Occurrence of synthetic and natural estrogenic hormones in the aquatic environment
The article is part of a series of publications discussing prevalence of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment. The aim of this study is to describe the problem of the presence of hormonal tablets ingredient 17α-ethinylestradiol and its three natural analogues in wastewater and the environment. Basic information on the substances in question and the concentrations in which these compounds can negatively affect aquatic organisms are provided. In the paper, the authors review the literature data on the presence of estrogenic hormones in wastewater, surface water and groundwater. Penetration through aquifers can lead to accumulation of these compounds in the sediments, which is reflected in the literature
The archetypes of contemporary theaters on examples of athens’ ancient buildings
Theatre architecture remains one of the oldest and most durable types of building. It has accompanied the European civilization from the times of ancient Greece. At that time, there were three principal types of performances. The first was dramatic plays, the second – music recitals and the third – sports events. The performances took place, respectively, in theaters, odeons and stadiums (or hippodromes). The ancient Greek theatre is indisputably a model for contemporary theatre architecture. One of the biggest Greek theatres was the Dionysus Theatre, located on the south slope of Acropolis in Athens, with an auditorium from 5th century B.C. Its neighbour is a substantially younger Herodus Atticus Odeon, an example of Roman theatre based on Greek model. The ancient odeon is also a „prototype” – its examples are the no longer existing buildings of the Pericles Odeon, or the Agrippa Odeon. The models of the contemporary en-ronde theatre can be seen in the form of Greek stadium, the prototype of Roman amphitheatre. Relations of theatre and its ancient archetypes are still very strong, and the deliberations about Greek theatre still relevant today, as they continue to serve as a basis for research of contemporary theatre architecture

Dynamic Modeling and Operation of the Chlor-Alkali Process
Chlorine it is commonly produced through the Chlor-alkali process, which is an electrochemical process – the process energy consumption dominates the production cost. Therefore, optimization of the process has become a major issue to achieve energy conservation and cost effective production. This study aims at investigating the transient and steady-state behavior of the chlorine production system through process modeling and simulation. Material balance and energy balance of the Chlor-alkali membrane process (electrolysis), brine pre-treatment, and chlorine handling are modelled and investigated using rigorous models. MOSAIC and MATLAB, are used to model and to simulate the process response when receiving dynamic input. For validation, the simulation result is compared to experimental data
Modeling Learning motivation of students based on analysis of class evaluation questionnaire
In this paper, we present our research on modeling learning motivation of students by analyzing class evaluation questionnaires, carried out with students as respondents at the end of each term to improve the courses in future semesters. We firstly defined three elements influencing learning motivation: (1) interest, (2) usefulness in the future and (3) satisfaction. Original questionnaire enquiring about those three elements was designed and conducted in multiple classes across different school years. Next, we conducted an experiment to classify students’ motivation for learning using the provided answers. The results of the experiment showed that students’ learning motivation can be estimated using the three elements defined in this study
Selected issues of monument protection and urban design in contemporary conservation practice
The paper refers to the text published in the materials from the 1st Congress of Polish Preservation Officers, the resolution accepted then, and own research and issues concerning monument protection observed, within the last decade. The paper addresses the issue of modernizing historical objects e.g.: thermal modernization; ‘commercial modernization’; issues of protecting modernist monuments from the 1960s and 1970s; the phenomenon of recorded division of immovable monuments; the issue of modernizing historical hospitals, schools, and public utility objects. As far as the protection of urban design monuments is concerned, it involves e.g. preservation of the cultural landscape of our towns; protecting the panorama of historical towns; communications problems and the “city gates” setting
Mathematical modeling of the overhead contact line for the purpose of diagnostics of pantographs
The overhead contact line (OCL) is the most effective way for supplying railway electric vehicles. The increase of the speed of vehicles increases power consumption and requires ensuring proper cooperation of pantographs with OCL. The paper describes the novel mathematical model of the OCL system and the simulation results. The primary objective is a more accurate analysis to increase the reliability of the evaluation of monitoring and diagnostics. The model was based on the Lagrange energy method. The paper presents the structure of the model and equations describing it, as well as the results of some laboratory tests that were performed to determine the model parameters. The selected results of simulations concerning the effects of force impact on the contact wire were carried out using the created model. The prepared program can be used for creating computer tools, which will support designers of OCL
Symptoms of destruction to the original spatial composition of historic parks within three residential park complexes located at Siedlec, Pamiątkowo and Śliwno in greater Poland
This article presents results of studies conducted in three historic parks of Greater Poland. The aim of the research was to analyze changes in the original composition of those objects and to identify the causes of its destruction. The selected parks are of baroque origin but due to changes in garden art trends they were transformed into establishments of landscape character. The analyzed residential – park complexes are characterized by a varying degree of destruction to their original spatial arrangement. The conductedanalyses made it possible to identify what factors were destructive to the composition of the chosen objects and to determine further threats

Between Ownness and Alienness: Towards the Dialectic of Cultural Heritage The article Between Ownness and Alienness: Towards the Dialectic of Cultural Heritage is an attempt to present cultural heritage, or cultural identity, as an effect of two basic factors: that which is one’s own, and that which is alien. “Ownness” and “alienness” are the most general categories of our interpretation of the world, one of the most important categories that enable us to perceive, describe, and organize reality. The dividing line between the two would define the area of cultural heritage.Drawing on the thought of Heraclitus (especially fragments B 8 and B 122) the author first discusses the dialectic of the oppositional categories of “ownness” and “alienness”, proceeding to describe the immanently cultural occasion of an “encounter with the alien”, drawing on the ideas of Kant, Scheler, Heidegger, Gadamer, Lacan and Waldenfels, to round up his argument by linking his reflection to the question of cultural heritage, which – in view of the whole reasoning – appears as a historical record of the encounter with alienness. The author refers to the literary oeuvre of Gombrowicz and the paintings of Nowosielski as examples of creative output linked to the question of ownness and alienness
