    Water Quality of the Inner Puno Bay of Lake Titicaca

    Lake Titicaca straddles the border between Bolivia and Peru and is the highest lake in the world. The Lake has held great significance, particularly to the Incan empire for the last five thousand years as a source of drinking water, for agricultural use, and is the primary source for protein from native and more recently from non-native species of fish. It currently supports a growing fish farming industry for both Bolivia and Peru. Puno is one of the major urban centers on Lake Titicaca and supports a population of about 1.3 million people which derive their drinking water and a primary source of protein from the Inner Bay. The Inner Puno Bay of Lake Titicaca, has historically had water quality issues due to the discharge of effluent into this restricted bay. The goal of this research project is to review previous studies on water quality of the inner Puno Bay and the greater Puno Bay and to establish a seasonal monitoring program (February, May, August and December) that collects water quality data including pH, conductivity/resistivity, total dissolved solids, phosphate, nitrite, nitrate, metals, and qualitative and quantitative data on E. coli and enterococcus bacteria. The existing water quality data indicate that the water of the inner bay is alkaline and contains phosphate which is indicative of the presence of dissolved solids in the water, probably derived from the effluent. These data also suggest an increasing occurrence of E. coli and enterococcus bacteria which severely affects the water quality in the Inner Puno Bay and reduces water quality in adjacent areas of the lake where drinking water is derived, and fish farms are present. This not only presents health risks to the inhabitants of the Puno region but may present health risks to the large number of tourists that visit the region each year. The review of the historical data on water quality supplemented by our seasonal monitoring supports the timely development of a remediation plan to mitigate the poor water quality, ensuring quality drinking water, maintaining a healthy pisciculture, and reducing health risks to residents and tourists.https://digitalcommons.morris.umn.edu/urs_2025/1009/thumbnail.jp

    From Relic to Wreath: Investigating Victorian Hair Art

    Museum patrons often felt disgust and awe after I would tell them what the intricate wreaths in front of them were made of when I gave tours at the Crow Wing County Historical Society. Hair art was popular in the United States and Britain in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with its peak occurring between the 1860s and 1900.1 Despite its popularity, it is not often discussed at length in fields that study Victorian artwork or bodily artwork. Many Victorian scholars were entirely put off by the medium because of the morbidity, and the practice is often dismissed as a type of folk art, like knitting and crochet. Despite this dismissal, hair art exists as an important stepping stone between medieval reliquaries and contemporary body art of today. Hair art is important both as a Victorian mourning practice and as a type of bodily art that continues into the present. We can see this from magazines at the time that encouraged ordinary women to take up the craft, and from the large amounts of hair wreaths that exist in museums and historic houses across the United States and Britain

    Relightable Neural Radiance Fields for Novel View Synthesis

    This paper describes relighting neural radiance fields for novel view synthesis. View synthesis is the problem of using input images with corresponding camera angles to produce a photorealistic 3D model of an environment and its objects. Neural radiance fields (NeRFs) were created as a solution to view synthesis. Neural radiance field models work well for generating realistic 3D models from 2D image inputs; how-ever, they do not support changing the lighting or placing the objects from the input images into different environments. The problem comes from the fact that NeRFs rely on a neural network that is essentially overfitted to the original environment used in the training. This means an object in a given scene cannot be placed into a different scene using the NeRF neural network model. A new model, relightable neural radiance fields (ReNeRFs), has been proposed to combat this issue. ReNeRFs have the ability to control the lighting of an object and place it into novel environments using an image-based relighting approach

    Quo Vadis, Media Literacy? Notes from Latvia, Bulgaria, and the USA

    Investigating and comparing the contents of recent media texts and policy documents about Media Literacy (ML) initiatives in Latvia, Bulgaria and the USA, our analysis responds to the questions: (1) what is the current state of discourse about ML in respective countries?; and (2) in what ways are ML related to national security, defense against propaganda and the national or social practices associated with “integration”? Our findings indicate the status of ML education and public practice across respective countries is different, albeit somewhat similarly “political,” in all of the nations. We also suggest that media literacy teaching and practices should more strongly emphasize the necessities of media and information literacies
