Addressing the Occupational Needs of Immigrant Children: A Pediatric Program
No full textImmigrant children are a deeply underserved population in the U.S., even though they comprise over a quarter of the pediatric population. Not only that, they face life-altering changes and challenges in their life, which negatively affects their participation in occupation. Despite their complex occupational therapy needs, there is a dearth of literature regarding the role of OT with immigrant children in the U.S. To address this problem, this capstone project aims to address this gap by providing resources, strategies, & education for the immigrant pediatric population through program development. The capstone student partnered with the Agape Clinic, a non-profit healthcare center, to develop occupation-based programming for their patients. The end product was a comprehensive, educational manual intended to educate caregivers and staff members of the occupational and mental health needs of immigrant children. Overall, the outcomes of the manual were found to have a positive impact on the clinic and future pediatric patients. More programs like these are needed to meet the occupational needs of immigrant children. OER Collaboration: Texas Digital Resources OER User Group
No full textCommunity is vital for librarians and advocates of OER and open educational practices. At many institutions, advocating for usage and creation of OER is a solo endeavor, which can lead to loneliness and in the worst cases, burnout. In 2023, the Texas Digital Library (TDL) established the OER Users Group. This group not only provides resources and support for the whole of Texas, but its members also provide additional support for one another. During this presentation, I will discuss how the OER Users Group came to be, the group's charge, and my overall experiences facilitating the group as chair. I will also briefly discuss how groups like this can provide the sense of community and support that is needed for those working in the world of open education

Sense and Abilities - Trilingual Sensory Processing Curriculum for Adaptive Rock-Climbing Volunteers
No full textSensory Integration (SI) and Sensory Processing (SP) recognize that various sources of information from the outside world and from within the body must be used to provide the opportunity for a coherent and adaptive behavioral response (Sensory processing: Sensory integration, 2023) Since children depend on their environment to help them interpret their senses as they develop, SI/SP is a critical area for children to focus on. This paper aims to present evidence of the effects of implementing a sensory processing education program with adaptive rock-climbing volunteers at United Rocks. The capstone project involved creating a sensory processing guide for volunteers at Movement Plano, including laminated copies with carabiner clips, purchasing materials for the guide, and translating it into different languages, to promote sensory inclusivity through education and learn valuable lessons about program development and leadership in unconventional settings like rock-climbing gyms. The paper discusses the importance of sensory processing and integration in children's development, focusing on a program implemented with adaptive rock-climbing volunteers at United Rocks. The program included a sensory processing curriculum, a strategies guide, and weekly emails to educate volunteers on sensory patterns and strategies. The post-test results showed increased knowledge and confidence among participants, suggesting the program's effectiveness. Future recommendations include creating additional resources for United Rock's website and extending the program to climbers.United Rock
Lack of Cytopathic Effects in Breast Cancer Cells Infected With Human Cytomegalovirus
No full textHuman Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a member of the herpesvirus family that evades the host immune system and establishes life-long latency. While HCMV typically causes clinical disease only in immunocompromised people, it may contribute to chronic conditions, reduce immune function, and promote tumor progression. HCMV has been associated with invasive tumors and metastatic spreading in breast cancer. To investigate the impact of HCMV on breast cancer, we infected breast cancer cells and evaluated cell morphology using the Incucyte Live Cell Imaging System. While normal epithelial cells showed clear cytopathic effects following HCMV infection, breast cancer cells did not exhibit morphology changes or undergo cell lysis. These results suggest that HCMV infection may proceed differently in tumor cells compared to normal cells, possibly due to genetic mutations or abnormal tumor cell physiology. These findings demonstrate that HCMV infection of breast cancer cells has complex effects that may contribute to tumor progression. The different sizes and styles of clothes and embroidery patterns are all meant to signify how although all the patients suffer from Parkinson’s Disease, they are all very different. They all have their own style, they’re own hobbies, they’re own life. Parkinson’s Disease cannot take that from them.

Once a group is formed there is an understood outgroup, who is viewed as less than in comparison to ingroup members. Humans can take on many different identities, and some of the groups we place ourselves in are prioritized more than others. There is also evidence that conflict or stress can lead to further distinction between groups. Today, politics can be stressful, and many people hold their political affiliation in high regards to personal identity.
