesHow do fuel and air mix, when liquid fuel is injected and atomized in an environment with parameters pressure and temperature exceeding the respective critical ones of the fuel? In this work, experiments on mixture formation at such conditions based on methods of Raman spectroscopy were performed. Objective of the work was the experimental proof of single-phase mixing, i.e. the transition of injected fuel into the supercritical regime, and therein mixture with the surrounding initially supercritical nitrogen atmosphere without the formation of phase boundaries. To this end, the characterization of the two-phase regime was necessary (i.e. the measurement of the vapor-liquid-equlibria), and the reliable determination of the temperature of the liquid phase during mixture formation.
Data on vapor-liquid-equilibria (VLE) were measured in a micro-capillary setup at high temperatures and pressures. To this end, phase-specific Raman spectra of the liquid and the vapor phase were measured at well-controlled conditions, from which the mixture composition of the respective phases was derived in-situ. Furthermore, Methods for the determination of the liquid phase temperature were developed, as well as an approach for the differentiation of the liquid phase signal from the vapor phase signal. The two latter methods exploit the specific signal of the hydroxyl-group of ethanol, which served as a fuel surrogate in this work.
In the next step, these methods were applied in a high pressure, high temperature injection chamber. Here, fuel was injected at realistic engine-like conditions, and Raman spectroscopy was applied temporally and spatially resolved across the created spray cone. This approach allowed the Investigation of the mixture formation without affecting the system, compared to e.g. the addition of markers or the use of invasive measurement techniques.
The gathered data are a significant addition to the scarce data base available in this pressure and temperature range. The realized micro-capillary setup needs only minimal volume of fluids, and allows various other operational Scenarios like the measurement of VLE data of other components, binary or ternary, or the Investigation of chemical reactions. Equilibria form very fast due to the high surface-to-volume ratio and the short path lenghts. The reliability of the gathered data were shown by comparison with literature.
With the presence of hydrogen bonds, the reliability and superiority of the Raman thermometry based on the 'integrated absolute difference spectroscopy' was shown. Furthermore, the characteristic Raman signal of the hydroxyl-group allows for the differentiation of the vapor- and liquid-phase contributions in superimposed spectra from vapor- and liquid-phase. For the proof of feasibility of such a differentiation, a sophisticated method for the phase-specific measurements was developed by exploiting distinctive trigger Signals from the phases, allowing measurements in one phase without cross-talk from the alternating phase.
The temporally and spatially resolved data measured during mixture formation in the spray lead to the thermodynamic characterization of the mixture formation with respect to the Parameters 'global mixture composition', 'liquid phase fraction', and 'liquid phase temperature'. The results for high pressures and temperatures inside the chamber show that the liquid or liquid-like phase can reach temperatures exceeding the critical temperature of the fuel. This provides the proof a the existance of single-phase mixing.:I Abbreviations and symbols

Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Particle Separation and Flow Behavior Inside an Induction Crucible Furnace

BibliographyDuring the continuous casting, non-metallic inclusions such as deoxidation or reoxidation products may arise in steel melt due to different reactions. These inclusions have to be removed from the melt with the aim of improving the cleanliness of steel products. There are many approaches in continuous casting to enhance inclusion removal from the melt. However, this Phd thesis focuses particularly on inclusion removal by reactive cleaning and active filtration during the melt casting in an induction crucible furnace using ceramic foam filter developed in CRC 920. For this purpose, a numerical model is developed in OpenFOAM in order to simulate the melt flow and reactive cleaning as well as active filtration. Besides the numerical model, an experimental water model are created to validate the capability of the numerical model to predict the recirculating turbulent flow in the induction crucible furnace. The results show that reactive cleaning and the formation of carbon monoxide bubbles, which arise on the inclusions, have a positive impact on the melt cleanliness. Reactive cleaning can improve inclusion removal and enhance the melt cleanliness sufficiently. Based on the results, one can conclude that the rate of inclusion removal in case of reactive cleaning is considerably higher than that in case of active filtration. Furthermore, the results indicate the considerable influence of filter position and filter number on the flow field as well as on the cleaning efficiency in the induction crucible furnace. Moreover, the results shows that turbulence modeling has a considerable impact on the prediction of the melt flow and inclusion dispersion in the induction crucible furnace.:Abstract

Global in time existence of Sobolev solutions to semi-linear damped sigma-evolution equations in L^q scales
The main goal of this thesis is to prove the global (in time) existence of small data Sobolev solutions to semi-linear damped σ-evolution equations from suitable function spaces basing on L^q spaces by mixing additional L^m regularity for the data on the basis of L^q-L^q estimates for solutions, with q∈(1,∞) and m∈[1,q), to the corresponding linear models. To establish desired results, we would like to apply the theory of modified Bessel functions, Faà di Bruno's formula and Mikhlin-Hörmander multiplier theorem in the treatment of linear problems. In addition, some of modern tools from Harmonic Analysis play a fundamental role to investigate results for the global existence of small data Sobolev solutions to semi-linear problems. Finally, the application of a modified test function method is to devote to the proof of blow-up results for semi-linear damped σ-evolution models, where σ≥1 and δ∈[0,σ) are assumed to be any fractional numbers
A production-optimized method of reducing cogging torque by magnet shifting using the example of a synchronous generator for small wind turbines with a rotor with inset surface magnets is proposed in this paper. On the basis of rotating field theory an analytical calculation model is developed taking into account the magnet shifting for determination of cogging torque. The analytical results are verified with FEM simulations. By experimental investigation of a manufactured prototype, the optimizing effect of magnet shifting is verified and compared to a rotor with symmetrically distributed poles. Finally, possible reasons for remaining discrepancies are identified and approaches for further considerations are presented
