    Stevens County Food Assessment

    Get PDF
This report is the culmination of a year-long community food assessment conducted by staff, students, and faculty at the University of Minnesota Morris, and informed by an advisory council made up of key local stakeholders. The main goal of the community food assessment is to describe food security in Stevens County at both community and individual scales. This assessment examines what food is grown in the county, what food is available, where food can be obtained in various forms, accessibility and affordability of food, as well as county residents’ experiences with and thoughts and suggestions about food. Findings summarized below rely on several different types of data, including a household food security survey, a survey of prices and availability at area grocery stores, personal communications and observations, and secondary data (e.g., from the US Census Bureau). More details about data collection and the key findings presented below are available in the full version of this report. Based on the (available and newly collected) data for this community food assessment, it is clear that Stevens County does not fit the definition of community food security because many residents are food insecure, food insecure residents tend to share characteristics of marginalized populations, and little of the food consumed in Stevens County is produced and processed in Stevens County. Challenges with community food security are of course not necessarily uniquely to Stevens County, MN as they are at least in part a product of the way our regional, national, and global food supply chains presently function.https://digitalcommons.morris.umn.edu/cst/1083/thumbnail.jp

Scheduling Aircraft Departures to Avoid Enroute Congestion

    Get PDF
When scheduled flights are forecast to overcrowd sections of enroute airspace, an air traffic control authority may need to delay departures. Mixed integer linear programming can be used to compute a schedule that resolves the congestion while bringing the sum of all delays to a minimum. Standard linear programming constraint formulations for such scheduling problems, however, have poor run times for instances of realistic size. A new constraint formulation based on cycles and paths through a route graph reduces run times in computational experiments. It shows particularly strong performance for schedules that approach the worst-case solution times in standard formulations

The Effects of Expectation Violations in the Workplace: Why Do Fresh Graduates and New Employees Leave?

    Get PDF
For years, recent graduates and new employees have been faced with a work environment that is different from their expectations when they first choose a job or enter the workforce. The factors that new employees perceive as violating their expectations in the workplace may cause employees to lose interest in their careers, decrease job satisfaction, lose the momentum of completing work, and even wish to leave their jobs. This study was conducted through a questionnaire and quantitative analysis, applying expectancy violations theory (EVT) to recent graduates and new employers who are preparing or just starting their careers. Both the participants’ satisfaction levels with various components of their expectations and the impact of these on the likelihood of announcing their decision to leave their jobs are investigated in the questionnaire. Although there are some limitations to the questionnaire distribution, the data analyzed from the survey results indicate that people’s expectations of various factors in the workplace do influence their decision to terminate their careers. Salary and compensation and opportunities for promotions in the workplace ranked first and second, respectively. At the same time, the article offers some insights for new job seekers or recent graduates who are about to become new job seekers. The goal is to increase the recognition and awareness of expectation violation, as well as its relationship to job satisfaction and performance, ultimately helping fresh graduates and new hires reduce the negative impact of expectation violation.https://digitalcommons.morris.umn.edu/urs_2022/1003/thumbnail.jp
