Data collection of rental bikes using a low power self-sufficient multisensorplatform
To evaluate the readiness and suitability of cities for autonomous vehicles, environmental data is essential. The collection of various types of information contributes to the creation of maps that robots can use for navigation. Such measurements are gathered by electronic devices, including modern cars or public transportation systems. However, many frequently used routes beyond public roads are not tracked. This results in blind spots that may still be relevant for small self-driving systems. Using rental bikes to collect data in these areas allows for denser and more reliable data sets. Therefore, bikes are equipped with self-sufficient low-power sensor systems that acquire data on speed, ground quality, positional tracking, and obstacle detection. NarrowBand-Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is used to transmit the data collected to cloud services. Through the use of efficient algorithms and low-power modules, system up-time can exceed eight years. When different data transmission strategies are compared, the amount of data transmitted per battery charge can more than double. Data collected from multiple rental bikes provides valuable insight through route and sensor data comparison. Over extended periods, commonly used paths can be identified
Numerical Modelling of Deep Geological Nuclear Waste Repositories in Clay Rock and the Impact of Gas on Variably Saturated Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Processes
This thesis is of the cumulative form, i.e. four peer-reviewed journal publications documenting the research are presented here (see appendices D through G).
The sections leading up to the journal publications aim to provide a framework and context for the reader, in which the aforementioned journal publications should be seen: Eyes set on this goal, the thesis starts out by introducing the context of deep geological disposal of heat generating nuclear waste in argillaceous host rock formations, the particularities of argillites as host rock as well as the modelling concept including the theory of porous media. Next, a derivation and discussion of the principal partial differential equations governing the conservation of mass, energy and momentum as well as of constitutive laws is provided. A discussion and conclusion are presented in order to finalise the framing of this thesis.
The research questions in this thesis have three focus points: First, the validity (and limits of validity) of the given thermo-hydro-mechanical conceptual modelling approaches and associated assumptions is explored. Second, the numerical implementations are thoroughly tested and demonstrated. Third, the system behaviour of deep geological repositories in argillaceous host rocks is investigated.:List of Figures IV

Short overview on combustion systems scale-up with emphasis on NOx emissions of gas-fired furnaces
Historically, scale- up of technologies have been a fundamental driver for success-ful economies in enhancing performance of applications. In the context of com-bustion technologies, several scale- up approaches were developed with the aim of transferring relevant characteristics of combustion systems from laboratory- to industrial- scale system. A reasonable selection of scaling approaches is required to perform a proper scaling of a combustion system. In the current study, the development of scaling methods and their use for technical applications is pre-sented. In order to provide a guideline for the examination of combustion systems to be scaled up, common and recently published scale- up methods are compared qualitatively, as well as the investigation on scale- up of combustion chambers, is addressed. Due to the expected further technical and environmental restrictions, the focus of the implementation is directed towards NOx emissions
Approach to analytical evaluation of different coreless winding segments for an axial flux motor
Differently arranged winding segments, which are part of a coreless stator of an axial-flux-permanent magnet synchronous motor with a double rotor, are evaluated. The copper mass and the Lorentz force are calculated analytically under defined conditions and the result of the analytically calculated Lorentz force is adjusted simulatively
