    Rice save Japan

    Get PDF
The land and climate in most part of Japan are suitable for rice cultivation. Rice plants can grow in the paddy field condition,in which roots are exposed to anoxic environments. Due to its soil chemical characteristics, paddy field has high productivity and crop production in paddy field is extremely sustainable. One of the environmental factors which reduce yield or quality of rice in Japan is temperature in summertime,in which rice grains are filled. Extreme high temperatures cause male sterility. Though not so high temperature, daily temperature higher than 25 ℃ cause chalky kernels, which reduce the market value of rice. Researchers are working for developing tolerant varieties and technologies which reduce the occurrence of chalky kernels.departmental bulletin pape

A technique to produce sweet watermelon

    Get PDF
To investigate the effects of night-time temperature on cell and fruit size, and sugar accumulation in watermelon fruit, fruits were treated with high night-time temperature in a greenhouse. The minimum night-time ambient temperature of the heating box (18℃) was approximately 6℃ higher than that of the control. The length, diameter and weight of heat-treated fruit at the end of heating treatment,16 days after anthesis (DAA),were greater than that of control fruit, but those at harvesting,42 DAA,were almost the same in both treatments. Mean cell size of the outer portion of heat-treated fruit at 16 DAA were significantly larger than that of the control. Cell size of the fruits at 42 DAA did not differ between heat-treated and control fruit. Sucrose, glucose and fructose content of fruit at 16 DAA did not differ between heat-treated and control fruit. However, sucrose content of the outer portion of heat-treated fruit was 175% of that of control fruit at 42 DAA. Glucose and fructose contents were lower in heat-treated fruit than in control fruit. It is recommended to maintain the night temperature during the former half of fruit development above approximately 20℃.departmental bulletin pape

Utilization of high vitamin E content in whole crop rice silage for producing high quality beef and milk

    Get PDF
The consumption of rice has decreased and the amount of imported feed increased to produce animal products for last fifty years, which resulted in low self-sufficiency in food in Japan. The self-sufficiency dropped from more than 70% in 1960 to 40% in 2010. To improve the self-sufficiency in food,it is important to produce animal feeds in paddy fields in Japan. Whole crop rice silage is produced in more than 10,000 ha of paddy fields in Japan. The production will increase. It has the characteristics to contain higher vitamin E than the other feeds. The vitamin E content in beef produced by feeding whole crop rice silage was found to be higher than that in beef produced by feeding the other feeds such as rice straw to fattening steers. The higher vitamin E can prevent oxidation of fat in beef. It also can reduce the production of metmyoglobin by oxidation of myoglobin, which results in smaller change of color from red to brown in beef. Feeding whole crop rice silage to lactating dairy cows also increased vitamin E content in milk. These findings show the potential to produce higher quality beef and milk by feeding whole crop rice silage.departmental bulletin pape

Variation of Foods and Plant Breeding

    Get PDF
Our ancestors had made better use of plant resources. At first, they gathered plants, fruits, shells and some other materials for their foods. Then they settled in the land suitable for farming and started their agricultural life. They cultivated a large number of new crops and some of them are used in our time. Many foreign crops were introduced to Japan and cultivated in many parts of the country. Through the process of cultivation, many local varieties were developed and used for the materials of local foods.Since Mendelian laws were rediscovered, many modern varieties were improved in Japan. In 1970s,overproduction of rice became a social problem. At the same time, small number of newly improved varieties were distributed over a wide area (monoculture) and drove out the local varieties which contributed to the maintenance of a long-established tradition. “ Food culture is supported by agriculture.” So,monoculture in agriculture will be resulted in simplification of our long-established tradition in the future.departmental bulletin pape

Japan’s participation with the TPP will collapse food security in Asian countries

    Get PDF
This paper will show by economic and statistical analyses how Japan’s participation to the TPP deteriorates Japanese agriculture, especially rice sector, and decreases tremendously rice self-sufficiency of Japan. This is collapse of food security of Japan. Consequently,Japanese rice import must increase greatly,by the amount of about 7 million tons. This amount is considerably large in the special world rice trade market isolated in monsoon Asia on the globe. Thus,Japan’s large rice import will lead to a sharp rise in the world rice price by more than 100 percent. Rice is an important staple food for Asian people among which about 6 billion people are in the condition of hunger now. My economic and statistical calculation shows that this sharp increase in the world rice price will increase the hungry by 2.7 billion. This is collapse of food security in Asian countries. Based on these analyses,I believe that Japan should not participate with the TPP.departmental bulletin pape
