Determining the Role of ADAMTS Proteases in TGF-β Signaling in C. elegans

    No full text
The TGF-β signaling pathway is crucial for animal development, tissue homeostasis, and disease progression, but its regulation in a time- and tissue-specific manner is not fully understood. In mammalian systems, studying TGF-β signaling is challenging due to its complexity and redundancy. The roundworm C. elegans offers a more accessible model, as it conserves key genes involved in TGF-β signaling, including ADAMTS proteases and extracellular matrix (ECM) components. DBL-1, a C. elegans TGF-β superfamily member, regulates body size and tissue morphogenesis, with its signaling modulated by ECM component LON-2. Our study aims to explore whether ADAMTS proteases cleave LON-2 to facilitate proper DBL-1 signaling during development. We will investigate LON-2 cleavage in ADAMTS mutant backgrounds using western blotting and confocal microscopy to analyze LON-2 localization and levels. Understanding the interactions between ADAMTS, LON-2, and DBL-1 could provide new insights into TGF-β pathway modulations.T

Rising Prices and COVID-19: The Impact of the Pandemic on the US Economy

    No full text
This project investigates the cause of the inflationary period in the US following the COVID-19 pandemic. This inflation was the result of supply chain disruptions and changes in the labor market due to the coronavirus. We will take a closer look at the monetary and fiscal policy in 2020 and its initial impact on the US economy. Significant changes in the labor market occurred during the Great Resignation period. Additionally, disruptions to the global supply chain created shortages in a time of increasing consumer demand. Many large US corporations engaged in price hiking, a practice known to contribute to higher inflation levels. All of these factors combined to create an aggregate increase in prices across the country. This research explores the different economic factors and changes in consumer behavior that contributed to the current inflation

Empowering Adolescent Mothers: A Comprehensive Guide of Community Resources in the Bryan College Station Area

    No full text
For my Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstone Project, I created a comprehensive Community Resource Guide (CRG) to support adolescent mothers in the Bryan-College Station area. While working with Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach, I identified barriers to maternal well-being through surveys and interviews with young moms. I then compiled over 100 local and online resources across eight categories and created a series of educational videos to improve access and understanding. Guided by the Model of Human Occupation, this project allowed me to apply a client-centered, holistic approach and demonstrated how occupational therapy can empower young mothers to improve their health, confidence, and daily functioning.Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach Inc

Association between a power mobility driving assessment and cognitive screening tool for older adults living in residential care settings

    No full text
This study aimed to expand the psychometric data of the Power-mobility Indoor Driving Assessment © (PIDA) and describe how cognition and previous power mobility device experience could influence PIDA scores. Data was collected from 33 participants across seven residential care facilities. The data included a power mobility device and demographic questionnaire, two administrations of the PIDA, and a Saint Louis University Mental Status Examination score. Reliability, correlation, and descriptive data were analyzed and interpreted using SPSS. The PIDA demonstrated significant test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.93) among older adult users of power mobility devices in residential care settings, regardless of sex or cognitive status, when evaluated by a single rater. A weak positive correlation was observed between the PIDA and the Saint Louis University Mental Status Examination, indicating that a higher score on the Saint Louis University Mental Status Examination yielded a slightly higher score on the PIDA. Further, among individuals with cognitive impairment, it was found that those with more previous power mobility device experience had higher PIDA scores, which may be a contributing factor to driving safely if an individual has a cognitive impairment. Overall, the results support the continued use of the PIDA for assessing driving safety in power mobility device users. The results highlight the necessity for tailored interventions and support for individuals with cognitive impairment to ensure the safe use of their power mobility devices in residential care facilities. Clinicians should consider cognitive impairment and previous power mobility device experience when evaluating current or potential power mobility device users

Healthy Finances, Calm Mind: Enhancing Financial Literacy and Stress Management Skills in Latinx Families

    No full text
The purpose of this capstone project is to provide a culturally sensitive life skills education class in Spanish, focused on money management and stress management for parents of adolescents transitioning from middle school to high school. The goal is to promote a smooth transition during this developmental stage. Through this program, Latino families are empowered and educated on foundational concepts related to financial literacy, enabling them to build their own understanding and pass these skills on to their children. Parents also explore the connection between stress and financial issues and the impact it can have on the body, while learning healthy strategies to manage stress effectively. Through this education of life skills, families can improve their participation in daily activities within the home and community, leading to improved occupational balance and an enhanced quality of life. The Concili

Effect of Functional Electrical Stimulation In Handwriting Remediation After Acquired Brain Injury: A Randomized Trial

    No full text
This doctoral research capstone project evaluates the outcomes of an 8-week occupation-based handwriting remediation program integrating Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) for adults with Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI). The intervention focuses on enhancing bilateral upper extremity motor performance and improving functional handwriting skills, which are essential for daily participation. A convenience sample of 14 adults with a history of ABI completed a structured program delivered at the Dallas Stroke Center. The intervention integrated FES with task-specific handwriting practice utilizing the Person-Environment-Occupation (PEO) model. Functional outcomes include the modified Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), the Print Tool for handwriting legibility, and 3D Motion Capture (MoCap) analysis technology, which the researcher used to analyze upper limb movement patterns. Participants demonstrated clinically significant improvements in handwriting legibility, upper limb functional motor patterns, and self-perceived performance and satisfaction in self-identified occupational tasks. Mocap analysis data supported objective gains in joint movement efficiency and task execution. Integrating FES with handwriting-specific occupational therapy (OT) rehabilitation supports neuromodulatory interventions to promote functional motor control in populations with ABI. These findings highlight the potential for combining MoCap and a client-centered treatment framework to enhance upper limb remediation outcomes in adults with neurological impairments.Mike A. An Exploration of Burnout, Moral Distress, and Moral Injury: A Nationwide Survey of their Influence on Well-being in Physical Therapists

    No full text
Background: More than 50% of physical therapists (PTs) experience burnout, which is linked to job turnover, poor quality of patient care, and poor well-being. Despite interventions, burnout prevalence remains high, suggesting that moral injury may be a contributing factor. This study aimed to explore the relationships among burnout, moral injury, intention to leave the job, quality of care, and well-being. Methods: Surveys were emailed to licensed PTs recruited through 18 state licensing board email lists. Results: A total of 703 valid surveys from 37 states and Washington, DC, were analyzed. Moderate to strong associations were identified between both burnout and moral injury with poor quality of care and well-being. Conclusion: Addressing both burnout and moral injury is crucial for improving PT job satisfaction, patient care quality, and overall well-being. Comprehensive strategies targeting these issues are essential for sustaining the PT workforce and enhancing healthcare outcomes
