    Get PDF
At first the aerodynamic performance of different configurations was measured with a force balance. In order to detect its effects before and after stall the angle of attack was varied during the experiments. For the configurations with increased aerodynamic performance additional experiments were carried out. The smoke wire visualization and stereo vision technique allowed a detailled insight in the flow around the NACA0020 profile and the flap movement. The results show that elastic flaps at the leading and trailing edge of the airfoil improve notably the airfoil performance in deep stall. Furthermore, the highest increase of the lift-to-drag ratio was achieved for the configuration with lowest bending stiffness. It was observed that the highest reduction of the turbulent separation region is caused by the flap movement. The increase of lift-to-drag ratio results from a slow upward and a fast downward motion of the elastic flap. The study delivers helpful information for transfer of the observed effect to other technical applications.:Abbildungsverzeichnis....................................................................... The friction process occurs in most structures, especially in contact between two faces with relative motion. The process of friction and abrasion affects the productivity and performance of equipment. In this study, the simulations and experimentations are formed to understand the friction and wear properties of hydraulic rubber seals. The tribometer test rig is developed to investigate rubber samples' friction and abrasion properties with different contact conditions. An observation structure to measure the contact area of the rubber sample also was constructed. The experiments are performed with different contact conditions (dry contact, wet contact, mud contact), different geometry of sample (half-cylinder, half-sphere), quite different contact directions (sliding direction axial and sliding direction lateral), fillet radius, contact angle or rubber material with different sliding velocities and normal forces. In addition, the contact process of rubber seals is simulated and equations for seal wear for the specific experimental conditions are formulated.:CHAPTER 1 Introduction .....................................................................................1 1.1 Motivation and objectives of the thesis…………….………..…..….........…….1 1.2 Structure of the dissertation.........................................................................3 CHAPTER 2 State of the Art………………………………………………...………....4 2.1 Water hydraulic seal.....................................................................................4 2.2 Fundamental tribology..................................................................................7 2.3 Experimental Investigation...........................................................................15 2.4 Simulation....................................................................................................19 CHAPTER 3 Test setup........................................................................................21 3.1 Tribometer test rig........................................................................................21 3.2 Setup for experimental investigation with rubber block……….........………...24 3.3 Setup for experimental investigation with a hydraulic seal………........……..32 3.4 Setup for Simulation………………………………………………..…................37 CHAPTER 4 Friction characteristics of the rubber block………………..…...….38 4.1 Influences on friction characteristic…………………………….…...........…….39 4.2 Test configuration and analysis of measured data…………………..............42 4.3 Results of experiments................................................................................44 4.4 Summary ……………………………………………….……………..............….58 CHAPTER 5 Experimental investigation with hydraulic seals……………….…..60 5.1 Test configuration…………………………………………………….................60 5.2 Result of experimental investigation ………………………….............………64 5.3 Summary…………………………………………………………..............…..….82 CHAPTER 6 Simulation…………………………………………….......……….…..83 6.1 Contact model………………………………………………….............………..83 6.2 Results of simulation……………………………………….…….............….…..85 6.3 Wear equation………………………………………………….............……...…94 6.4 Summary ………………………………………………………...............………102 CHAPTER 7 Conclusions and Recommendations …………….…………………..104 7.1 Summary and conclusion ……………………………………..................……104 7.2 Recommendations…………………….………………………............…….….108 References………………………………………………...…………….....……...…..10

    Colourings of P5P_5-free graphs

For a set of graphs H, we call a graph G H-free if G-S is non-isomorphic to H for each S⊆V(G) and each H∈H. Let f_H^* ∶N_(>0)↦N_(>0 )be the optimal χ-binding function of the class of H-free graphs, that is, f_H^* (ω)=max⁡{χ(G): ω(G)=ω,G is H-free} where χ(G),ω(G) denote the chromatic number and clique number of G, respectively. In this thesis, we mostly determine optimal χ-binding functions for subclasses of P_5-free graphs, where P_5 denotes the path on 5 vertices. For multiple subclasses we are able to determine them exactly and for others we prove the right order of magnitude. To achieve those results we prove structural results for the graph classes and determine colourings. We sometimes obtain those results by researching the prime graphs and combining the two decomposition methods by homogeneous sets and clique-separators. Additionally, we use the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem and analyse the neighbourhood of holes. For some of these subclasses we characterise all graphs G with χ(G)>χ(G-\{u\}), for each u∈V(G) and use those to determine the function

Development of Process Models for Multiphase Processes in the Pore Space of a Filter Cake based on 3D Information

Reliable information about the micro-processes during filtration and dewatering of filter cakes allows more accurate statements about process development and design in any industrial application with solid-liquid separation units. Distributed particle properties such as shape, size, and material influence the formation of the porous network structure, which can show considerable local fluctuations in vertical and horizontal alignment in the cake forming apparatus. The present work relates to a wide range of particle sizes and particle shapes and presents their effects on integral, but preferably local, structural parameters of cake filtration. Current models for the relationship between particle properties and resulting porous structure remain inaccurate. Therefore, the central question focus on the model-based correlation between obtained tomographic 3D information and characteristic cake and process parameters. In combination with X-ray computed tomography and microscopy (ZEISS Xradia 510), data acquisition of the structural build-up of filter cakes is possible on a small scale (filter area 0.2 cm²) and a conventional laboratory scale (filter area 20 cm², VDI 2762 pressure nutsch). Thereby, the work focuses on structural parameters at the local level before, during, and after cake dewatering, such as porosity, coordination number, three-phase contact angle, characteristics of pores and isolated liquid regions, the liquid load of individual particles, tortuosity, and capillary length, and the corresponding spatial distributions. Seven different particle systems in the range of 20 and 500 µm, suspended in aqueous solutions with additives for contrast enhancement, served as raw materials for the filter cake formation. Image data processing from 16-bit greyscale images with a resolution of 2 to 4 µm/voxel edge length includes various operations with a two-stage segmentation to identify air, solid particles, and liquid phase, resulting in a machine learning-based automated approach. Subsequent modeling and correlation of measured parameters rely on experimentally verified quantities from mercury porosimetry, laser diffraction, dynamic image analysis, static and dynamic droplet contour analysis, as well as filtration and capillary pressure tests according to VDI guidelines. The tomography measurements provide microscopic information about the porous system, quantified using characteristic key parameters and distribution functions. By studying the cake structure concerning the local distribution of particle size and shape and the resulting porosity, segregation effects can be avoided by increasing the feed concentration of particles, whereby swarm inhibition of particles in the initial suspension strongly hinders or completely suppresses layer formation in the cake according to distributed particle properties (Publication A). In the subsequent dewatering of the filter cake to the irreducible saturation, the measurement of the local coordination number as well as the remaining liquid volumes at the particle contacts allows the determination of a discrete liquid load distribution by correlation with the respective particle volume (Publication B). The determination of the capillary length - shortest capillary for single-phase pore flow and capillary of least resistance for multiphase pore flow - provides modeling approaches for the cake formation from publication A as well as the dewatering process from publication B (Publication C). The parameter sets obtained also help to transfer and extend existing, theoretical models of multiphase pore flow to the application example of filter cake dewatering (Publication D). At the microscopic level, the measurement of the three-phase contact angle at isolated liquid volumes within the porous matrix provides a deeper understanding of the macroscopic models from publications C and D (Publication E).:List of Figures List of Tables Notation 1 Introduction 2 Multiphase Processes in Porous Media 2.1 Cake Filtration and Single Phase Porous Media Flow 2.2 Cake Dewatering 2.2.1 Particle Surface Wettability 2.2.2 Capillarity in Porous Media 2.2.3 Static Capillary Pressure 2.2.4 Dynamic Capillary Pressure 3 Acquisition of 3D Information of Porous Media 3.1 Absorption and Scattering of X-rays 3.2 X-ray Microscopy 3.2.1 Image Acquisition 3.2.2 Image Reconstruction 3.2.3 Image Quality and Artifacts 3.3 Image Post-Processing 3.3.1 Image Enhancement 3.3.2 Segmentation and Thresholding 3.3.3 Processing Binary Images 3.4 Image Measurement 4 Materials and Methods 4.1 The Solid Phase 4.2 The Liquid Phase 4.3 Suspension Stability 4.4 Experimental Design and Down-Scale for Tomography Measurements 4.5 Experimental Characterization of Filtration and Dewatering Properties 4.5.1 Cake Filtration 4.5.2 Cake Dewatering (Capillary Pressure Measurements) 5 Conclusion and Outlook Literature Publications A to E Appendi

Refinement of Raman spectra from extreme background and noise interferences: Cancer diagnostics using Raman spectroscopy

State of the art of the purification of Raman spectra 2.1 Experimental methods for the enhancement of the signal-to-background ratio and the signal-to-noise ratio 2.2 Mathematical methods for the extraction of pure Raman spectra from raw spectra 2.3 Raman based cancer diagnostics 2.4 Neural networks for the evaluation of Raman spectra 2.5 Objective 3 Application relevant fundaments 3.1 Basics of Raman spectroscopy 3.2 Simulation of raw Raman spectra 3.3 Shifted-excitation Raman difference Spectroscopy 3.4 Raman experimental setup 3.5 Mathematical method for Raman spectra refinement 3.6 Deep neural networks 4 Summary of the published results 4.1 A shifted-excitation Raman difference spectroscopy evaluation strategy for the efficient isolation of Raman spectra from extreme fluorescence interference 4.2 Vector casting for noise reduction 4.3 Refinement of spectra using a deep neural network; fully automated removal of noise and background 4.4 Breast Tumor Analysis using Shifted Excitation Raman difference Spectroscopy 4.5 Optical diagnosis of clinically apparent lesions of oral cavity by label free Raman spectroscopy ConclusionRaman spectroscopy is an optical measurement technique able to provide spectroscopic information that is molecule-specific and unique to the nature of the specimen under investigation. It is an invaluable analytical tool that finds application in several fields such as medicine and in situ chemical processing. Due to its high specificity and label-free features, Raman spectroscopy greatly impacted cancer diagnostics. However, retrieving and interpreting the Raman spectrum that contains the molecular information is challenging because of extreme background interference. I have developed various spectra-processing approaches required to purify Raman spectra from noisy and heavily background interfered raw Raman spectra. In detail, these are a new noise reduction method based on vector casting and new deep neural networks for the efficient removal of noise and background. Several neural network models were trained on simulated spectra and then tested with experimental spectra. The here proposed approaches were compared with the state-of-the-art techniques via different signal-to-noise ratios, standard deviation, and the structural similarity index metric. The methods presented here perform well and are superior in comparison to what has been reported before, especially at small signal-to-noise ratios, and for extreme fluorescence interfered raw Raman spectra. Furthermore, the deep neural network-based methods do not rely on any human intervention. The motivation behind this study is to make Raman spectroscopy, especially the shifted-excitation Raman difference spectroscopy (SERDS), an even better tool for process analytics and cancer diagnostics. The integration of the above-mentioned spectra-processing approaches into SERDS in combination with machine learning tools enabled the differentiation between physiological mucosa, non-malignant lesions, and oral squamous cell carcinomas with high accuracy, above the state of the art. The distinguishable features obtained in the purified Raman spectra are assignable to different chemical compositions of the respective tissues. The feasibility of a similar approach for breast tumors was also investigated. The purified Raman spectra of normal breast tissue, fibroadenoma, and invasive carcinoma were discriminable with respect to the spectral features of proteins, lipids, and nucleic acid. These findings suggest the potential of SERDS combined with machine learning techniques as a universal tool for cancer diagnostics.:Versicherung Abstract Zusammenfassung der Ergebnisse der Dissertation Table of Contents Abbreviations and symbols 1 Introduction 2 State of the art of the purification of Raman spectra 2.1 Experimental methods for the enhancement of the signal-to-background ratio and the signal-to-noise ratio 2.2 Mathematical methods for the extraction of pure Raman spectra from raw spectra 2.3 Raman based cancer diagnostics 2.4 Neural networks for the evaluation of Raman spectra 2.5 Objective 3 Application relevant fundaments 3.1 Basics of Raman spectroscopy 3.2 Simulation of raw Raman spectra 3.3 Shifted-excitation Raman difference Spectroscopy 3.4 Raman experimental setup 3.5 Mathematical method for Raman spectra refinement 3.6 Deep neural networks 4 Summary of the published results 4.1 A shifted-excitation Raman difference spectroscopy evaluation strategy for the efficient isolation of Raman spectra from extreme fluorescence interference 4.2 Vector casting for noise reduction 4.3 Refinement of spectra using a deep neural network; fully automated removal of noise and background 4.4 Breast Tumor Analysis using Shifted Excitation Raman difference Spectroscopy 4.5 Optical diagnosis of clinically apparent lesions of oral cavity by label free Raman spectroscopy Conclusio

SEM-Based Automated Mineralogy and Its Application in Geo- and Material Sciences

    Get PDF
Scanning electron microscopy based automated mineralogy (SEM-AM) is a combined analytical tool initially designed for the characterisation of ores and mineral processing products. Measurements begin with the collection of backscattered electron (BSE) images and their handling with image analysis software routines. Subsequently, energy dispersive X-ray spectra (EDS) are gained at selected points according to the BSE image adjustments. Classification of the sample EDS spectra against a list of approved reference EDS spectra completes the measurement. Different classification algorithms and four principal SEM-AM measurement routines for point counting modal analysis, particle analysis, sparse phase search and EDS spectral mapping are offered by the relevant software providers. Application of SEM-AM requires a high-quality preparation of samples. Suitable non-evaporating and electron-beam stable epoxy resin mixtures and polishing of relief-free surfaces in particles and materials with very different hardness are the main challenges. As demonstrated by case examples in this contribution, the EDS spectral mapping methods appear to have the most promising potential for novel applications in metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary petrology, ore fingerprinting, ash particle analysis, characterisation of slags, forensic sciences, archaeometry and investigations of stoneware and ceramics. SEM-AM allows the quantification of the sizes, geometries and liberation of particles with different chemical compositions within a bulk sample and without previous phase separations. In addition, a virtual filtering of bulk particle samples by application of numerous filter criteria is possible. For a complete mineral phase identification, X-ray diffraction data should accompany the EDS chemical analysis. Many of the materials which potentially could be characterised by SEM-AM consist of amorphous and glassy phases. In such cases, the generic labelling of reference EDS spectra and their subsequent target component grouping allow SEM-AM for interesting and novel studies on many kinds of solid and particulate matter which are not feasible by other analytical methods

Weitere Möglichkeiten der Auswertung werden aufgezeigt, die durch die nichtlineare Parameterschätzung möglich werden, darunter die Auswertung von Experimenten bei variablem Druck, die Bestimmung des Kuchenwiderstands kompressibler Feststoffsysteme sowie eine Bewertung der anfänglichen Verblockungsvorgänge am Filtermedium.:1 Introduction 2 Cake Filtration Theory 2.1 Historical Development 2.2 Derivation of the Cake Filtration Equation 2.3 Fit Procedures for Cake Filtration Data 2.4 Additional Methods for Finding the Time Offset 3 Materials and Methods 3.1 Materials 3.2 Filter Medium 3.3 Laboratory Pressure Filters 3.4 Example Dataset 3.5 Preparation of Example Dataset 3.6 Residual Plots and Chi-Squares 3.7 Bootstrapped Statistics 4 Proposed Fit Procedure 4.1 Nonlinear Regression 4.2 Region of Best Fit 5 Results and Discussion 5.1 Constant-Pressure Filtration 5.2 Hermans & Bredée Models 5.3 Residual Plots of Fit Results 5.4 Nonconstant Filtration 5.5 Compressibility Effects 5.6 Optimal Parameter Definition 5.7 The Role of the t/V-V-Diagram 6 Conclusions 7 Outlook 7.1 Constant-Flux Filtration 7.2 Inline Resistance Measurements 7.3 Parameter Estimation in Chemical Engineering A Appendix A.1 The Concentration Parameter A.2 Obsolete Fit Methods A.3 Residual Statistics A.4 Bootstrapped Statistics Data A.5 Fit Example in Microsoft Excel A.6 Experimental Data and Metadata B ReferencesThis thesis presents nonlinear parameter estimation as an alternative method for the evaluation of cake filtration experiments. A dataset of 225 constant-pressure filtration experiments is used to highlight the advantages of this method compared to the widely used evaluation method which uses a linear transformation of the cake filtration equation. The goodness-of-fit is tested through the means of residual plots, which are introduced and discussed. The difference in results for the two methods for the specific cake resistance parameter, which is the most important parameter in the dimensioning of filtration apparatused, lies between 5 and 15%. Further possibilities of evaluation are presented, which become possible through the use of nonlinear parameter estimation, such as: evaluation of filtration experiments with nonconstant pressure, the determination of cake resistances for compressible systems, and the investigation of the processes present in the beginning stages of cake filtration.:1 Introduction 2 Cake Filtration Theory 2.1 Historical Development 2.2 Derivation of the Cake Filtration Equation 2.3 Fit Procedures for Cake Filtration Data 2.4 Additional Methods for Finding the Time Offset 3 Materials and Methods 3.1 Materials 3.2 Filter Medium 3.3 Laboratory Pressure Filters 3.4 Example Dataset 3.5 Preparation of Example Dataset 3.6 Residual Plots and Chi-Squares 3.7 Bootstrapped Statistics 4 Proposed Fit Procedure 4.1 Nonlinear Regression 4.2 Region of Best Fit 5 Results and Discussion 5.1 Constant-Pressure Filtration 5.2 Hermans & Bredée Models 5.3 Residual Plots of Fit Results 5.4 Nonconstant Filtration 5.5 Compressibility Effects 5.6 Optimal Parameter Definition 5.7 The Role of the t/V-V-Diagram 6 Conclusions 7 Outlook 7.1 Constant-Flux Filtration 7.2 Inline Resistance Measurements 7.3 Parameter Estimation in Chemical Engineering A Appendix A.1 The Concentration Parameter A.2 Obsolete Fit Methods A.3 Residual Statistics A.4 Bootstrapped Statistics Data A.5 Fit Example in Microsoft Excel A.6 Experimental Data and Metadata B Reference
