Understanding Changes in Marine Communities Through a Discretized, Size-Structured Matrix Model
We study a discretized, size-structured matrix model which calculates population in a marine community over time. A portion of this model is a discretized version of the McKendrick-von Foerster equation, so we spend some time studying the process of discretizing that equation. We implement a mini model containing 10 size categories instead of the original 50, and we looked at how the marine community behaves over 40 years. We discuss some of the challenges when implementing this model
Modifying an Ergosterol Extraction Protocol to Quantify Fungal Biomass at the University of Minnesota-Morris
In aquatic ecosystems, fungi play an essential role in decomposing leaves and making nutrients available to other organisms such as invertebrates and detritivores. Therefore, it is useful to quantify the amount of fungal biomass growing on submerged leaves, and this quantity can be estimated by measuring the chemical ergosterol, which is found only in fungi. Gessner (2005) developed an ergosterol extraction protocol using lipid extraction, purification with solid-phase extraction (SPE), and analysis with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). However, not all of the equipment mentioned in the protocol was available at the University of Minnesota-Morris. Traveling Tropes: Race, Reconstruction, and Southern Redemption in \u3ci\u3eThe Story of Evangelina Cisneros\u3c/i\u3e
This essay considers the entanglement of race, gender, and imperialism in U.S. discourse on Evangelina Cisneros, a white Cuban woman imprisoned in a Havana jail during her country’s final War for Independence from Spain (1895–1898). I argue that, an event historically tied to the colony’s abolition of slavery, Cuban Independence in writings about Cisneros becomes discursively imbricated with the reconsolidation of white supremacy in the U.S. South following the Civil War. The study establishes a dialogue between U.S. discourse on the events published in the late 1890s – the articles on the affair that appeared in The New York Journal and the multi-authored book The Story of Evangelina Cisneros (1897) – and Southern white supremacist author Thomas Dixon, Jr.’s Trilogy of Reconstruction (1902–1907) in order to explore the ways in which the Evangelina Cisneros text network mobilizes racial and gender paradigms typically associated with post-Reconstruction Southern “Redeemer” thinking
Anion Removal by Partially Positive Adsorbents
Nitrates and phosphates exist naturally but are present in elevated concentrations in many areas primarily due to agriculture; these elevated concentrations are concerning for human and environmental health. The project considered the ability of four different materials used for adsorption (adsorbents) to adsorb nitrate and phosphate. All adsorbents had a silica base with an amine (NH2) group and were further functionalized with different ligands consisting of an aromatic ring functionalized with electron withdrawing groups, creating a partial positive environment to help attract the anions of interest. We also synthesized control materials to determine how effective our engineered materials are. The controls are the base silica, silica functionalized with an amine group, and materials further functionalized with an aromatic group that is not electron deficient. The goal of this project was to confirm adsorption of nitrate and phosphate to positively charged adsorbents for their extraction from aqueous solutions. The materials were designed, synthesized and properly characterized. The materials must be tested for their adsorbent ability via a contact test in a known contaminant solution, which is currently underway. If results suggest that the adsorbents work sufficiently at removing contaminants, the implications of this project could provide a removal pathway for the anionic contaminants from aquatic solutions.https://digitalcommons.morris.umn.edu/urs_2021/1002/thumbnail.jp
