    First record of freshwater shrimp, Macrobrachium lamarrei lamarrei (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) from Gujarat, India

Milne Edwards, 1837) was recorded for the first time from a freshwater pond of Dabhoi, Vadodara district of Gujarat State, India in March 2015.     Evaluation of some edible leaves as potential feed ingredients in aquatic animal nutrition and health

    In this study, the potential benefits of ten edible leaves (Manihot esculents, cassava leaf; Colocasia esculenta, cocoyam leaf; Talinum triagulare, water leaf; Telfairia occidentalis, fluted pumpkin leaf; Carica papaya, pawpaw leaf; Amaranthus chlorostachys, green leaf; Moringa oleifare, drumstick leaf; Vernonia amygdalina, bitter leaf; Ipomoea batatas, sweet potato leaf and Basella alba, Malabar spinach ‘Amunututu’ to aquatic animal nutrition and health were studied along with proximate, mineral and phytochemical compositions. Results show that theses edible leaves were a good source of protein and the highest crude protein was obtained in C. papaya (32.6%) while the lowest in C. esculenta (14.7%). The highest and lowest total ash was found in T. triagulare (34.6%) and C. papaya (11%) respectively. The result showed that the edible leaves are rich in wide variety of secondary metabolites of phytochemical constituents such as tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, glycosides oxalates and phytate which can act against different diseases. Results suggest that inclusion of edible leaves may be nutritionally beneficial and this could promote growth, immune system and enhance disease resistance properties and subsequently very potential to reduce the cost of highly priced supplementary feeds

    Impact of community-based natural resource management on household consumption: a case study of Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia

    Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) is implemented in Tonle Sap Lake (TSL), Cambodia after abolishment of commercial fishing lots in 2001 and 2012. One objective of CBNRM implementation is to reduce poverty of the local communities in TSL. This study aimed to examine the impact of CBNRM on household consumption of fishermen in TSL through Propensity Score Matching method by comparing 248 non-CBNRM households and 223 CBNRM households This study reveals that CBNRM had a negative impact on adult equivalent consumption in the community including the fishermen who fished only inside the community boundary and those who fished both inside and outside the community boundary. However, this study also shows a positive impact of CBNRM on adult equivalent consumption of the households who fished only inside the community boundary. The local community needs more rights to exclude the migrant fishermen and rights to enforce the laws. This study also highlights that alternate income sources should also be created that could be created by expanding the market of the existing ecotourism-job, i.e. hyacinth-made handicraft making

    Fish catch composition of selected small scale fishing gears used in the Bonny River, Rivers State, Nigeria

    Fish catch composition of some selected small scale fishing gears (gill net, cast net, beach seine and long line) were investigated in Bonny River, Rivers State, Nigeria from August 2014 to January 2015. A total number of 25 fish species from 18 families were recorded during the study. The Mugilidae with only one species constituted the dominant family while Cichlidae, Lutjanidae, Clupeidae, had three species and Scianidae had two species of fish caught and the remaining families had one species each. Mugil cephalus constituted 28.48% of the total catches followed by C. nigrodigitatus (22.48%). In the dry season M. cephalus forms the major component landings (32.65%), followed by C. nigrodigitatus (26.53%) and S. galilaeus (12.24%) while in the wet season M. cephalus (31.06%), C. nigrodigitatus (18.63%) and T. zillii (11.80%) were the dominant fish species. Cast net was the most efficient fishing gear while gill net was the least efficient. The comparison analysis between the wet and dry seasons using t-test showed no significant difference between dry and wet seasons (t = 0.092, P > 0.05)

    Coastal areas of Bhavnagar district harbors wide range of ichthyofaunal diversity and diverse fisheries resources. The fishermen in this area use wide range of fishing methods and gears, which evolved traditionally and being adept extensively in Bhavnagar coastline. Livelihood of these fishermen is almost entirely depends on mudskipper fishing and they employ three types of fishing methods to catch them i.e. direct catch through digging the burrow, stick traps around mudskipper holes, and by nylon net. Fishing by using nylon net is the most commonly used method compared to others

    Impact of hydropower project (RoR) on the ichthyofaunal diversity of river Birahiganga in Central Himalaya (India)

    We examined the present status of ichthyofaunal diversity of river Birahiganga in compliance to the construction of one hydropower project (HPP). The river is diverted through tunnel, leaving very less water in its fragmented course (~2.5 km). Sometime river gets almost dried in summer season. Altogether 20 fish species belonging to two orders, three families and eight genera were reported from fragmented and continuous flowing stretches of the river. Snow trout (Schizothorax and Schizothoraichthys spp.) have shown major share in total fish catch composition whereas the typical hill stream fishes (Garra and Pseudecheneis spp.) were the least contributor. Installation of HPP has effect on the fish population structure. Maximum species richness (20 species) was recorded from mainstream whereas 16 species were procured from the fragmented stretch. Relative abundance of most of the species was considerably high in the mainstream than the fragmented stretch, except Glyptothorax pectinopterus which has shown equal abundance at both the sites. Low water discharge in the fragmented stretch supports only small sized fishes. The degradation of habitat ecology and variation in physico-chemical features seems distressing the fish population structure

    The present study was based on sighting of whale shark, Rhincodon typus Smith, 1828 on 13th and 14th October 2016 incidentally in oceanic waters of Bay of Bengal at a depth of 3340 and 3270 m. These two sightings were thus confirmed by photographs. Whale sharks were reported in the coastal and near shore regions of India by many of the researchers and this is the first observation of R. typus in oceanic waters of east coast of India

    Fish and fishing gears of the Bangkau Swamp, Indonesia

    This study contributes to the knowledge of traditional fishing gears and the weight-length relationship of fish species from the Bangkau Swamp, Indonesia. Although the use of fishing gears in Bangkau swamp complies with the local regulation but still, some weaknesses have been identified and the options for improvements are being proposed. The length-weight relationship of three dominant fish species, Channa striata, Trichogaster trichopterus, and T. pectoralis were analyzed. The b values ranged from 1.531 to 2.646, with R2 values ranged from 0.814 to 0.917 indicating negative allometric growth pattern; the species becomes leaner as the length increases. The food availability and temperature may have an effect on the growth pattern since the fishes were sampled in dry season. To the best our knowledge, this study is the first reference on WLR for swamp fish in the Bangkau village

    The silver-cheeked toad fish, Lagocephalus scleratus, was recorded for the first time on 25 September 2014. Two specimens of this fish species were collected from the by-catch landed by a commercial deep-sea trawler at Kasimedu Fishing Harbour, Chennai coast, Southeast India. The morphometric and meristic characters of the recorded specimens are described and discussed. The specimen was compared with earlier reports

    Optimization of stocking weight in carp polyculture ponds under drought prone Barind area of Bangladesh

    Increased temperature, decreased water level and reduced culture period of the ponds are considered major problems for aquaculture promotion in drought prone Barind area of Bangladesh. In order to address these problems, an experiment was conducted to optimize the stocking weight for carp polyculture ponds in Tanore Upazila of Rajshahi district. Three different stocking weights were tested under three treatments (T1: 25±0.12 g; T2: 50±0.15 g; T3: 100±0.19 g), each with three replications. Fish growing period (July–December), carp species (Catla catla, Hypopthalmichthys molitrix, Aristichthis nobilis, Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala), stocking density (7,410 individuals/ha), lime and ash treatment, fertilization and feeding were same for all the treatments. Water quality (water temperature, dissolved oxygen, transparency, pH and alkalinity) and fish growth parameters were monitored monthly. Mean values of water quality parameters were found within the suitable range for fish culture. Treatment T3 varied significantly (P<0.05) than that of other treatments for the mean values of final weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, survival rate and yield of fish. Net benefit of carp polyculture was also found the highest in treatment T3. Use of higher stocking weight can be a suitable option for carp polyculture in ponds under drought prone Barind area
