The role of Arginyltransferase 1 in body weight homeostasis
No full textPrevious studies reported that systemic deletion of Arginyltransferase 1 (ATE1) in mice results in dramatic fat loss and resistance to diet-induced obesity. However, the mechanisms through which ATE1 influence energy metabolism remain unclear. Here, we investigated the hypothalamic role of ATE1 by examining the effects of the anorectic hormone leptin in wild type (WT) and ATE1-knockout (ATE1-KO) mice maintained on a normal chow diet, or a high fat diet. We found that on both diets, ATE1-KO mice weighed significantly less than WT mice despite consuming more food (hyperphagia). We also found that, similar to WT mice on normal chow, ATE1-KO mice remain responsive to leptin on NC. However, ATE1-KO mice had significantly lower circulating plasma leptin than wild type mice on both diets. This explains (at least in part) their hyperphagia. Interestingly, we also found that leptin reduces the expression of ATE1 in the hypothalamus, indicating that decreased ATE1 activity may be a component of the Leptin regulatory network driving a lean phenotype. In contrast to normal chow, we found that ATE1-KO mice became leptin resistant on high fat diet. Remarkably, we found that the loss of Ate1 gene function reverses high fat diet-induced obesity. Collectively, these results strongly suggest that the inhibition of ATE1 may offer an effective therapeutic strategy to combat obesity
Promoting Access to Services and Best Practices: Driver Rehabilitation Educational Resource Development
No full textDriving is one of the most important instrumental activities of daily living that allows people to move freely within the community (Davis et al., 2016). Inability to drive paired with limited access to alternate transportation is correlated with a decrease in quality of life, financial stability, health, and wellness. The purpose of this capstone project was to promote access to services and best practices in driver rehabilitation by developing educational resources specifically for driving educators and the public to increase awareness about driver rehabilitation and improve the screening practices of driving educators for people with disability or at risk of disability and promote referral of these clients to driver rehabilitation services when needed. I conducted a literature review and needs assessment to inform a plan of action for the development and implementation of the educational resources which included a 4-hour continuing education course for driving educators and three informational videos for the public. The results currently indicate that the continuing education course and YouTube videos are having a positive impact on driving educators and the public, with an increase in knowledge about driver rehabilitation services and confidence for screening students and making referrals to driver rehabilitation services when indicated.ADED The Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialist
Experiential Learning through OER: Insights from a Student-Written Essay Collection on Identity
No full textIn Fall ’23, I designed my Advanced Exposition class as an experiential learning course where students worked together to produce an edited collection of essays that would be published as an OER book through our university library’s Pressbooks platform. Students collaboratively conceptualized the collection theme and crafted a Call for Papers that they each responded to with an abstract proposal. From there, they wrote their accepted chapters, and the class was scaffolded with workshops, peer reviews, and revision sessions that emphasized the real-world iterative and processual nature of the writing process. Through student reflection and frequent check-ins, it became clear to me that the reality of a publicly accessible published product at the end of this process provided unanticipated productive and unproductive pressures that opened up time and space for students to think about their writing processes in ways that wouldn’t have been possible without the publication aspect—which wouldn’t have been possible without the OER options our library offers. This presentation will delve into the context of the course, the organization and scaffolding strategies employed for the OER published product, student takeaways from working with OER, and both successes and struggles with the project as a whole. Attendees will gain practical insights into implementing similar experiential learning through OER projects in their own courses

No full textThe purpose of this study is to raise awareness of the Fiori Musicali by Renaissance composer Girolamo Frescobaldi by providing historical context for the work, investigating common performance practices of the era, and examining the composition’s influence on future generations of organists. This research-based initiative provides historical context for the changing landscape of Italian governance, the training and employment of organists during Frescobaldi’s lifetime, and the impact of the Reformation on the Catholic church. Additionally, guidelines for historically-informed performance practices associated with the Fiori Musicali and an overview of the pedagogical content of the genres presented in the work are included. Connections are made between Frescobaldi and the North German organ school, culminating in the music of J. S. Bach
Green chemical recycling of poly (bisphenol a carbonate) using microwave synthesis
No full textWith an increase in use of electronics and a decrease in their life span there has been an exponential increase in electronic waste. One of the largest materials used in electronics is a plastic called poly (bisphenol A carbonate) a complex plastic with high thermal stability and strength. Due to its complex structure this poly (bisphenol A carbonate) is difficult to recycle and often just ends up in landfills. In order to mitigate that we created a baseline microwave-assisted methanolysis of the polymer into its monomers bisphenol A and dimethyl carbonate. With methanol alone in the microwave we obtained yields of 98% for a time of 25 minutes at 155 °C. Additionally we found that the transesterification of poly (bisphenol A carbonate) does not undergo acid catalyzed transesterification with methanol as its primary reactant

Data sharing considerations and practice among health researchers in Africa: A scoping review
No full textObjective: To examine the way African health researchers share data. It summarized the types of data collected, the data sharing platforms, and how the geographical distribution of the African-based health researchers influenced data sharing practices. Ethical, legal, and social aspects were considered. Institutional and government matters such as research support and funding were identified.
Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, LILAC, African Journal Archive, and Scopus databases were searched. Full-text screening was conducted, and data was extracted using the data extraction tool published in an a priori Joanna Briggs Institute-published protocol. Discrepancies were resolved by consensus. Data were illustrated using a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses flow diagram, figures, tables, and a narrative text.
Results: Of the 3869 studies that were identified, 32 studies were included in the final study. There was a spike in the number of published studies from 2015 to 2019 (n = 24, 75.0%), while a decline followed in the number of publications from 2020 to April 2023 (n = 6, 18.8%). Ten of the studies included were from South Africa, five were from Kenya, three each were from Nigeria and Tanzania, two were from Ghana and Sierra Leone respectively, while one each was from Malawi, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Mali, Gambia, Senegal, and Burkina Faso. Negative factors impacting data sharing practices of health researchers in Africa included barriers to individual research capacity, governmental bureaucracy and corruption, legal obstacles, technological problems, prohibitive costs of publication, lack of funding, institutional delays, and ethical issues.
Conclusion: This review identified how African health researchers undertook data sharing in their countries. It pinpointed how geographical location and the resultant challenges to data distribution both individually and institutionally influenced health researchers’ ability to achieve data sharing and publication of their research. It was clear that many parts of Africa are still not participating in research due to the many factors that negatively impact health data sharing in Africa
A cross-case narrative inquiry of board-certified music therapists' perceptions of therapeutic relationships with stroke patients and their caregivers
No full textThe purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between music therapists, stroke patients, and their caregivers. The researcher’s goal was to understand how board-certified music therapists describe these relationship dynamics and the different roles that they perceive caregivers play in the stroke patient’s recovery. The researcher conducted semi-structured interviews with two music therapists who had experience working in stroke rehabilitation. While results are limited due to the small sample size, they indicated that the relationships between music therapists, stroke patients, and their caregivers can be collaborative. Also, caregivers may be central to the stroke patient's recovery by providing both instrumental and emotional support. Lastly, the relationships between music therapists, stroke patients, and caregivers may be interconnected
The impact of racial socialization and family stress in African American homes
No full textThe present study examined the relations between African American parents and how socialization leads to different levels of stress, communication, and spiritual transcendence. A cross-sectional, correlational design which included 133 Texas African American parents using survey data, was used to examine how family stress impacts parenting among African Americans. Findings from this study suggested that parent’s behaviors of racial socialization (perception of bias, cultural socialization, and racial mistrust) did not significantly predict parental stress in African American parents. However, while controlling for the age of the youngest child results were significantly different in regards to preparation for bias. Mothers and fathers did not differ significantly in regards to preparation for bias or racial mistrust. Literature on African American family stress is growing, yet, there is a lack of quantitative data that focuses on how racial socialization can predict parental stress, communication, and spiritual transcendence in African American homes. Additionally, a qualitative exploration of the views of African American parents and how their racial encounters impact their entire family would be helpful
