Exploration of the Promotion of Cervical Cancer Prevention and Screening by Nurse Midwives in Nigeria

    No full text
The purpose of the study was to examine the role of nurse midwives in cancer prevention and screening at reproductive health clinics in Nigeria. Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women aged 20 to 49 in Nigeria. As the primary health providers for women in Nigeria, it is crucial to understand the impact of midwives. Insight into midwives' practices and interactions can reveal challenges and strengths in providing these services to reduce the incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer by improving access and awareness. A qualitative design, Sequential Consensual Qualitative Design (SCQD), a community participatory action research framework, was employed. Data collection involved demographic questionnaires, individual interviews, observations, focus groups, documents, and articles, and analyzed using NVivo 12 software. A total of 25 individuals, comprising 18 nurse midwives, six nursing and midwifery educators, and one physician, were interviewed, all from Federal University Teaching Hospital in southeastern Nigeria. Participants were between 38 and 60 years old and had held their current roles for more than two years. Key findings from the study included that nurse midwives played a vital role in cervical cancer prevention screening and educational initiatives. They engaged in patient education and screening, both in-hospital and during outreach, with support from stakeholders, including traditional rulers, faith-based organizations, and NGOs. While those interviewed had a basic understanding of cervical cancer prevention and screening, significant knowledge gaps existed. Specially trained midwives in the Well Women's Center demonstrated higher screening competence. Furthermore, offering free screening and logistical support during outreach was crucial for such programs to thrive. Nonetheless, several barriers and challenges, including limited resources such as workforce, clinical equipment, and supplies, as well as knowledge gaps, hindered midwives, adversely impacting their professional practice. In summary, nurse midwives play a significant role in screening and raising awareness about cervical cancer in-hospital and outreach initiatives. However, their screening capacity is constrained by limited clinical supplies and inadequate ongoing education. Successful cervical cancer prevention initiatives rely on providing and sustaining continuing education, clinical supplies, subsidized care, support, and fostering collaboration with local leaders and the male partners of patients

“All of Our Kids Are All of Our Kids”: Using Equity-Focused Teaching Strategies Within the MTSS Process to Increase Student Achievement and Address Significant Disproportionality in Special Education

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of the implementation of equity-focused teaching strategies on student achievement and teacher perceptions. This study utilized a convergent mixed methods approach to answer three research questions: (RQ1) What changes were observed in teachers and students as a result of the implementation of equity-focused teaching strategies?, (RQ2) How does exposure to professional development on equity-focused teaching change teacher beliefs about culture, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status?, and (RQ3) What are teachers’ perceptions of the implementation of equity-focused teaching? The results of this study found that while there was a significant difference between teacher beliefs toward culture, race, language and learning after exposure to equity-focused teaching PD materials, there was not a significant moderating effect of time spent in the PD course on the changes in teacher beliefs. Qualitative analysis found that participants experienced increased student engagement and improved instructional flexibility after implementing equity-focused teaching in their classrooms. Although the educational system has experienced a long history of inequity for CLD learners, and continues to face an onslaught of legislation aimed at restricting the implementation of DEI initiatives and diverse curriculum materials, the findings of this study indicate that exposure to professional development resources, even for short periods of time, can lead to positive teacher and student outcomes

Mental health conditions of adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and comorbidities

Although the association is not well understood, people with COPD are likely to suffer from mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Due to this occurrence, the aim of the present study is to better understand the mental health experience and COPD comorbidities of U.S. adults with a COPD diagnosis. The final sample comprised 1,676 U.S. adults who were surveyed in the 2019 National Health Interview Survey adult public file. Logistic and ordinal regression were used to calculate adjusted odds ratios for comorbid conditions predicting depression, anxiety, and the number of mental health issues, respectively. Depressive symptoms were more common in adults with COPD who also suffered from diabetes, heart disease, stroke, or asthma. Anxiety symptoms were more common in adults with COPD who also suffered from diabetes, heart disease, stroke, asthma or hypertension. For people with COPD, there was a significant difference seen between the prevalence of diabetes, heart attack, stroke, and asthma and the total number of mental health issues. These findings have implications for how mental health and primary care professionals treat COPD and COPD-related comorbidities. Additionally, they have implications for providing individualized treatments for persons living with COPD and related comorbidities

Object perception for students with visual impairments: A virtual reality approach

    No full text
Problem/Purpose of the Study: This study explored the feasibility of integrating Virtual Reality (VR) to enhance educational experiences for students with visual impairments (VI). It examined how VR could improve object perception and detail identification, increasing accessibility and addressing limitations of traditional visual-centric teaching methods. Procedure: A quantitative approach with anecdotal notation assessed VR’s impact on object perception. Participants engaged in structured real-world (natural) viewing tasks at six, eight, and ten feet, then completed identical tasks in VR. Participants completed a pre-session interview on visual acuity, followed by an object identification task in both environments. A post-session interview gathered feedback on their experiences and perceptions. Anecdotal notation was recorded via a pre-interview for visual acuity, performance, and accommodations. The post-interview collected reactive data concerning VR experience. A simple T-test was used to analyze the data from the natural and virtual sessions with a direct comparison between the two environments. Summary of Conclusions: The findings of this study underscored the practical implications of using VR to enhance spatial awareness, sensory stimulation, and independent exploration for students with visual impairments. However, the study also highlighted challenges such as accessibility, cost, and potential side effects like motion sickness. These findings provide valuable insights into the ongoing refinement and development of VR applications for education with this student population, guiding future research and practice in the field of special education
