The Relationship Between Fatalities in Police Violence and Their Identifying Characteristics: Age, Gender, Race, and Region

    Get PDF
Police violence, highlighted by the George Floyd incident in 2020, has intensified concerns about police brutality and perceived racism in U.S. law enforcement (AP News, 2022). Therefore, we intend to analyze Fatal Encounters data, which documents non-police deaths that occur in the presence of the police in the United States. By creating statistical tables and graphs, as well as applying time-series methods, classification and regression trees, and a multinomial logistic regression model, we find that males and transgender people are more likely than females to encounter victimization during police brutality enforcement for any cause of death. Victims older than 19 are more likely to die in police brutality enforcement than victims younger than 19.https://digitalcommons.morris.umn.edu/urs_2024/1002/thumbnail.jp

Long- and Short-Term Weather Variables Affect Capture Rates in Western Painted Turtles (\u3ci\u3eChrysemys Picta Bellii\u3c/i\u3e) in Marshall Co., South Dakota

Turtle populations are declining globally, and yet accurate long-term population surveys are often lacking. Even amongst widespread species, information on long-term population trends is largely missing. As such, studies on demographics, population structure, and factors that affect capture efficacy are needed. In 2019 we began a long-term study on Western Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta bellii) in the Couteau des Prairie habitat in northeastern South Dakota. We captured turtles using several trapping techniques and investigated the effects of short- and long-term weather variables on catch per unit effort. Temperature was positively associated with daily capture rates, showing the strongest relationship with the temperature on the day of capture, and less so with the temperature on the day preceding capture. All other short-term weather conditions did not exhibit a statistically significant association with trapping efficacy. These data suggest that increased temperature may increase turtle movement, thus increasing chances of capture. Total monthly precipitation was strongly and negatively correlated with total catch per unit effort, showing the highest correlation with precipitation in the previous six months. We hypothesize that dry conditions favor turtle captures due to contraction of aquatic habitat, serving to concentrate turtles in the study area

What Influences Reproductive Rights Policy? State Abortion Restrictions and the Level of State Democracy

    Get PDF
The overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022 greatly altered the way reproductive rights policy is regulated in the United States. Sole policy-making jurisdiction was given to individual states, and many states have already passed legislation that both expands and restricts abortion access. This research examines what factors have the most influence on state-level abortion policy-making, specifically testing to determine how significant the level of democracy is in deciding how restrictive reproductive rights policies are implemented. Multiple regression models were run using various other variables to examine their impact on state reproduction restriction ranking using multiple subsets of data. Through a combination of a substantial literature review, quantitative data work, and multiple qualitative case studies, it was found that the State Democracy Index as a measure of the level of democracy was the most statistically significant variable when tested with all other included variables. This means the level of democracy is the biggest indicator in explaining how restrictive a state is on abortion policy. Public opinion and the partisanship of state legislatures both have some influence in explaining restrictiveness, but the level of democracy is the most statistically significant, indicating that restrictive policy states are often out of touch with their public opinion. The level of adults with college education was also significant in helping to explain how supportive or restrictive a state is

Influence of MLB Pitching Trends on Youth Players and the Epidemic of Pitching Injuries

    Get PDF
This paper will aim to explore the effect of the current MLB pitching trends and the correlation between trends and injury. Furthermore, the goal is to examine the trickle down effect of these trends and the rise in youth arm injuries. I will investigate the MLB’s emphasis on pitching “stuff” (velocity, spin rate and workhorse pitchers), which is favored over statistics, trying to prove that the MLB neglects long-term pitching health in return for harder throwing pitchers. These patterns, adopted by youth players have created a rise in throwing injuries due to the desire of young players to make it to the league
