Get PDFIn recent years the life stories of early modern women artists have inspired many works of biofiction; yet often authors know more about what the artists created than the facts of their lives. This essay will explore the intermediality between visual and verbal content by exploring the role of art in two recent novels on the Italian Renaissance painter Sofonisba Anguissola: Donna DiGiuseppe’s Lady in Ermine: The Story of a Woman Who Painted the Renaissance and Chiara Montani’s Sofonisba: Portraits of the Soul. In the process I will explore the Renaissance paragone debate and consider how verbal descriptions of artworks may (or may not) enhance our understanding of the artist’s fictionalized character
A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words: László Moholy-Nagy and the Photobook
Get PDFIn this paper with a corresponding visual exhibition, I will examine the Hungarian modern artist László Moholy-Nagy\u27s 1925 photobook Malerei Fotografie Film (Painting Photography Film) and his optical theories about how technology can impact human perception of time and motion. I will also investigate Moholy-Nagy\u27s influence on other important photobooks of the era, such as Franz Roh and Jan Tschichold\u27s Photo Eye: 76 Photos of the Time, and the important 1929 Film und Foto (Film and Photography) exhibition, known as FiFo, in Stuttgart, Germany. I will draw particularly on Pepper Stetler\u27s 2015 book Stop Reading! Look! Modern Vision and the Weimar Photographic Book in order to discuss the significance of Moholy-Nagy\u27s work and ideas within the context of the genre of photobook, a new type of book in which photographs were dominant and integrated with text that emerged in the 1920s, and the important FiFo exhibition that showcased Moholy-Nagy\u27s ideas
Using Temporal Session Types to Analyze Time Complexities of Concurrent Programs

Specifically, they use a family of datatypes called session types; these constrain the structure of interactions that may take place over a channel of communication. In Das’s system, the timing properties of an algorithm can be verified by a typechecker: if the timing information in the session types is mismatched, the computer will report a type error. Intrusion Attacks on Automotive CAN and Their Detection
Get PDFThe main highway of communication in a vehicle is the Controller Area Network, commonly known by the acronym CAN. Any vulnerability in this network could allow bad actors to block communication between vehicle subsystems, risking the safety of the vehicle’s occupants. With the ever growing list of vulnerabilities being exposed in the CAN, it is critical to address its safety. This paper looks at one of the known vulnerabilities in the data link layer of the CAN and an Intrusion Detection System that could detect attacks on this network. We detail a few processes of the CAN, arbitration and error states, and how they are leveraged during different attacks. We also explain the core component of the Intrusion Detection System, the Detection Engine, and discuss testing results
Environmental Political Theory: Georgia
Get PDFPerceptions of the environment are based on individuals’ experiences and values. This work, in the subfield of environmental political theory, seeks to understand why people hold the environmental beliefs that they do. Through a literature review, the beliefs of two hypothetical citizens of the country of Georgia were deduced based on the economic, political, and environmental history of Georgia. I hypothesized the likely values and experiences of an Azeri pharmacist and Georgian casino dealer, concluding that the power structure of Georgia would privilege the Georgian casino dealer. The Azeri pharmacist is likely of a lower socioeconomic status, is more tied to the land and environment, and is thus more concerned for the environment. The Georgian casino dealer is of a middle socioeconomic status and concerned with economic growth, perhaps at the expense of the environment. This latter opinion is also that of Georgia as a nation; the country is more occupied with economic than environmental concerns. This analysis provides a theoretical framework to understand tangible problems. For example, it is easier to argue for sustainable policies with knowledge of the values and beliefs of one’s audience.https://digitalcommons.morris.umn.edu/urs_2022/1001/thumbnail.jp
