    No full text
‘Geese Laying Eggs Moon’, ‘maǧá okáda wí’, is the month of April. When the Geese came back to lay their eggs, this is when spring would typically start which is why Dakota peoples referred to it as ‘Geese Laying Eggs Moon’. Illustration of a goose sitting on a nest with eggs underneath it, against a yellow circular background, representing the moon. The nest is made from twigs and grass.https://digitalcommons.morris.umn.edu/calendar_posters/1003/thumbnail.jp

    Four Left Feet

This piece was written for the creative study of post-production soundtrack composition. For material to accompany, I browsed an archive of three-minute vintage videos with their sound disabled until I found this charmingly goofy 1950’s appliance advertisement featuring a man and woman dancing. This piece plays off the commercial’s speculatively brittle choreography and oddball on-screen chemistry. Its driving force is, therefore, a unique performance inspired by familiar dance elements… strung together and along with both spontaneity and product placement, suggesting its true presentational nature

Music Genre Classification Capabilities of Enhanced Neural Network Architectures

    Get PDF
With the increase of digital music audio uploads, applications that deal with music information have been widely requested by streaming platforms. Automatic music genre classification is an important function of music recommendation and music search applications. Since the music genre categorization criteria continually shift, data-driven methods such as neural networks have been proven especially useful to music information retrieval. An enhanced CNN architecture, the Bottom-up Broadcast Neural Network, uses mel-spectrograms to push music data through a network where important low-level information is preserved. An enhanced RNN architecture, the Independent Recurrent Neural Network for Music Genre Classification, takes advantage of the sequential aspects of music while combating typical RNN shortcomings. Both enhanced neural networks performed the best in their studies, but the IndRNN has a higher average classification accuracy

Returns to Education for Indigenous Populations in the US: How Women Compared to Men?

    Get PDF
Previous research finds large gaps in the labor market outcomes for the Indigenous population. Despite recent improvements, Indigenous workers lag other racial groups in terms of educational attainment and earnings. This study uses the 5-year American Community Survey Data (2018-2022) to estimate earning gains (returns to education) associated with college education for Indigenous workers and examine how Indigenous workers fare compared to workers from other racial groups. The research finds that the marginal benefit to a college education is lower for AIAN workers when compared to their white peers. In fact, the marginal benefit from a college education compared to their white peers is lowest for Indigenous workers than any other racial group. The research further finds that the marginal benefit to a college education is significantly larger for Indigenous women than Indigenous men. Despite larger marginal benefits, Indigenous women (and also men) earn significantly lower average earnings in the labor market. There are a multitude of potential reasons but most notably, systemic inequality, biases, lack of opportunities and resources, and racial discrimination are factors that need to be addressed

History, Impacts, and Control of Purple Loosestrife (\u3ci\u3eLythrum salicaria\u3c/i\u3e) in Minnesota

    Get PDF
Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) is an infamous invasive plant species in wetland habitats. It was introduced to North America through multiple pathways. While herbicides and other attempts to eradicate purple loosestrife have proved mostly ineffective for various reasons, the introduction of the plant’s natural herbivores has shown promise. This paper provides an overview of research done on purple loosestrife’s introduction, biology, impacts, and control methods with an emphasis on its history in Minnesota. Understanding the history and past efforts made to control this plant can be an important reference point for future work
