    Solvation Properties of Persistent Organic Pollutants and the Relationship to the Bioconcentration Factor

    Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a class of substances that can cause major health issues in humans and other animals alike. They are difficult to track through the environment and even more difficult to remove. One of the ways in which we can learn more about these compounds is through the bioconcentration factor (BCF). Little work has been done to differentiate the effects of POP stereoisomers and degradation products on human populations, flora, and fauna. For this work, the selected POPs included Aldrin and related compounds, Chlordane and related compounds, Endosulfan and related compounds, and Hexabromocyclododecane. To learn more about the BCF of the selected compounds, the SMD solvent model was used to find the octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow) and the olive oil-water partition coefficient (Kvow). The basis set used was 6-31G (d) and the B3LYP density functional. A linear regression was performed to investigate the potential relationship between the Kv/ow and BCF. Other molecules with known BCF values were also used to strengthen the regression. This regression showed a potential correlation between the Kv/ow and the BCF that would be strengthened by more information about the BCF of POPs

    Climate on the Blanca Massif, Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Colorado, USA, during the Last Glacial Maximum

    Temperature-index modeling is used to determine the magnitude of temperature depression on the Blanca Massif, Colorado, required to maintain steady-state mass balances of nine reconstructed glaciers at their extent during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The mean temperature depression thus determined is ~8.6 +0.7/−0.9 degrees C where the uncertainties account for those inherent in the glacier reconstructions, in model parameters (e.g., melt factors), and possible modest changes in LGM precipitation. Associated equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) exhibit a statistically significant directional dependency being lower toward the north and east. Under the assumption that regional temperature change was uniform, required changes in precipitation vary systematically—also exhibiting a directional dependency coinciding with that in ELAs—and indicate increases (over modern) occurred on the eastern side of the massif while decreases occurred on the western side. This disparity represents a strengthening of a precipitation asymmetry, particularly winter precipitation, which exists today. The modern precipitation asymmetry may be a consequence of snow being blown over to the eastern side of the massif (advective transport) by southwesterly flow. Intensification of this flow during the LGM would have enhanced advection, and augmented snow accumulation on glaciers, thus explaining the lower ELAs and increased precipitation on that side of the massi

    Understanding Metrics of Stress in the Context of Invasion History: the Case of the Brown Treesnake (Boiga irregularis)

    Invasive species can exert rapid depletion of resources after introduction and, in turn, affect their own population density. Additionally, management actions can have direct and indirect effects on demography. Physiological variables can predict demographic change but are often restricted to snapshots-in-time and delayed confirmation of changes in population density reduces their utility. To evaluate the relationships between physiology and demography, we assessed metrics of individual and demographic stress (baseline and 1-h corticosterone (CORT), body condition and bacterial killing ability) in the invasive snake Boiga irregularis on Guam collected in intervals of 10–15 years. We also assessed potential discrepancies between different methods of measuring hormones [radioimmunoassay (RIA) versus enzyme immunoassay (EIA)]. The magnitude of difference between RIA and EIA was negligible and did not change gross interpretation of our results. We found that body condition was higher in recent samples (2003 and 2018) versus older (1992–93) samples. We found corresponding differences in baseline CORT, with higher baseline CORT in older, poorer body condition samples. Hormonal response to acute stress was higher in 2018 relative to 2003. We also found a weak relationship between circulating CORT and bacterial killing ability among 2018 samples, but the biological significance of the relationship is not clear. In an effort to develop hypotheses for future investigation of the links between physiology and demography in this and other systems, we discuss how the changes in CORT and body condition may reflect changes in population dynamics, resource availability or management pressure. Ultimately, we advocate for the synchronization of physiology and management studies to advance the field of applied conservation physiology

    The Imperial State of Iran, a Deal-Broker: Enabling the People\u27s Republic of China\u27s Asian Games Debut in the 1974 Tehran Asian Games

    The former Imperial State of Iran was a critical actor and deal-broker in orchestrating the Asian Games Federation’s admission of the All-China Sports Federation and expulsion of the Republic of China Olympic Committee in 1973 and enabling China’s Asian Games debut in Tehran in September 1974. Notably, it achieved this disruptive and historic outcome largely through offering good offices and adhering to institutionalism. In particular, Iran convinced the IOC to retain its patronage to the AGF and facilitated fruitful negotiations between the People’s Republic of China and the international sport governing bodies to ensure the issuance of event permits. Despite the occasionally provocative statements of Iranian officials against the IOC and IFs while playing the role of communist China’s advocate, Tehran also managed to persuade Beijing to make seemingly small but actually critical comprises while interacting with international governing bodies. These compromises proved essential to China’s eventual rehabilitation in international sport
